Fitting Cylinder Block
.
Ignition
Timing.
The timing of the engine can be carried out at this stage
if
desired.
The information given on poge
67
(Magneto) and poge
68
(Coil) applies when the cylinder
head is fitted. The marked timing stick should be discarded in favour of a depth gauge,
by which means an accurate measurement can be made directly on top of the piston.
Inlet Push Rods
and
Covers. Fit the rubber oil seal to the tappet block and then
assemble to the tappets and block the push rods and cover. The oil drain pipes
should be assembled to the cover tube before re-positioning to the engine.
Inlet Manifold. Assemble the inlet manifold to the cylinder head with the new
joint washers. In the case of the cast iron cylinder head, we recommend the use of
jointing compound with the joint washers. The reason for this is that
as
the manifold
and cylinder head are manufactured from dissimilar metals, a slight amount of
"weave" takes place between them which may cause the washer to become dislodged.
Cylinder Head.
Grease the head gasket and
fit
to
the cylinder block. Assemble
the head
to
the block and lightly tighten down the four short bolts.
lnlet Rocker Box. Grease the rocker box gaskets and upper push rod cover
washer and assemble
to
the rocker box. Turn the engine over until both inlet
push rods are nearly level and then assemble the rocker box to the cylinder head
and push rod cover. Check that the gaskets have not been misplaced during
assembly and then enter the two short rocker box holding bolts and firmly screw
down.
Fit and tighten the two rocker boxes to cylinder head nuts.
Exhaust Rocker Box. Fit the push rods and covers (with drain pipes fitted) to
the tappet block. The rocker box can then be assembled in exactly the same manner
as the inlet rocker box.
Rocker
Oil
Drain
Adaptors.
Ensure that the oil drain adaptor bolts are clean
and i5en
fit
a copper washer between the oil drain banjos. Insert the adaptor and
tighten (care should be exercised when tightening into an alloy head, TR5
&
Tim).
Cylinder Head Hoidir~g Bolts.
Position the remaining four bolts (the torque
stay bolts
to
the rear) and screw down until a grip
is
felt. All eight bolts should
now be evenly tightened but do not use excessive force on the spanner. The actual
force required is
18
foot pounds
;
if tightened beyond this figure, distortion may
take place.
Ignition
Timing.
If th'e timing has been left until this stage is reached, reference
should be made to page
67
(Magneto) or page
68
(Coil).
Timing Cover.
Smear the joint face with jointing compound and assemble the
cover to the crankcase.
Employ a well fitting screwdriver when tightening the
screws.
Oil
Release Valve
and
Indicator.
Fit
the ioint washer and screw the assembly
into the timing cover.
