Overview

The TORBAL ATN Series is a line of precision scales designed for various weighing applications, including general weighing, animal weighing, parts counting, check weighing, display hold, percent weighing, totalizing, and density measurement. These scales are manufactured by Scientific Industries, Inc., a company established in 1887.

Function Description:

The ATN Series scales are versatile instruments capable of performing a wide range of tasks.

  • General Weighing: Provides accurate weight measurements in various units.
  • Animal Weighing: Designed to weigh live animals and other dynamic loads, offering three operating modes (Automatic, Semi-automatic, Manual) and four weight integration periods (3, 5, 10, and 15 seconds) to ensure accurate results even with movement.
  • Parts Counting: Counts batches of items based on their average piece weight, determined from a sample. The sample size can be configured from 1 to 100 pieces.
  • Check Weighing: Compares an object's weight against a preset target range, indicating whether the weight is under, over, or within the acceptable limits.
  • Display Hold: Locks a stable weight reading on the screen, even after the object is removed from the pan. This feature also has Automatic, Semi-automatic, and Manual modes.
  • Percent Weighing: Compares the relative weight of an unknown item to a previously stored sample, expressing the result as a percentage.
  • Totalizing: Calculates the summation of multiple weights recorded sequentially. It offers Automatic, Semi-automatic, and Manual modes for adding weights.
  • Density Measurement (ATNA Models only): Assists in calculating the density of solids and liquids, requiring a Density Kit (part no. AGC9171). For solids, it uses the formula ρ = m₁ / (m₁ - m₂) * ρ (where m₁ is mass in air, m₂ is mass in liquid, and ρ is liquid density). For liquids, it uses ρ = (m₁ - m₂) / V (where m₁ is plunger mass in air, m₂ is plunger mass in liquid, and V is plunger volume).

The scales feature an Auto-Zero Setting Mechanism (AZSM) that automatically maintains a "center of zero" condition within +/- 6d (e.g., 6 mg on scales with 0.001g readability). Calibration can be performed automatically (internal) or manually (external) depending on the model. GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) print and data configuration allows for detailed transaction receipts including Unit ID, User ID, Project No., Notes/Remarks, and a Signature field.

Usage Features:

The scales are operated via a user-friendly interface with dedicated keys for common functions:

  • Power On/Off: Turns the scale on or off.
  • Tare: Tares the weighing pan.
  • Zero: Zeros the scale.
  • Send: Prints or transfers data to a PC.
  • Menu: Accesses the main menu for configuration.
  • Function: Selects an application mode.
  • Cancel: Clears and cancels operations.

Additional secondary functions for keys include:

  • Enter/YES (Accept): Enters or accepts commands.
  • No (Reject): Rejects commands or changes values.
  • Recall: Recalls the Grand Total in Totalizing mode.
  • Add/Start/Lock: Adds results to the total in Totalizing (Manual), initiates animal weighing in Animal Weighing (Manual), and locks weighing results in Display Hold (Manual).
  • Decimal: Enters a decimal when assigning limit values in check-weighing.
  • Exit: Exits submenus.

The main menu allows configuration of various settings and modes, including Calibration, Units of Measure, Application Modes (Animal Weighing, Parts Counting, Check Weighing, Display Hold, Percent Weighing, Totalizing, Density Measurement), Auto Zero Setting Mechanism (AZSM), GLP Print and Data Configuration, Ports (RS232, USB), Time & Date, Power (Battery and Backlight), and Reset to factory settings.

For connectivity, the scales are equipped with both USB and RS232 interface ports, configurable for baud rate, number of bits, and parity type. Drivers for USB connectivity may need to be installed, either automatically or manually from mytorbal.com/atn.

Maintenance Features:

Proper handling and maintenance are crucial for the scale's longevity and accuracy.

  • Handling: Always handle the scale with care. Damage from improper handling, such as dropping objects on the pan, rough handling, or exceeding weighing capacity, can cause load cell overload and is not covered under warranty. Avoid dropping the scale or applying force to the pan when moving it. Do not handle liquids directly over the scale to prevent spillage and liquid damage.
  • Cleaning: Before cleaning, always unplug the A/C adapter. Use a soft, slightly damp cloth to clean the exterior housing, wiping gently and ensuring no liquid enters the scale. Do not apply excessive pressure to the LCD display. Avoid using chemicals or benzene, as they can damage the finish. Alcohol may be used only to clean the stainless-steel pan or the draft ring.
  • Environment: For optimal performance, place the scale on a stable, vibration-free base, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature variations, and drafts from windows, radiators, or air conditioners.
  • Battery Management: The Power menu allows configuration of backlight settings (always OFF, always ON, auto-off after 30s with power supply/battery, auto-off after 30s with batteries only) and battery charging options (charging OFF/ON, battery charge level display). Disposable alkaline batteries should not be charged, as this can be hazardous and damage the scale.
  • Auto Off: The scale can be configured to never turn off automatically, or to always turn off automatically after 30s of no use (with or without batteries).

The manual also provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common errors and indicators, offering solutions for issues such as "Below Zero," "Taring is not allowed," "Pan error," "Exceeded capacity," "Pan not cleared on power-up," "Average piece weight is too low," "Sample reference weight is too low," "Scale will not turn on," "Inaccurate calibration," and "Irregular environment."
