Overview

The TRFSD240PE & TRFSD240PERL are 240VAC mains powered single station and/or interconnectable (24 units) photoelectric smoke alarms. They feature a 9V replaceable battery backup (model TRFSD240PE) or a built-in rechargeable battery backup (model TRFSD240PERL). Both models include a test and hush control and a low battery indication.

Function Description:

These smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke and provide an audible warning to occupants. The photoelectric sensing technology is effective for detecting smouldering fires. The alarms can operate as standalone units or be interconnected with up to 24 other smoke alarms, heat alarms, or visual signaling devices from Tradeforce, including models HA240 and SL240, and isolation relay model RK10A/9. Interconnection allows all alarms in the system to sound when one detects smoke, ensuring a widespread alert. The built-in hush control allows temporary silencing of the alarm for approximately 5 minutes in cases of nuisance alarms (e.g., from cooking). A test button is provided for regular functional checks.

Usage Features:

  • Recommended Locations:
    • Locate an alarm for each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.
    • Try to monitor the exit path as the bedrooms are usually farthest from an exit.
    • If more than one sleeping area exists, locate additional alarms in each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms.
    • Locate additional alarms to monitor any stairway as stairways act like chimneys for smoke and heat.
    • Locate at least one alarm on every floor level.
    • Locate an alarm in every room where a smoker sleeps.
    • Locate an alarm in every room where electrical appliances are operated (e.g., portable heaters or humidifiers).
    • Locate an alarm in every room where someone sleeps with the door closed.
    • Locate an alarm in every room where a closed door may prevent an alarm not located in that room from waking the sleeper.
    • Smoke, heat, and other combustion products rise to the ceiling and spread horizontally. Mounting the alarm on the ceiling in the center of the room is preferred.
    • For mobile home installation, select a location carefully to avoid thermal barrier that may form at the ceiling.
    • When mounting alarms on the ceiling, locate it at least 300mm away from the side wall and 300mm away from any corner.
    • When mounting alarms on a wall, use the inside wall. The recommended position is between 300mm and 500mm off the ceiling.
    • For sloping ceilings, the alarm should be located at least 500mm away from the apex but should not exceed 1500mm.
    • Avoid locating smoke alarms at both ends of a bedroom hallway or large room if the hallway or room is more than 9m long.
    • Do not locate smoke alarms in kitchen areas due to potential nuisance alarms from cooking fumes.
  • Avoid These Locations:
    • Dusty areas, dust particles may cause false alarms.
    • Humid areas (e.g., bathroom) where moisture can cause false alarms.
    • Insect-infested areas.
    • Within 0.9m of a door to a kitchen, bathroom containing a tub or shower, ceiling or whole house ventilating fans, or other high flow areas.
    • Near fluorescent lights or other electrical equipment due to electromagnetic interference or "noise."
    • Where detector guards are used unless the combination (alarm and guard) has been evaluated and found suitable.
  • Installation:
    • Installation must be carried out by qualified (licensed) electricians only.
    • The smoke alarm is installed by sliding it onto the mounting base.
    • Connect supply cable to terminal block and fix terminal cover.
    • Align and slide smoke alarm up onto mounting base.
    • Switch on power and check the green light on alarm cover. It should be lit when mains power is supplied, indicating the smoke alarm is properly connected to the mounting base.
    • Secure Tamper Locking Pin (supplied) to smoke alarm.
    • Test alarm by pressing Test button.
  • Operation:
    • Red LED: Flashes every 40 seconds in normal operation. Solid red light indicates smoke alarm activated. Flashes every 32 seconds during a test.
    • Green LED: Solid green light indicates AC mains power is present.
    • Hush Feature: Pressing the "HUSH" button temporarily silences the alarm for approximately 5 minutes. The smoke alarm will reactivate after approximately 5 minutes and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are still present.
  • 9V Terminal and Remote Test & Hush:
    • A 9Vdc positive output is available for following applications: as an output to operate smoke alarm as an early warning indicator system.
    • The 9V terminal in this smoke alarm is intended for use with a security/fire alarm panel where a signal from that panel can be used to activate a single Smoke Alarm or interconnected Smoke Alarms to alert residents/occupants that an alarm has been activated elsewhere and there may be cause to evacuate the area.
    • The diagram shows the 9V terminal and the Signal terminal, marked SW, connected to the N/O (normally open) contacts of a suitable relay, the coil of which energized from an extra-low voltage signal from an alarm panel, closes the contacts thereby activating the Smoke Alarm(s). This can be an Early Warning Indicator System.
    • The presence of an audible sound from the smoke alarm and the absence of a flashing RED LED in the smoke alarm(s), means the smoke alarm(s) have been activated externally. It is an Early Warning Indicator.
    • The Remote Test & Hush Plate (LIFTHP) is an optional accessory that allows remote testing and silencing of the smoke alarm.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement (TRFSD240PE):
    • The smoke alarm uses one 9V battery to automatically provide back-up power to the alarm if AC power fails.
    • The battery will operate the alarm for approximately one to three months with AC power off.
    • The smoke alarm has a low battery indicator that will cause the unit to chirp and flash the Red LED at approximately 32 second intervals for a minimum of 7 days.
    • Missing battery with main power connected will cause the unit to chirp and flash the Red LED at approximately 32 second intervals.
    • Replace battery when chirping occurs.
    • To replace battery, remove alarm from mounting base (see section 6.2) and remove the battery from compartment. Replace the old battery with a new one.

    • Warning: Use of inferior batteries or incorrect types may cause a malfunction of the alarm. When replacing the battery and on reconnection of the detector to the base plate, make sure that the detector is fully connected and flush with the base plate. Verify that the Green LED is ON after reinstalling the alarm on the base plate.
  • Battery Test:
    • Switch off mains power. The Green LED on the smoke alarm will be OFF.
    • Test alarm by pressing on the Test Button for a few seconds. This should sound the alarm.
    • If the battery module has a fault, the alarm will chirp every 32 seconds.
    • Watch the Red LED for about 32 seconds. It should flash at least once.
    • Switch on mains power only when smoke alarm passes the above tests. The Green LED on the smoke alarm will come ON.
  • Rechargeable Battery (TRFSD240PERL):
    • The rechargeable battery must be checked periodically. A weekly battery test is recommended.
    • Smoke alarm must be connected to mains power for 8 hours for the battery to be fully charged.
    • If the battery is weak, the Red LED will flash every 32 seconds and sound a chirp.
    • The rechargeable battery will supply the alarm for at least 7 days without sound chirp once AC power is disconnected. In normal status, the battery has life of over 10 years.
