Overview

This document is an owner's guide for VWR Basic Auto Defrost Freezers, specifically models SCBAF-1420 and SCBAF-2020. It provides instructions on operation, care, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance.

Function Description

The VWR Basic Auto Defrost Freezers are designed for indoor use, primarily in air-conditioned spaces with temperatures between 65°F and 85°F. These units are equipped with an auto-defrost feature that initiates a 30-minute defrost cycle every 12 hours to remove frost build-up. During this cycle, the compressor turns off, and defrost heaters activate in the evaporator section, causing a temporary rise in air temperature inside the unit, though this should not significantly affect product temperatures. The freezers are designed to maintain desired air and product temperatures, with controls preset and locked at the factory.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Source: The supply circuit must conform to all National and Local Electrical Codes. Voltage should not vary more than 5% from serial plate ratings. A separate circuit is recommended, protected by a 20 AMP DELAY-TYPE FUSE or CIRCUIT BREAKER.
  • Grounding: The unit requires proper grounding using the provided 3-prong plug into a 3-prong grounded outlet. Extension cords and adapter plugs are not to be used.
  • Airflow Space: A minimum of 4 inches of airflow space is required at the back and 3 inches on the sides and top of the unit. No material should be stored on top of the unit.
  • Temperature Control Settings: The electronic temperature control has settings from "1" (warmest) to "7" (coldest), with "0" indicating off. Factory settings are preset and locked.
  • Alarms:
    • Hi Temperature Alarm: Activates (red "Hi Temp" indicator and buzzer) if the internal temperature exceeds 23°F (-5°C) for at least one hour.
    • Door Ajar Alarm: Activates (beep every five seconds and "Door Ajar" indicator) if the door is open for more than five minutes. If the door remains open for 15 minutes or more, the interior lamp will turn off.
  • Loading Capacity: Maximum suggested load is about 75% of the chamber capacity, distributed evenly from top to bottom and side to side.
  • Warranty: Two-year parts and labor warranty, and a five-year compressor parts warranty. The warranty period begins two weeks from the date of shipment.

Usage Features

  • Uncrating and Installation: Before unpacking, move the refrigerator as close as possible to its final location. Remove wooden planks or skid.
  • Leveling: The unit can be leveled using screw-type adjustable leveling legs on the front corners. Turning counterclockwise raises the corner, and clockwise lowers it. A slight front-to-back tilt is acceptable and recommended.
  • First Startup: After leveling and plugging in, allow the cabinet to operate for a minimum of eight hours or until it starts cycling normally before loading products. This allows the system to cool down and stabilize.
  • Loading Products: Introduce products in stages, allowing several hours between stages for temperature stabilization if loading a large amount. Ensure 2-3 inches of free space along the back and sides for proper airflow. Minimize door opening time to prevent warm, moist air entry and condensation.
  • Temperature Control Adjustment: While factory settings are recommended, adjustments can be made using the UP (^) symbol for colder temperatures and DOWN (v) symbol for warmer temperatures. The control can be locked by pressing "Alarm Reset" for 3 seconds until "L" appears, and unlocked by pressing it again for 3 seconds until "U" appears. It is strongly recommended to contact technical support before making any adjustments.
  • Alarm Silencing: The "Alarm Reset" button can silence both the Hi Temperature Alarm and the Door Ajar Alarm.
  • Door Bins (if applicable): Use door bins for non-critical temperature storage, as items in these bins may not maintain the desired temperature band.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive guide is provided for common issues such as the unit not running, not maintaining proper temperature, running too long, warm external walls, compressor noises, moisture inside/outside, odor, and door not closing.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: Little maintenance is required, but periodic cleaning is recommended for efficiency.
    • Interior and Door Liners: Use 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. Wring out excess water from sponges/cloths before cleaning around controls, light bulbs, or electrical parts.
    • Door Gaskets: Wipe with soap and water and a clean soft cloth.
    • Shelves: Wash with soap and water. Do not wash removable shelves in a dishwasher.
    • Exterior and Handles: Use soap and water or a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Use a soft cloth for smooth handles. Do not use commercial household cleaners, ammonia, alcohol, or dry cloths on handles.
  • Moisture Management: During summer or in humid conditions, increased moisture/condensation is normal. Ensure the unit is in an air-conditioned, low-humidity space. Check the freezer's location, door sealing, and frequency of door openings. Verify the presence of a water trap (U-shaped loop) in the drain tube to prevent air entry into the chamber.
  • Service Calls: Before calling technical support, have the unit's model and serial number (found on the interior left upper wall) and a problem description ready.
