Overview

This document describes the Utilitech Ceiling-Mount Heater, Model #CZ225ERLSCN, an electric utility heater designed for various heating requirements.

Function Description

The Utilitech Ceiling-Mount Heater is a heavy-duty electric heater intended to provide warmth in indoor locations. It features a fan-forced heat dispersion system and can be mounted on the ceiling. The heater is designed to maintain a comfortable room temperature through its adjustable heat settings and built-in thermostat. It also incorporates safety features such as overheat protection and a high limit thermal cutout to prevent damage from overheating. The unit can be controlled directly from its front-mounted control panel or via a full-function remote control.

Important Technical Specifications

The heater operates on a 240V, 60Hz, 1 Phase electrical supply and is hard-wired for installation. It offers three heat settings:

  • High: 6000W, 24A, providing 20,477 BTU/Hr.
  • Med: 4500W, 18.1A, providing 15,358 BTU/Hr.
  • Low: 3000W, 11.9A, providing 10,239 BTU/Hr.

The temperature is adjustable between 45°F (7°C) and 95°F (35°C), with a digital display that can show temperatures in Fahrenheit or Celsius. The unit is ETL approved for sale in the US and Canada and conforms to OSHA and NEC standards when installed according to instructions.

For electrical connections, copper wire suitable for at least 167°F (75°C) must be used. The minimum wire size for 6000W @240V is #8, with a maximum fuse size of 45A.

Clearance Requirements:

  • Minimum distance to floor: 8 feet
  • Minimum distance from rear of heater: 8 inches
  • Minimum distance from side of heater: 13 inches
  • Minimum distance from discharge to any object: 24 inches
  • Minimum clearance to ceiling (when not using mounting brackets): 1-5/8 inches
  • Maximum mounting height for vertical air delivery: 11 feet
  • Maximum mounting height for horizontal air delivery: 8 feet

The heater dimensions are approximately 14 inches wide, 12-1/2 inches high, and 13 inches deep (excluding mounting bracket).

Usage Features

Control Panel and Remote: The heater can be operated using the front-mounted control panel or the included full-function remote control. Both allow for adjusting temperature, heat settings, and timer functions.

Temperature Setting:

  • The temperature can be adjusted from 45°F (7°C) to 95°F (35°C) using the TEMP+ or TEMP- buttons.
  • The display blinks during adjustment and stops flashing after about 5 seconds to accept the setting.
  • The unit cycles on and off in HIGH, LOW, or MEDIUM mode to maintain the set temperature, with HIGH setting reaching the temperature faster.

Heat Settings:

  • Upon initial power-on, the heater defaults to HIGH (6000W).
  • Pressing the MODE button cycles through LOW (3000W), MEDIUM (4500W), and back to HIGH.
  • The fan starts approximately 10 seconds after initial start-up to begin heat dispersion.

Timer Function:

  • A 1 to 12-hour timer can be set using the timer button, increasing by 1 hour with each press.
  • The LED screen displays the set duration in hours.
  • To turn off the timer, press the timer button continuously until "0" is displayed.
  • Note: The timer function is not an excuse to leave the heater unattended.

Fahrenheit or Celsius Display: The display can be switched between Fahrenheit and Celsius by pressing the °F/°C button on either the unit or the remote.

Adjusting Air Flow Direction:

  • Turning the unit: If installed with a single lag bolt (as shown in Figure 3a), the entire unit can be rotated to adjust airflow (Figure 7).
  • Tilting the unit: Loosen the bracket screws (Figure 4) to tilt the heater. It must be mounted in bottom keyhole slots to maintain adequate clearance and prevent overheating.
  • Adjusting Louvers: The louvers can be adjusted to the desired position. They are designed not to close completely, and attempting to force them shut may damage the unit.

Power Indicator Light: A power indicator light above the ON/OFF switch illuminates when the heater is turned on.

Automatic Overheat Protection (Thermal Cutout): The heater automatically shuts off if the grille is obstructed or if the unit becomes too hot. It will turn on again once the temperature returns to normal. If this occurs, the cause of overheating should be determined before further further operation.

Maintenance Features

The Utilitech Ceiling-Mount Heater is designed for low maintenance due to its robust construction. However, seasonal cleaning is recommended to maintain efficiency.

Safety Precautions for Cleaning:

  • Always disconnect all power at the main service before inspecting or cleaning to prevent electric shock.
  • Exercise care to avoid damaging internal heater wiring during cleaning.
  • Ensure all connections are tight and wiring is routed away from element fins when reassembling to prevent fire hazards.

Cleaning the Heating Element:

  1. Loosen (but do not remove) the four Phillips head screws located behind the louvers in the corners of the louver housing on both sides.
  2. Lift up and pull out the louver housing (Figure 8) to access the heating element.
  3. Remove dust or lint from the heating element using a soft brush or vacuum cleaner.
  4. Replace the louver housing and tighten the Phillips head screws.
  • Any other service should be performed by an authorized service representative.

Cleaning the Fan and Motor:

  1. Remove the protective grille from the rear of the heater (Figure 9). This provides access to the fan and motor.
  2. Wipe off the fan and motor with a soft cloth or brush.
  3. The fan motor does not require lubrication.
  4. Replace the protective grille.

Troubleshooting: The manual includes an "Error Code Troubleshooting Guide" for various issues such as insufficient clearance, obstructed vents, fan not operational, inadequate wiring, and sensor problems. Digital display status indicators (E1, E2, E3) correspond to specific issues, with recommended solutions and clearing instructions provided. For persistent issues, contacting the manufacturer is advised.
