5. Add the specified amount of the recommended
oil; refer to Changing and Draining the Oil in
Engine Maintenance , pag e 21 .
6. Star t the engine and c hec k the filter for leaks .
7. Stop the engine and c hec k the oil lev el; refer to
Chec king the Oil Lev el in Engine Maintenance ,
pag e 21 . Add oil if necessar y .
Servicing the Spark Plug
Chec k the spark plug after ev er y 100 operating
hours . Mak e sure that the air g ap betw een the
center and side electrodes is cor rect before
installing the spark plug . Use a 23 spark plug
wrenc h for remo ving and installing the spark
plug(s) and a g apping tool/feeler g aug e to c hec k
and adjust the air g ap .
R e place the spark plug ev er y 300 operating hours
or yearly .
T ype: NGK BPR5ES or DENSO W16EPR-U (or
equi v alent)
Air Gap: 0.028-0.031 inc h (0.70-0.80 mm)
Removing the Spark Plug
1. Diseng ag e the blade control switc h, set the
parking brak e , stop the engine , and remo v e
the k ey .
2. Pull the wire off of the spark plug ( Figure 29 ).
Clean around the spark plug to prev ent dir t
from falling into the engine and potentially
causing damag e .

Checking the Spark Plug
1. Look at the center of the spark plug ( Figure 30 ).
If y ou see light bro wn or g ra y on the insulator ,
the engine is operating properly . A blac k
coating on the insulator usually means the air
cleaner is dir ty .
Important: Nev er clean the spar k plug .
Al w ays r eplace the spar k plug when it has
a black coating , w or n electr odes, an oil y
film, or cracks.
2. Chec k the g ap betw een the center and side
electrodes ( Figure 30 ). Bend the side electrode
( Figure 30 ) if the g ap is not cor rect.

Installing the Spark Plug
1. Mak e sure that the air g ap is set cor rectly .
2. Install the spark plug b y hand to a v oid
cross-threading . Tighten new spark plugs
1/2 tur n with a spark plug wrenc h. W hen
reinstalling the spark plug previously remo v ed,
only tighten 1/8-1/4 tur n.
3. Push the wire onto the spark plug ( Figure 29 ).
