Overview

The Valcom V-762 Talkback Desk Speaker is a specialized audio device designed for use with Valcom "handsfree" talkback control units. Its primary function is to provide two-way audio communication, allowing users to hear and respond to pages or intercom calls through a dedicated speaker. The V-762 is a passive device, meaning it does not require additional power beyond what is supplied by the connected talkback control unit.

Function Description:

The V-762 acts as an output and input device for a talkback system. When connected to a compatible Valcom handsfree talkback control unit, it allows users to hear incoming audio (pages or intercom calls) and provides a microphone for handsfree replies. The speaker's volume can be adjusted directly on the unit via a front-mounted knob, offering localized control over the listening level. This adjustment primarily affects the reply level when the page control is in the receive mode, ensuring that the user can comfortably hear incoming audio. However, it's important to note that the V-762's volume control will not increase the transmit or receive level beyond the settings established on the main page control unit, maintaining system-wide audio integrity.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Impedance: 45 Ohms. This impedance is specifically matched for optimal performance with Valcom handsfree talkback control units.
  • Power Requirement: No additional power required. The unit operates solely on the power provided by the connected talkback control unit.
  • Cable Type: Standard, twisted telephone cable is recommended for wiring connections.
  • Maximum Cable Run: Each cable run connecting the V-762 to its control unit should be limited to a maximum of 800 feet to ensure signal quality and proper operation.
  • Dimensions: 3.9 inches (H) x 5.1 inches (W) x 3.2 inches (D) (9.9 cm H x 12.9 cm W x 8.1 cm D). These compact dimensions make it suitable for desk placement or discreet wall mounting.
  • Weight: 0.7 lbs (0.32 kg). Its lightweight design further enhances its versatility for various mounting options.
  • Available Colors: The V-762 is available in three color options to blend with different environments: Black (Model V-762-BK), White (Model V-762-W), and Gray (Model V-762-GY).

Usage Features:

  • Volume Control: A prominent knob on the front of the housing allows for easy adjustment of the speaker's volume. This provides immediate control for the user to set their preferred listening level.
  • Mounting Flexibility: The V-762 is designed for both desk and wall mounting.
    • Desk Mounting: Four rubber feet are included to prevent the unit from sliding on a desk surface, ensuring stability during use.
    • Wall Mounting: Keyhole patterns are integrated into the inside rear surface of the enclosure for secure wall installation. For wall mounting, the front cover needs to be removed, the unit mounted, and then the front cover replaced. Specific drill bit sizes are recommended for installation: an 11/32" drill bit for the center hole and a 3/16" bit for the outer holes.
  • Rotatable Front Cover: The front cover of the unit can be rotated to match the desired positioning, offering aesthetic and functional flexibility regardless of whether it's desk or wall mounted.
  • Simple Wiring: Connections are made using standard twisted telephone cable, simplifying installation. The wiring diagram clearly indicates connections for "Tip - Green" and "Ring - Red" to the talkback control unit's T and R leads, respectively, along with connections for "Page Out" and "ON/OFF Volume Control."

Maintenance Features:

  • Field Repairability: Valcom equipment, including the V-762, is explicitly stated as not field repairable. This means that users or technicians should not attempt to open or repair the unit themselves.
  • Factory Service: Valcom, Inc. maintains dedicated service facilities in Roanoke, VA, for all necessary repairs.
  • Repair Procedure: If a V-762 unit requires repair, it should be sent to the Valcom, Inc. Repair and Return Dept. When sending a unit for service, it is crucial to attach a tag that clearly states the company name, address, phone number, contact person, and a detailed description of the problem.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: The manual provides a "Troubleshooting Chart" to assist users in diagnosing common issues before sending the unit for repair. This chart covers problems such as "No Sound," "Low Volume," and "Loud Squeal (feedback)," offering probable causes and corrective actions.
    • No Sound/Low Volume: Common solutions include checking if the volume control is turned up and using a lineman's test set to verify proper audio levels on the T & R leads and at the source.
    • Loud Squeal (feedback): Recommended actions include lowering the speaker volume, aiming the speaker in a different direction, moving the speaker further from the phone, or installing a confidencer on the phone in severe problem areas.
  • Technical Support: Valcom offers technical support via phone at (540) 563-2000 (press 1 for technical support) and through their website at http://www.valcom.com. When calling for support, it is advisable to have a Volt-Ohm meter and a lineman's test set available and to call from the job site for effective troubleshooting.
  • Warranty Information: Details regarding the product warranty can be found on the Valcom website at www.valcom.com/warranty.
