Overview

This document describes the Lithium Battery Charger for the Toro Greensmaster® eFlex® 2120 Traction Unit, specifically models 04065 and 04090. It serves as an operator's manual, providing essential information for safe and effective use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the charger.

Function Description

The Lithium Battery Charger is designed to safely and efficiently charge Toro Model 04069 or 04049 eFlex type lithium-ion rechargeable batteries used in the Greensmaster® eFlex® 2120 Traction Unit. The charger converts AC input power into the appropriate DC power required to replenish the battery pack. It is engineered for unattended use, allowing for charging over extended periods, including winter storage. The charger includes various safety features and indicators to ensure proper operation and alert the user to potential issues. Its primary function is to maintain the battery pack's charge, ensuring the traction unit is ready for operation.

Usage Features

The charger is designed for straightforward operation, with clear instructions provided to guide users through the charging process.

Preparation for Charging:

Before connecting the charger, users are advised to ensure the operating area is well-ventilated and free of bystanders, especially children. Proper attire, including eye protection, long pants, slip-resistant footwear, and hearing protection, is recommended. Metal items like rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches should be removed to prevent short-circuits or severe burns if they come into contact with the battery. The machine's ignition switch must be in the OFF position for at least 5 seconds to allow it to power down completely before connecting the battery pack to avoid arcing. The charger is compatible with nominal 120 and 240 VAC circuits and is equipped with a grounding plug for 120 VAC. For 240 V circuits, users should contact an authorized Toro distributor for the correct power cord. It is crucial to use this charger exclusively for Toro lithium-ion batteries as specified in the equipment's Operator's Manual; attempting to charge other battery types can lead to overheating, product malfunctions, property damage, and injury.

Connecting to Power Source:

The charger features a 3-prong grounded plug (type B) to reduce the risk of electric shock. If the plug does not fit the wall receptacle, other grounded plug types are available, and users should contact an authorized Toro distributor. The charger or power supply cord plug should not be altered. The charger plug on the power supply cord is inserted into the matching input power socket on the charger, and then the wall plug end of the power supply cord is inserted into a grounded electrical outlet. Users are warned against handling the plug or charger with wet hands or while standing in water. The power supply cord should be inspected periodically for damage and not used if compromised.

Charging the Battery:

To begin charging, the machine should be parked in the designated location, and the parking brake set. The power to the machine must be turned off. The T-handle connector is then pulled off the main battery power supply connector affixed to the battery tray. Both battery pack and charger connectors should be cleaned and dried, avoiding strong solvents that could degrade the plastic. Dielectric grease should not be used on the connectors or battery contacts. The positive connectors (marked with a "+") are aligned and pushed together until they lock. The charger is designed to operate within specific temperature ranges: 0° to 45°C (32° to 113°F) for recommended charging, -10° to 0°C (14° to 32°F) for low-temperature charging (reduced current), and 45° to 60°C (113° to 140°F) for high-temperature charging (reduced current).

Monitoring the Charging Process:

The charger includes an LCD status display that shows messages during charging. An error indicator light will flash amber or light solid red if a fault occurs, accompanied by an error message on the LCD display (e.g., E-0-1-1). Users are directed to the Troubleshooting section of the manual for corrective actions. Once charging is complete, the battery charging indicator light will show solid green.

Disconnecting the Charger:

After charging, the charger T-handle connector is disconnected from the main battery power supply connector, ensuring not to pull on the cables. The T-handle and cord are placed in a storage position to prevent damage. The T-handle and battery pack connectors should be clean. The T-handle is reconnected to the battery pack connector. Finally, the machine power is turned on, and the battery charge displayed on the InfoCenter is verified against the charger's reading.

Mounting the Charger:

The charger can be mounted on a wall using keyholes on its back. Screws with a 6 mm (1/4 inch) diameter shaft and an 11 mm (0.45 inch) head diameter are required. Users should survey their work area to find a safe and effective location for mounting.

Safety Decals:

The charger features several safety and instructional decals that are easily visible. These include warnings about keeping the charger out of rain and wet conditions, avoiding touching hot surfaces, not opening the battery or using a damaged one, explosion hazards (avoiding sparks, fire, open flames, or smoking), asphyxiation hazards (due to poisonous fumes or toxic gases, emphasizing not charging in enclosed spaces), and electric shock hazards (not performing maintenance on the battery).

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the Lithium Battery Charger is crucial for its longevity and safe operation. While most electrical repairs should be performed by an authorized Toro distributor, operators can perform several routine maintenance tasks.

General Maintenance:

The charger should be stored indoors in a dry, secured place, out of reach of unauthorized users, when not in use. It should be handled with care. The cords should be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth after each use and coiled when not in use. Periodic examination of the cords for damage is recommended, and any damaged cords should be replaced with Toro-approved parts. The charger case can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth.

Servicing:

The charger is a solid-state device and typically does not require service under normal operating conditions. If service is needed, it should be taken to an authorized Toro distributor. Repairs by unauthorized service centers may damage connected equipment and void the warranty. Users are warned not to disassemble the charger, as incorrect reassembly can lead to electric shock or fire. The power cord should be unplugged from the outlet before any maintenance or cleaning to reduce the risk of electric shock, as turning off the power switch alone does not eliminate this risk. All fasteners should be checked frequently for proper tightness.

Storage:

Before storing, the charger should be disconnected from the battery and the power supply cord from the charger. The power supply cord should be coiled securely and examined for wear or damage, replacing it if necessary. The charger itself should be examined for worn, loose, or damaged parts, and an authorized Toro distributor contacted for assistance if needed. The charger should be stored in a clean, dry place where it will not be bumped, damaged, or exposed to caustic fumes. If the charger has received a sharp blow, been dropped, or otherwise damaged, it should not be operated and instead taken to an authorized Toro distributor.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for error codes displayed on the LCD. Error codes (e.g., E-0-0-1, F-0-0-1) indicate specific problems such as battery high voltage, BMS or battery fault, battery amp hour limit exceeded, reverse polarity, high or low AC voltage errors, charger initialization failure, re-programming failure, or internal charger faults. For each problem, a possible cause and corrective action are listed. Corrective actions range from ensuring secure connections and correct battery voltage to checking AC sources, resetting the charger, or contacting an authorized Toro distributor for more complex issues. For instance, if an internal charger fault occurs, users are instructed to remove AC and battery connections for at least 30 seconds and retry; if the fault persists, an authorized Toro distributor should be contacted.
