Overview

This document serves as a comprehensive user guide and service manual for U-Line's 3 Class 15" Nugget Ice Machine, specifically models UHNB315 and UHNP315. It provides detailed instructions for safe operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the appliance.

Function Description

The U-Line Nugget Ice Machine is designed to produce cylindrical bits of compressed ice, approximately 3/4" x 1/2" in size. It operates continuously, producing ice until the storage bin is full. As ice melts and the level drops, the machine automatically resumes production, ensuring a constant supply of fresh ice. This appliance is intended for indoor/interior applications only and should not be used in installations exposed to natural elements. It is engineered to operate efficiently within ambient temperatures ranging from 50°F (10°C) to 100°F (38°C). Higher ambient temperatures may impact ice production rates.

Usage Features

The unit offers several user-friendly features controlled via its intuitive interface:

  • ON/OFF Control: The unit can be turned on or off with a simple press and release of the designated button.
  • Ice Density Adjustment (U-Choose™): U-Line's exclusive U-Choose™ feature allows for five levels of ice density adjustment, from a firm and compact nugget (default setting 0) to a softer, more chewable ice (-5). To adjust, hold the ice density button for 5 seconds, then use the up or down arrows to select the desired setting, and confirm by pressing the light button.
  • Light Color Adjustment: The interior light color can be adjusted by holding the light button and pressing the up or down arrows to scroll through available options (White, Blue).
  • Sabbath Mode: This feature can be enabled by pressing and holding the light and up arrow buttons for 5 seconds. In Sabbath Mode, the °F / °C symbol will flash briefly, and the interior light and display will go dark, remaining so until the user manually resets the mode. The unit continues to operate normally during this time. To disable, press and release the light and up arrow buttons.
  • Door Alert Notification: If the door is left open for more than 30 minutes, an audible tone will sound every minute, and "dr" will appear on the display. Ice production will cease during this alert. Closing the door silences the alert and resets the system, resuming ice production if the bin sensor indicates a need.
  • Water Filter (UHNB315 and UHNP315 models only): These models include a water filter designed to reduce scale, dirt, particles, cloudiness, chlorine, and other off-tastes and odors, ensuring high-quality ice. The filter must remain in place during operation and should be replaced every 6 to 12 months.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of the U-Line Nugget Ice Machine. The manual outlines several key maintenance procedures:

  • Exterior Cleaning:
    • Vinyl Clad Models (Black or White): Clean surfaces with a mild detergent and warm water solution, using a soft sponge. Avoid solvent-based or abrasive cleaners. Rinse with clean water and wipe dry with a soft towel to prevent water spotting. Glass surfaces can be cleaned with a non-chlorine glass cleaner.
    • Stainless Models: Stainless steel panels, handles, and frames can discolor if exposed to chlorine gas, pool chemicals, saltwater, or bleach. Monthly cleaning with a good quality all-in-one stainless steel cleaner and polish (e.g., Claire® Stainless Steel Polish and Cleaner) is recommended. Frequent cleaning helps remove surface contamination that can lead to rust. Do not use steel wool pads or cleaners not specifically intended for stainless steel on these surfaces. For discoloring or rusting, clean quickly with Bon-Ami® or Barkeepers Friend Cleanser® and a nonabrasive cloth, always cleaning with the grain.
    • Integrated Models: Clean integrated panels according to the cabinet manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Interior Cleaning: Disconnect power before cleaning. Clean the interior and all removable components with a mild nonabrasive detergent and warm water solution, applied with a soft sponge. Rinse with a soft sponge and clean water. Avoid solvent-based or abrasive cleaners, as they can transfer taste/odor or damage the interior.
  • Nugget Ice Machine Cleaning Cycle (Automatic Clean Alert): The unit features an automatic clean alert function, indicating "CL" on the display approximately every six months with normal use. This reminds the user to perform a cleaning cycle to remove lime scale, mineral deposits, and sanitize the machine. Ice production continues when "CL" is displayed. More frequent cleaning may be necessary depending on water conditions.
    • Initiating a Cleaning Cycle: Press and hold the clean button for 10 seconds; "01" will appear.
    • Preparation: Remove the access shield and all ice from the bin. Insert the cleaning tube into the ice dispenser and slowly pour approximately 1 quart of hot water to melt any ice in the dispenser tube.
    • Cleaning Solution Application: Press and release the clean button; "02" will appear. Mix 4 ounces of SafeCLEAN Plus™ Cleaner (Part No. 80-55266-00) with 2 quarts of water. Wait for "03" to appear, then slowly pour 3/4 of the solution into the dispenser tube. Press and release the clean button.
    • Circulation and Manual Cleaning: "04" will appear, and the machine will circulate the solution for approximately 20 minutes. During this time, use the remaining solution and a sponge to wipe down the inside of the ice bin and scoop, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
    • Rinsing: When "05" appears, pour 1.5 quarts (48 oz.) of clean water into the ice dispenser tube. Press and release the clean button.
    • Final Rinses: "06" will appear. Reinstall the shield and close the door. The machine will perform a series of final rinses for approximately 15 minutes. The unit will then resume making ice, indicated by three soft tones and "ICE" scrolling on the display.
    • Important Note: Only use SafeCLEAN Plus™ Cleaner. For 3 Class models, the water filter must remain in place during cleaning.
  • Cleaning Condenser: Every six months, or more frequently depending on environmental conditions, the condenser should be cleaned to maintain operational efficiency. Disconnect electric power. Remove the front grille. Use a soft brush, vacuum, or compressed air to clean the condenser coil. Do not touch the condenser fins as they are sharp and easily damaged. Do not use any type of cleaner on the condenser unit. Reinstall the grille.
  • Extended Non-Use (Winterization): For periods of extended non-use or if the unit will be exposed to temperatures of 40°F (5°C) or less, specific steps must be followed to prevent damage from freezing.
    • Remove all consumable content.
    • Disconnect power.
    • Turn off the water supply.
    • Allow any ice on the evaporator to thaw naturally.
    • Clean and dry the interior, ensuring all water is removed.
    • Disconnect water and drain lines, ensuring all water is removed from the lines.
    • Leave the door open a minimum of 2" (50 mm) to prevent mold and mildew.
    • For models with a P60 drain pump, remove the pump, drain the water from its reservoir by turning it upside down, and then reinstall it.
    • Damage caused by freezing temperatures is not covered by the warranty. Do not put anti-freeze in the unit.
