Overview

The Vaillant aroSTOR is a heat pump domestic hot water cylinder designed for efficient hot water generation. It operates within an ambient air temperature range of -7 °C to +35 °C, with an additional energy supply required for domestic hot water generation outside this range. The product is available in two models: VWL BM 200/5 and VWL BM 270/5, corresponding to cylinder volumes of 200 and 270 liters, respectively.

Function Description:

The aroSTOR primarily uses a heat pump to heat domestic hot water, prioritizing this method when the intake air temperature is within the optimal range of -7 °C to +35 °C. An electric back-up heater is integrated to supplement heating when the heat pump alone is insufficient (e.g., outside the optimal air temperature range) or when faster heating is desired (Boost mode). The system is designed to optimize energy consumption, allowing users to program operating times based on electricity tariff tiers (low-/high-tariff periods) and ambient air temperature for maximum efficiency.

Key operational modes include:

  • ECO mode: The heat pump heats the domestic hot water cylinder to the set target temperature.
  • Comfort mode: Both the heat pump and the immersion heater work to heat the domestic hot water cylinder to the set target temperature, providing faster heating.
  • Boost mode: Temporarily activates simultaneous operation of the back-up heater and heat pump for rapid hot water heating. This mode is automatically deactivated once the target temperature is reached or after a maximum of 24 hours.
  • Holiday mode: Puts the product into standby, maintaining frost protection while suspending normal time programming. This mode is programmable for durations between 1 and 99 days.
  • Limp home mode (ELEC. MODE/BOIL. MODE): Allows the product to operate using only the electric back-up heater in situations where the heat pump cannot be used (e.g., during installation, dust-intensive work, or if air pipes are not connected). This mode is for exceptional circumstances and limited use, as it does not offer energy savings.
  • Anti-legionella function: Heats the domestic hot water cylinder to a temperature between 60 °C and 70 °C to prevent Legionella growth. This function should be activated or deactivated by a competent person.
  • Frost protection function: The product includes an internal frost protection mechanism for the cylinder itself. However, the hot and cold water circuits are not protected by the product and require separate measures.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: aroSTOR VWL BM 200/5, aroSTOR VWL BM 270/5
  • Refrigerant: R 290 (inflammable, chlorine-free, does not affect the ozone layer)
  • Power Supply: 230 V (single-phase) ~ 50 Hz
  • Cylinder Volume: 200 L (VWL BM 200/5), 270 L (VWL BM 270/5)
  • Operating Air Temperature Range: -7 °C to +35 °C
  • Domestic Hot Water Temperature Range: 30 °C to 65 °C (Target temperature setting)
  • Anti-legionella Temperature: 60 °C to 70 °C
  • Frost Protection Temperature: Water temperature of at least +5 °C
  • COP (Coefficient of Performance): Indicates heating efficiency.
  • P max (Max. power consumption): Maximum electrical power drawn by the unit.
  • I max (Max amperage): Maximum current drawn from the power supply circuit.
  • IP rating/protection class: Indicates protection against ingress of solids and liquids.
  • Total weight of empty product: Specified on the data plate (e.g., 140 Kg).
  • Max. pressure in the domestic hot water circuit: Specified on the data plate.
  • Max. temperature in the domestic hot water circuit: Specified on the data plate.
  • Nominal heat output of refrigeration circuit: Specified on the data plate.
  • Max. air flow in the heat pump: Specified on the data plate.
  • Nominal heat output of the electric back-up heater: Specified on the data plate.

Usage Features:

The aroSTOR features an intuitive control panel with a menu button, an on/off button, a clock button for time settings, and a rotary knob for navigation and value adjustment.

  • Language Setting: Users can select from 16 available languages.
  • Time Setting: Allows setting the day, month, year, hour, and minutes. Note that the product does not automatically adjust for summer/winter time changes.
  • Domestic Hot Water Temperature Setting (TARG ET): Users can set the desired hot water temperature.
  • Photovoltaic Integration (T°PV ECO/T°PV MAX): If connected to a photovoltaic installation, the system can be configured to use electrical energy from the PV system to heat water to a higher temperature (T°PV ECO) or use both the heat pump and immersion heater for maximum heating (T°PV MAX).
  • Operating Time Programming: Users can program specific operating times for each day of the week, choosing between frost protection (F-P), ECO mode, or Comfort mode. This allows for optimization based on electricity tariffs and ambient temperatures. Programs can be copied, modified, or checked.
  • Display: Shows current status (compressor, fan, defrosting, back-up heater, hot water demand, ECO mode, frost protection, holiday mode, photovoltaic mode, display locked, comfort mode, programming mode, additional boiler operating) and fault messages. The display switches off after 180 seconds of inactivity.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection and Maintenance: Recommended to be carried out by a competent person to ensure safe and reliable operation and a long product life.
  • Casing Care: The casing should be cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild, solvent-free soap. Abrasive cleaners, detergents, solvents, or chlorine-containing agents should not be used.
  • Condensate Discharge Pipe and Tundish Check: Regular checks are required to ensure the condensate discharge pipe and tundish are clear and free of blockages. Any faults should be rectified by a competent person.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a section for detecting and rectifying common faults that users can address themselves before contacting a competent person.
  • Refrigerant Handling: R 290 refrigerant must only be handled, maintained, and disposed of by officially certified competent persons with appropriate protective equipment, as it is inflammable.
  • Disposal: The product and any batteries it contains must be disposed of in accordance with regulations, typically at a collection center for waste electrical or electronic equipment. Refrigerant must be completely drained into a suitable vessel by certified competent persons before disposal.
