Overview

This document provides service information for the Trane 4YCY4036B-SF-1H and 4YCY4036B1075/1096B single packaged gas heating/electric cooling units.

Function Description

These units are single packaged systems designed for both gas heating and electric cooling. They are controlled by a comfort control (thermostat) and operate automatically once the desired mode (HEAT or COOL) is set. The indoor fan can be set to continuous operation (ON) or automatic (AUTO), with AUTO recommended in humid climates to prevent discomfort or high relative humidity. Safety devices are integrated to protect against abnormal operating conditions, such as excessive supply air temperature, flame rollout, or inadequate combustion air pressure.

Usage Features

Cooling Cycle: When the comfort control is set to COOL and the fan to AUTO, the compressor contactor (CC) and indoor fan motor (IDM) are energized. The compressor (CPR) and outdoor fan motor (ODM) operate, provided safety controls are closed. The indoor fan motor (IDM) also operates. The thermostat cycles the compressor and fans to maintain the desired temperature. If the comfort control fan is set to ON, the indoor fan motor (IDM) runs continuously, regardless of compressor and condenser fan operation.

Heating Cycle (2-stage thermostat):

  • 1st Stage Call: The control module (IGN) initiates a self-check. After verifying open pressure switch (PS) contacts, closed limit switch (TCO) contacts, and closed flame rollout (FL) switch, the induced draft blower (CBM) energizes on high speed for ~5 seconds. Once CBM reaches speed, PS contacts close, and CBM switches to low speed for a 20-second prepurge. The gas valve (GV) and spark igniter (IP) energize. The flame detector (FD) confirms ignition within 7 seconds. The indoor fan motor (IDM) energizes at low speed after ~45 seconds and continues throughout the heating cycle.
  • 2nd Stage Call (after 1st stage): The control signals a call for second stage heat. CBM energizes on high speed, and the gas valve opens to second stage. After ~30 seconds, the indoor blower energizes on high speed.
  • 2nd Stage Satisfied (1st stage still called): CBM reduces to low speed, and the gas valve reduces to first stage. After ~30 seconds, the indoor blower motor reduces to low speed.
  • 1st Stage Satisfied: The gas valve (GV) closes. CBM de-energizes after ~5 seconds postpurge. IDM continues for the fan off period (field selectable 60 or 90 seconds) before de-energizing.
  • 1-stage Comfort Control: If W1/W2 are jumped, the unit operates as a 1-stage system with a 10-minute delay for 2nd stage heat from 1st stage ignition.

Safety Sequences:

  • Temperature Limit Switch (TCO): Located on the blower barrier, it protects against excessive supply air temperature. If it opens, the gas valve closes, and operation is prevented until the switch closes.
  • Rollout Switch (RO): Located in the gas compartment near the burner inlet, it's a manual reset device protecting against flame rollout. If it opens, the gas valve de-energizes, and the control (IGN) locks out the system. The RO must be reset manually.
  • Pressure Switch (PS): Located in the upper right side of the gas compartment, it ensures adequate combustion air pressure. If pressure against the induced draft blower outlet is excessive, the PS reacts, shutting off the gas valve until acceptable combustion pressure is available.
  • Ignition Failure: If the control (IGN) doesn't sense flame within the first trial for ignition, the gas valve de-energizes. The IGN initiates a 60-second interpurge, followed by a second ignition attempt. This sequence repeats for a third attempt. If all three attempts fail, the control locks out.
  • Loss of Flame: If flame loss occurs during a heating cycle, the IGN closes the gas valve and cycles through the ignition trial sequence.
  • Control Lockout Reset: If a control lockout occurs, the IGN retries a complete ignition sequence in 1 hour. It can be manually reset by removing power or by turning the thermostat from ON to OFF for ~3 seconds, then back ON.

Maintenance Features

Refrigerant Charging (Cooling above 55°F OD Ambient): The preferred method is to weigh in the factory charge per the unit nameplate. If weighing is not practical, the following method can be used for systems with indoor TXVs:

  1. Indoor Temperature: Maintain between 70°F and 80°F.
  2. Stabilization: Allow the system to operate for a minimum of 20 minutes after charge adjustments to stabilize.
  3. Measurements: Measure Liquid Line Temperature and Refrigerant Pressure at service valves in the compressor compartment.
  4. Adjustment: Use the R-410A Subcooling Charging Table to match liquid line temperature and pressure. Add refrigerant to raise pressure or remove to lower pressure. Wait 20 minutes after each adjustment.
  5. Verification: Once correctly charged, refer to System Pressure Curves (page 3) to verify typical performance.

Troubleshooting Chart: A detailed troubleshooting chart is provided, categorizing faults into "Refrigerant Circuit" and "Electrical." It lists common system faults and their primary (P) and secondary (S) causes, such as:

  • Refrigerant Circuit: Liquid pressure too high/low, suction pressure too high/low, liquid refrigerant floodback (TXV/Cap. Tube System), I.D. coil frosting, compressor runs inadequate or no cooling.
  • Electrical: Compressor & O.D. fan do not start, compressor will not start but O.D. fan runs, O.D. fan won't start, compressor hums but will not start, compressor cycles on IOL, I.D. blower won't start.

IGN Diagnostic Indicators Flash Codes: The IGN control module provides diagnostic flash codes via an LED:

  • Steady OFF: Check power or failed board.
  • Slow Flash Rate (3/4 sec on, 1/4 sec off): Normal, no call for heat.
  • Fast Flash Rate (1/4 sec on, 1/4 sec off): Not used.
  • Steady ON: Normal, no call for heat.
  • 2 Flashes: System lockout: Failed to detect or sustain flame.
  • 3 Flashes: Pressure switch problem detected.
  • 4 Flashes: High Limit switch protection device open.
  • 5 Flashes: Flame sensed and gas valve not energized or flame sensed and no "W" signal.
  • 6 Flashes: Flame Rollout Switch open.
  • 7 Flashes: Thermostat miswired; W1 & W2. The pause between groups of fast flashes is 3 seconds.

General Safety:

  • Hazardous Voltage: Disconnect power and discharge capacitors before servicing.
  • Refrigerant Handling: Contains R-410A under high pressure. Recover refrigerant before opening the system. Use only R-410A and approved POE compressor oil.
  • Grounding: Reconnect all grounding devices after service.
  • Gas Safety: Exposure to fuel substances or by-products of incomplete combustion can cause health hazards. Gas piping must be done by a Licensed Plumber or Gas Fitter.
  • Explosion Hazard: Propane gas is heavier than air and may collect in low areas. Install a gas detecting warning device if the furnace is in a basement or confined space.
  • Unit Operation: Do not operate the unit without evaporator fan or coil access panels in place.
  • Technician Safety: Electrical supply must be disconnected and the main gas valve turned off during installation and service. If operating checks require the unit to be running, technicians must recognize hazards and proceed safely.
