Questions and Answers

Overview

This document is an owner's guide for VWR Undercounter Built-In Plus Series Freezers, specifically models SCUCBI-0420, SCUCBI-0420SS, and SCUCBI-0420AD. It provides instructions for operation, care, and maintenance to ensure optimal performance.

Function Description

The VWR Undercounter Built-In Plus Series Freezers are designed to store temperature-sensitive products. They feature an electronic temperature control system that continuously monitors and regulates the internal temperature. When the temperature rises to a pre-set upper limit, the controller activates the compressor to cool the unit until a lower set point is reached. These freezers are intended for placement in enclosed spaces, with air exchange occurring through a bottom front grill.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 20073, Rev 0
  • Models Covered: SCUCBI-0420, SCUCBI-0420SS, SCUCBI-0420AD
  • Power Source: 110-120V 60Hz. A separate circuit is recommended, protected by a 20 AMP delay-type fuse or circuit breaker. Voltage should not vary more than 5% from serial plate ratings.
  • Temperature Control: Digital microprocessor-based electronic temperature control, indication, and alarm system.
  • Compressor Warranty: Two-year parts and labor, with an additional three years for compressor parts (totaling five years for compressor parts).
  • Operating Temperature Range: Designed to maintain specific air and product temperatures. Room temperature should ideally be between 65°F and 85°F for optimal performance. The unit will display "HH" if ambient temperature is above 40C/104F and "LL" if below -40C/-40F, indicating immediate cessation of use.
  • Loading Capacity: Maximum suggested load is about 75% of the chamber volume, distributed evenly.
  • Airflow: Requires at least 4 inches of clearance around the evaporator fan(s) (if installed) for proper air circulation.
  • Grounding: Requires a 3-prong grounded outlet; extension cords and adapter plugs are not to be used. The grounding prong must not be removed or bypassed.

Usage Features

  • Uncrating and Leveling: The unit should be moved as close to its final location as possible before unpacking. Leveling is achieved using screw-type adjustable legs on the front corners, with a slight front-to-back tilt being acceptable and recommended.
  • Initial Startup: After proper leveling, the unit should be plugged into an electrical outlet. Allow a minimum of four hours for the cabinet to operate and cycle normally before placing product inside. The motor compressor may start and stop several times initially, which is normal.
  • Electronic Temperature Control Display: Normally displays the current interior temperature in degrees Celsius (or Fahrenheit, adjustable).
  • Viewing Set Points: Pressing the SET button momentarily displays the compressor off set point.
  • Viewing Min/Max Temperatures: Pressing the up arrow displays the warmest temperature recorded, and the down arrow displays the coldest. These memories can be cleared by pressing the corresponding arrow button, then immediately pressing and holding SET until "rSt" is displayed.
  • Adjusting Temperature Set Points:
    • Compressor Off Set Point: Press and hold SET for 2 seconds. Use up/down keys to change the value, then press SET again to lock.
    • Compressor On Set Point (Hysteresis): Enter programming mode by pressing SET and DOWN keys for 3 seconds ("Hy" will display). Press SET again to view current value. Use up/down keys to adjust the differential (number of degrees the temperature can drift up before the compressor restarts). Press SET again to lock, then SET and UP to return to Operating Mode.
  • Changing Temperature Scale (Celsius/Fahrenheit): Enter programming mode (SET and DOWN for 3 seconds). Cycle through parameters with up/down keys until "CF" is displayed. Press SET, use up/down keys to select C or F, press SET to lock, then SET and UP to return to Operating Mode.
  • Adjusting High/Low Alarm Set Points: Enter programming mode (SET and DOWN for 3 seconds). Cycle through parameters until "ALU" (Alarm Upper) or "ALL" (Alarm Lower) is displayed. Press SET, use up/down keys to select the desired value, press SET to lock, then SET and UP to return to Operating Mode.
  • Control Lockout: Simultaneously pressing and holding the up and down arrows locks the control keys ("POF" displayed), preventing inadvertent changes. Only viewing set points and min/max temperatures is possible. To unlock, repeat the action ("Pon" displayed).
  • Alarm System: Features a red LED for visual indication and a beeper for audible alarms. A 5-minute delay is preprogrammed before an alarm condition is declared to prevent spurious alarms (e.g., from door openings).
  • Loading Practices: Introduce large amounts of product in stages, allowing temperature stabilization between stages. Avoid blocking evaporator fans (if installed) and do not overload the unit. Minimize door open time to reduce condensation and frost.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning:
    • Interior and Door Liners: Use 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. Wring excess water from sponge/cloth before cleaning around electrical parts.
    • Glass Doors: Clean with mild detergent and water on a soft cloth/sponge, rinse, and wipe dry.
    • Door Gaskets: Wipe with a clean soft cloth.
    • Shelves: Wash with soap and water. Do not wash in a dishwasher.
    • Exterior and Handles: Use soap and water or non-abrasive glass cleaner. Use a soft cloth for smooth handles. Do not use commercial household cleaners, ammonia, alcohol, or dry cloths on handles.
  • Stainless Steel Care:
    • Use non-abrasive tools (soft cloths, plastic scouring pads). If using stainless steel pads, scrub in the direction of polishing lines.
    • Use alkaline, alkaline chlorinated, or non-chloride containing cleaners. Avoid cleaners with high chloride content or quaternary salts.
    • Treat hard water to reduce deposits.
    • Clean frequently to prevent stain build-up.
    • Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry immediately after using chlorinated cleaners. Allow to air dry to maintain the passive film.
    • Never use hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid).
  • Defrosting:
    • Defrost when ¼ to ½ inch of frost accumulates or if proper temperature cannot be maintained.
    • Disconnect power before defrosting. Remove product and leave the door open.
    • Use a plastic scraper to remove soft frost. Never use metal instruments, damp cloths, or wet hands.
    • For hard frost, place deep pans of hot water inside the freezer with the door closed for about 15 minutes to soften. Repeat as necessary.
    • After defrosting, remove all towels/tools, clean the interior/exterior, and plug the unit back in.
  • Water Trap: Ensure there is a U-shaped loop (water trap) in the drain tube near the compressor to prevent air from entering the chamber.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common issues like the unit not running, not maintaining temperature, running too long, warm exterior walls, and compressor noises.
  • Technical Support: Contact Horizon Scientific's Technical Service Department for any adjustments or issues, providing the unit's model and serial number (located on the interior left or right upper wall).
