Overview

The VIAIR 400H and 450H Hardmount Air Compressors are designed to be a vital air source for various applications, offering a compact and oil-less design that allows for versatile mounting options, including under the hood or inside a vehicle. These compressors are intended for use with 12-volt DC systems and are engineered to provide reliable air compression when properly installed and operated.

Function Description:

The primary function of these air compressors is to generate compressed atmospheric air for a range of uses, particularly tire inflation. They are equipped to deliver consistent air pressure, making them suitable for maintaining proper tire inflation, which is crucial for vehicle safety and performance. The compressors are designed to be hardmounted, meaning they are permanently installed in a vehicle rather than being portable units. This permanent installation ensures that compressed air is readily available whenever needed. The 400H and 450H models are built with a focus on durability and performance, featuring components that can withstand the demands of regular use. The inclusion of a 1.5-foot heavy-duty heat-resistant leader hose with 1/4-inch industrial series quick connect stud facilitates easy attachment of an air hose for inflation tasks. This leader hose is specifically designed to provide convenient access for air hose attachment and to extend the lifespan of the extension hose by minimizing wear on the compressor's air outlet. It is important not to remove this leader hose from the air compressor, as some models may have a built-in inline check valve that is integral to their operation. The compressors are designed to pump only atmospheric air, and users should never attempt to pump anything else.

Usage Features:

The VIAIR 400H and 450H compressors are designed with several features to enhance their usability and ensure safe operation.

  • Automatic Reset Thermal Protector: Both models are equipped with an automatic thermal overload protector. This crucial safety feature is designed to safeguard the compressor from overheating, which could otherwise lead to permanent damage. If the internal operating temperature of the compressor rises above safe levels due to excessive use, the thermal protector will automatically cut off power. The compressor will then automatically restart once the thermal protector resets after the internal temperature drops below safe levels. Users are advised not to attempt to restart the compressor manually if it shuts off; instead, they should turn the power switch to the OFF position and allow the compressor to cool for approximately 30 minutes before resuming use.
  • Mounting Versatility: The compact, oil-less design allows for mounting in various locations within a vehicle, such as under the hood or inside the cabin. When selecting a mounting location, it is essential to choose a flat and secure spot where the compressor can be mounted using the provided anti-vibration brackets. The location should also be as cool as possible and away from heat sources to prevent overheating. While the compressor is moisture and splash resistant, it is not waterproof, so it should not be mounted in areas where it is likely to come into contact with water.
  • Remote Inlet Air Filter: To ensure clean air intake and prolong the compressor's life, a remote inlet air filter is included. This filter should be installed in a dry location, away from water splashes, and its placement should be considered during the mounting process.
  • Electrical Connections: The compressor requires a 12-volt DC power source. Proper wiring involves connecting the positive wire to the positive post of the battery and the ground wire to the negative post of the battery or an appropriate chassis grounding point. It is recommended to locate the compressor as close to the battery as possible to maximize performance and minimize amp draw. For remote installations where the compressor is further from the battery, a longer minimum 8 AWG positive lead wire may be necessary. All connections should be made securely, and the vehicle's engine should be kept running while using the air compressor to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.
  • Tire Inflation: When using the compressor for tire inflation, it is crucial to use a heat-resistant extension hose with a minimum 200 PSI working pressure. The manual recommends using VIAIR's 25-foot extension coil hose with an in-line deflator and built-in pressure gauge (Part No. 00025). It is also important to use an open-ended tire chuck, especially when the compressor is in operation, to prevent excessive pressure buildup if the chuck is not attached to the tire valve stem. Always inflate tires to the manufacturer's recommended pressures and exercise extreme caution when driving with aired-down tires, re-inflating them before high-speed road travel.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are strongly advised to wear safety glasses or goggles when operating the product. The compressor and its fittings can become very hot during and immediately after use, so direct contact with bare hands should be avoided. If handling fittings or the leader hose is necessary, heat-resistant gloves should be worn. The compressor should only be operated in well-ventilated areas, and children should never be allowed to operate it without close supervision. It should not be used near flames, explosive materials, or where aerosol products or oxygen are being administered.

Maintenance Features:

To ensure a long and trouble-free service life, regular maintenance of the VIAIR 400H and 450H compressors is essential.

  • Electrical and Fitting Connections: Periodically, all electrical and fitting connections should be checked, cleaned, and tightened or repaired as needed. This helps maintain optimal performance and prevents potential issues.
  • Mounting Bolts: All mounting bolts should be checked periodically and tightened as necessary to ensure the compressor remains securely in place.
  • Air Filter Element Replacement: The air filter element needs to be replaced periodically. The frequency of replacement depends on the operating frequency and the environment in which the compressor is used. For frequent use in dusty environments, it is recommended to replace the air filter element at least once a month to ensure clean air intake and protect the compressor's internal components.
  • Cleaning: Regularly clean dust and dirt from the compressor's cooling fins and motor housing. This helps maintain efficient cooling and prevents overheating, contributing to the compressor's longevity.
  • Lubrication: The compressor is equipped with a permanently lubricated, maintenance-free motor. Users should never attempt to lubricate the compressor themselves, as this could cause damage.
  • Repairs: All repairs should be performed exclusively by the manufacturer or the manufacturer's authorized service agencies. Attempting repairs independently can void the warranty and potentially cause further damage.

By adhering to these installation, usage, and maintenance guidelines, users can ensure the safe and efficient operation of their VIAIR 400H or 450H Hardmount Air Compressor, maximizing its lifespan and reliability as a vital air source.
