Overview

This document is a manual for the Toyota RAV4 Remote Engine Starter (RES) with Smart Key, specifically for the 2013 model year. The part number for this accessory is PT398-42130. It is crucial to note that this device is designed for Smart Key-equipped vehicles only and should not be installed in non-Smart vehicles. Furthermore, the Techstream Lite software is explicitly not to be used with this RES system.

Function Description:

The Remote Engine Starter (RES) allows the user to remotely start the vehicle's engine. This feature enhances convenience, especially in varying weather conditions, by allowing the cabin to pre-heat or pre-cool before entry. The system integrates with the vehicle's existing Smart Key functionality. A key aspect of its operation involves a hood switch, which acts as a safety mechanism, preventing the engine from starting remotely if the hood is open. The installation process includes connecting various harness components to the vehicle's electrical system, including the RES ECU, and performing a registration procedure using a Techstream Notebook (not Techstream Lite) to ensure proper communication and functionality with the vehicle's ECU.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Part Number: PT398-42130
  • Vehicle Compatibility: Toyota RAV4 with Smart Key, 2013 model year.
  • Hood Switch Torque: 3.1 in·lbf (0.25~0.35 N·m) for the screw. It is emphasized not to re-use the screw once installed due to adhesive weakening.
  • Hood Lock Assembly Bolt Torque: 71 in·lbf (8.0 N·m).
  • Battery Cable Torque: 5.4 N·m (48 in·lbf) for the negative battery cable.
  • Fuse Requirement: Verification of a 30 Amp Fuse in the D/C Cut is required for registration.
  • Registration Time Limit: Once the 1P RES Diagnostic Connectors are connected, there is a 10-minute window to complete the registration steps.
  • Techstream Requirement: A Techstream Notebook (not Techstream Lite) is mandatory for the registration process.

Usage Features:

  • Remote Start Activation: To activate the remote start, the user typically presses the remote control's lock button twice within 2 seconds, then presses and holds the lock button for 3 seconds.
  • Safety Features:
    • Hood Switch: Prevents remote start if the hood is open. The manual details proper installation of the hood switch, ensuring the lever is positioned correctly and the switch is held by its sides during installation to prevent breakage.
    • Shift Lever Position: The vehicle must be in "Park" (P) position for remote start to function.
    • Brake Set: The parking brake must be set.
    • Doors Closed: All doors must be closed for the remote start to operate.
    • Engine Stop upon Hood Release: If the engine is running via remote start and the hood release handle is pulled, the engine will stop.
    • Engine Stop upon Shift Lever Movement: If the engine is running via remote start and the shift lever is moved out of "Park," the engine will stop.
  • Hazard Light Feedback: The hazard lights flash to provide feedback on the remote start status:
    • One flash indicates successful engine start/stop.
    • Three flashes indicate a failed procedure.
    • Repeated flashes for 10 seconds indicate engine stop due to hood release.
  • Security Alarm Integration: If the vehicle is equipped with an OE Factory Alarm and is armed, pulling the hood release handle during remote start will trigger the security alarm.
  • Diagnostic Connectors: The 1P RES Diagnostic Connectors are used for the registration process and must be disconnected and secured with electrical tape after successful registration.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Installation Checks: The manual emphasizes checking for existing damage to the vehicle before installation and ensuring proper vehicle protection (covers, blankets, cleaning chemicals) during the process.
  • Post-Installation Checks (Checklist): A comprehensive checklist is provided to ensure proper functionality and appearance after installation:
    • Accessory Function Checks: Verifies remote start operation, hood switch safety, and shift lever safety features.
    • Vehicle Appearance Check: Ensures no damage (scuffs, scratches) was caused during installation.
    • Vehicle Function Checks: A detailed list of vehicle functions (e.g., dome lights, horn, gauges, warning lights, wipers, power windows, etc.) to be checked to confirm no unintended issues arose from the installation.
  • Cleaning: VDC approved cleaner and cleaning methods are specified for the engine room label area, and household glass cleaner for the door window label area.
  • Owner's Manual Placement: The RES Owner's Manual, sealed in its protective bag, must be placed in the glove box.
  • Labeling: Engine room and window labels (English for US, Spanish for Mexico) are to be attached as shown in the diagrams, with specific instructions for alignment and handling to avoid touching the adhesive surface.
  • Wire Tie Usage: Specific instructions are given for securing harnesses and connectors using wire ties to maintain a tidy and secure installation.
  • Screw and Clip Handling: Warnings are provided against re-using screws and forcing retainer clips to ensure the integrity of the connections.
