The Trane Purifier Plus™ Purge Emission Collection Canister is designed to be integrated into the exhaust line of a Trane Purifier Purge system. Its primary function is to "filter" refrigerant from the purge exhaust using activated carbon, thereby collecting it for later recovery and regeneration. This system, when properly applied with a Trane Purifier Purge, aims to achieve "near zero" refrigerant emissions from the purging of non-condensable gases from low-pressure chillers.
Function Description:
The canister contains activated carbon that adsorbs refrigerant from the purge exhaust. Once the carbon becomes saturated with refrigerant, the canister is removed and returned to a Trane authorized facility for regeneration. During regeneration, the collected refrigerant is extracted from the carbon and recycled. The canisters are then cleaned, tested, and made available for reuse. This process helps in complying with Federal CFC/HCFC Venting Regulations by ensuring that refrigerant is reclaimed rather than released into the atmosphere.
The Purifier Plus canisters are effective for chillers operating on CFC-11, CFC-113, and HCFC-123 refrigerants. It is crucial to note that the Purifier Plus can only be used with Trane Model PRGA, PRGB, and PRGC Purifier Purges. Using it with other purges could lead to potential safety hazards or damage to the purge due to partial restriction of the exhaust.

- (1) Holding bracket
- (2) Mounting brackets and hardware
- (1) PRG-IOM-3E manual

Installation:
The mounting location of the canister is determined by chiller style, options (e.g., free-cooling, hot gas bypass), and service access. It is recommended to securely mount the canister to the chiller, off the floor, in a dry, clean location.
- Mounting: The canister is mounted in a holding bracket. V-brackets are provided for mounting to curved condenser surfaces, and the bracket has holes for direct mounting to a chiller leg.
- Tubing: 3/8" OD refrigeration-grade copper tubing is required for connections. An inlet tube connects from the purge exhaust to the canister inlet (center of the tank), and an outlet tube connects from the canister outlet to the chiller vent line.
- Exhaust Line: Ensure no restrictions in the exhaust line; any valves must be fully open during use.
- Labeling: The "Change Purifier Plus Canister" label (Figure 4) on the Purifier Purge must be updated. The purge pump out timer value at installation plus the appropriate value from Table 1 (based on model and refrigerant type) should be recorded on line A. Three years should be added to the installation date and recorded on line B.
- Nameplate: Requested information, including refrigerant type, must be recorded on the canister nameplate (Figure 5).
Tank Replacement:
The canister needs replacement when the activated carbon is saturated. This is determined by:
- Pump Out Time: When the accumulated pump out time on the Purifier Purge timer reaches the value listed on line "A" of the "Change Purifier Plus Canister" label.
- Date: When the date on line "B" of the "Change Purifier Plus Canister" label is reached.
- Weight: The most accurate method is to weigh the cylinder. The tare weight is found on a sticker on the tank. If the current tank weight is more than 6 lbs over the tare weight, it's time to exchange the tank.
Removing the Old Canister:
- Disconnect and plug the 1/4" line entering the pump out compressor.
- Remove the bypass cap from the pump out compressor inlet tee.
- Turn on the pump out system using the purge service switch for 10-15 seconds to pull room air into the compressor and force purge exhaust into the Purifier Plus canister.
- Disconnect copper lines from the full canister and cap the inlet and outlet ports.
- Install the replacement tank and update all label information as per the initial installation steps.
- Reconnect tubing and replace the cap.
Return Instructions:
The "Replacement" Purifier Plus kit includes shipping materials and instructions for returning saturated canisters for regeneration.
- Inspect: Confirm all items listed for the replacement canister were received.
- Document: Record all required information on the provided data sheet and on tank labels (nameplate/stickers), purge, and chiller nameplate. This information is crucial for proper "leak credit."
- Package: Remove the new canister and place the saturated canister and completed data sheet into the shipping carton. Tightly connect caps on the saturated canister's fittings before sealing.
- Seal: Seal the carton with heavy-duty shipping tape.
- Label: Enter your address and ZIP code on the UPS A.R.S. Label and apply it over the existing mailing label on top of the carton. Retain the detachable receipt.
- Send: Bring the package to any UPS pickup/delivery location or Customer Counter. The A.R.S. package is accepted free of charge.
Maintenance Features:
- General Maintenance: Keep the canister clean and dry in a corrosive-free environment.
- Painting: DO NOT PAINT THE TANK. Painting will add weight and invalidate the tank data, which is used to track the performance of the carbon.
Warnings and Cautions:
- WARNING: Do not pressurize the tank from an external source, as this could cause rupture, leading to death or serious injury.
- WARNING: Use the tank ONLY on specified refrigerants having low pressure. Failure to do so may result in personal injury or death.
- CAUTION: Before installation, verify that the refrigerant type marked on the Purifier Plus canister matches the refrigerant in the chiller to avoid contamination.
- CAUTION: The refrigerant must be evacuated from the chiller before any welding is done to the condenser shell.
- WARNING: The contents of this canister must be reclaimed at a Trane authorized facility. Disposal of the canister or its contents in any other way may violate Federal CFC/HCFC Venting Regulations.
