Overview

The Toro 20V Max Li-Ion Battery and Battery Charger (Models 88500 and 88502) is a power system designed for use with Toro 20V Max tools. This system includes a battery charger and a lithium-ion battery pack, providing portable power for various applications.

Function Description:

The battery charger (Model 88500) is designed to recharge Toro 20V Max lithium-ion battery packs. It converts AC input power into DC output power suitable for charging the battery. The charger features LED indicators to communicate the charging status, including whether the battery is charging, fully charged, or too warm to charge. It also incorporates backfeed protection to prevent energy flow back into the power source.

The lithium-ion battery pack (Model 88502) provides a portable power source for compatible Toro 20V Max tools. It is designed for easy insertion and removal from tools and the charger. The battery pack includes LED indicators to show its current level of charge, allowing users to monitor power availability.

Important Technical Specifications:

Battery Charger (Model 88500):

  • Input: 100-120V AC, 50-60Hz, 70W
  • Output: 18V MAX* DC 2.6A
  • Nominal Voltage (under workload): 18V DC
  • Charging Temperature Range: 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F)
  • Safety Certifications: UL US Listed, Class 2 Battery Charger
  • Features: Voltage selector switch for 120 volt position (U.S.A.) or other positions for international use, backfeed protection.

Lithium-Ion Battery (Model 88502):

  • Voltage: 20V MAX* DC
  • Energy Capacity: 36Wh
  • Nominal Voltage (under workload): 18V DC
  • Discharge Temperature Range: -15°C to 50°C (5°F to 122°F)
  • Safety Features: Protection against short circuits, overheating, and incineration.
  • Recycling: Lithium-ion batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly at a battery recycling facility.

Note: "Maximum initial voltage without workload, as rated by battery manufacturer. Under workload, nominal voltage is 18V DC."

Usage Features:

Battery Charger:

  • Voltage Selection: Users must ensure the voltage selector switch is set to the correct voltage position (e.g., 120 volt for U.S.A.) before plugging in. For international use, an attachment plug adapter may be required.
  • Charging Process: To charge, the battery pack is inserted upside down into the charger, aligning the battery terminal with the charger's slot until it clicks into place.
  • LED Indicators: The charger's LED indicators provide clear feedback:
    • Red (Top) / Red (Bottom): Battery is charging.
    • Red (Top) / Green (Bottom): Fully charged.
    • Red (Top) / Orange (Bottom): Battery is too warm; remove for approximately 30 minutes to cool.
  • Battery Removal: To remove the battery from the charger, press the release button and slide the battery backward out of the charger.

Battery Pack:

  • Insertion into Tool: Align the tongue of the battery pack with the cavity in the tool's handle housing and push until the latch locks into place.
  • Charge Level Indicators: The battery pack itself has LED indicators to show its current charge level.
  • Initial Charge: Battery packs are not fully charged when purchased and should be charged until the LED indicators turn green before first use.
  • Storage: For prolonged storage, the battery should be removed from the tool.
  • Overheat Protection: The battery will automatically stop working if it overheats to prevent damage. It should be removed from the tool and allowed to cool before reuse.
  • Moisture Protection: If moisture is present on the battery leads, it can cause tool malfunction. The battery should be dried before use.

Maintenance Features:

Battery Pack Preparation for Recycling:

  • Terminal Protection: Upon removal for recycling, the battery pack's terminals should be covered with heavy-duty adhesive tape to prevent short circuits.
  • No Disassembly: Users are warned not to destroy or disassemble the battery pack or remove any of its components.
  • Proper Disposal: Lithium-ion batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly at the nearest battery recycling facility, adhering to manufacturer's instructions and local regulations.

General Safety and Troubleshooting:

  • Overheating: If the battery is too warm, the charger will indicate this, and the battery should be removed and allowed to cool. Using a hot battery can reduce operating time.
  • Moisture: Ensure the battery is dry before placing it into a tool or charger to prevent malfunction.
  • Proposition 65 Warning: The product's power cord contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Users are advised to wash hands after handling.
  • Fire/Chemical Burn Risk: Do not disassemble, heat above 40°C (104°F), or incinerate the battery. Replace batteries only with Toro genuine batteries to avoid fire or explosion risks.
  • Disposal of Used Battery: Dispose of used batteries promptly and keep them away from children.
  • Charger Orientation: The power unit (charger) is intended to be correctly oriented in a vertical or floor-mounted position.
