Overview

The Victaulic RG3400 is a hydraulic feed roll grooving tool designed for grooving pipe and tubing to receive Victaulic grooved pipe products. This tool is suitable for various materials and sizes, making it a versatile option for pipe preparation.

Function Description:

The primary function of the RG3400 is to create roll grooves on the ends of pipes and tubing. This process involves using a hydraulic pump to bring an upper roll into contact with the pipe, which is supported by a lower roll. As the pipe rotates, the rolls form a groove of a specific profile and diameter, enabling the use of Victaulic grooved pipe couplings. The tool is designed for safe and dependable operation, with an emphasis on proper setup, adjustment, and maintenance to ensure accurate and consistent groove formation. It operates with a safety foot switch for operator control and safety.

Usage Features:

  • Roll Grooving Capabilities: The RG3400 can be equipped with various grooving rolls to accommodate different pipe/tubing materials and sizes. Roll sets are color-coded and marked with size and part number for easy identification.
  • Hydraulic Feed System: Features a hydraulic pump handle and valve for precise control over the grooving depth. The depth adjuster nut allows for fine-tuning the groove diameter, with each full rotation equaling a 0.20-inch (5.1-mm) change in diameter and each increment mark representing a 0.01-inch (0.25-mm) change.
  • Pipe Stabilizer: Includes a pipe stabilizer designed to prevent sway, especially for longer and larger diameter pipes, ensuring smooth rotation and consistent grooving. It should be adjusted to allow the pipe to rotate smoothly without skewing.
  • Foot Switch Operation: Operated with a safety foot switch, which must be easily accessible to the operator, ensuring safe control during the grooving process.
  • Pipe Length Handling: Capable of grooving short pipe lengths without a pipe stand, but requires one or more pipe stands for longer lengths (up to double-random lengths). Specific minimum and maximum pipe lengths are outlined for safe operation.
  • Groove Diameter Verification: The "C" groove diameter must be checked periodically using a Victaulic Go/No-Go Grooved Pipe Diameter Tape or a vernier caliper/narrow-land micrometer to ensure it conforms to Victaulic specifications.
  • Safety Features: Equipped with safety labels and requires operators to wear personal protective equipment (safety glasses, hardhat, foot protection, hearing protection). It emphasizes disconnecting power before adjustments, preventing accidental startups, and keeping hands away from moving parts.
  • Portability: Designed for repeated shipping in sturdy containers, and includes an eye bolt for lifting with an overhead crane (minimum capacity 500 pounds/227 kilograms) to transport the tool to its intended location.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Operation Adjustments: Requires verification of proper roll set installation, tightness of roll retaining bolts, and cleaning of pipe ends to remove foreign material and rust for optimal grooving performance and roll life.
  • Hydraulic System Maintenance: The hydraulic fluid level must be checked before operation and several times a year. It uses ISO Viscosity Grade 22 oil, and the level should not exceed the inlet hole when the pump valve is released. Instructions are provided for draining and filling the hydraulic system.
  • Lubrication: Upper roll bearings and main shaft bearings should be lubricated with No. 2EP lithium-based grease when rolls are changed and at the grease ports. The pipe stand's universal ball units require weekly lubrication with light machine oil.
  • Cleaning: The tool and roll sets should be kept clean, and the main shaft and lower roll bore should be cleaned before installing rolls. A thin film of oil or anti-seize lubricant on the main shaft can aid in future roll removal.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting section helps identify and resolve common issues such as pipe not staying in grooving rolls, pipe stopping rotation, loud noises during grooving, and the tool failing to groove pipe.
  • Parts Ordering Information: Provides clear instructions for ordering replacement parts, including required information such as tool model and serial number, item number, part number, description, and shipping details.
