Why won't the pilot light stay lit on my Vermont Castings RHE32?

  To troubleshoot a pilot light that won't stay lit on your Vermont Castings Indoor Fireplace, first, check the pilot flame. It must impinge on the thermocouple/thermopile. Clean and/or adjust the pilot for maximum flame impingement on the thermopile and thermocouple. Also, the pilot generator (thermocouple) or remote wall switch might be defective. Alternatively, the automatic valve could be defective. Turn the valve knob to “Pilot”. Maintain flow to pilot; a milivolt meter should read greater than 10 mV. If the reading is okay and the pilot does not stay on, replace the gas valve. Note: An interrupter block (not supplied) must be used to conduct this test.

  If the spark ignitor on your Vermont Castings Indoor Fireplace won't light, first, try lighting the pilot with a match. If the pilot lights, turn it off and push the red button again. If the pilot still won't light, check the gap at the electrode and pilot; it should be 1/8" to have a strong spark. If there is still no spark to the pilot, and the electrode wire is properly connected, replace the ignitor.

  If your Vermont Castings Indoor Fireplace burner isn't getting gas, start by checking the wall switch and wires for proper connections. You can test the wall switch by using a jumper wire across the terminals at the wall switch. If the burner comes on, replace the defective wall switch. If it is still not working, try using jumper wires across the wall switch wires at the valve. If the burner then comes on, the wires are faulty or the connections are bad. Also, the thermopile may not be generating sufficient millivoltage. Ensure wire connections from the thermopile at gas valve terminals are tight and the thermopile is fully inserted into the pilot bracket. One of the wall switch wires may be grounded.
