This document describes the VWR Top Loading Balances, a range of precision balances designed for accurate weighing in laboratory, industry, and university settings.
Function Description
The VWR Top Loading Balances are versatile instruments capable of performing various weighing functions. Their primary function is precise mass measurement, with capabilities extending to more specialized tasks. The balances feature a user-friendly interface with a clear LCD display and intuitive button controls for easy operation.
Key functions include:
- Weighing: Standard weighing operations, including simple weighing and tare function for subtracting container weight.
- Calibration: Both external and internal calibration options are available to ensure accuracy. Internal calibration (AUT-CAL, I-CAL, E-CAL, TEC-CAL) is a key feature, with specific procedures for locked and verified balances.
- Weight Units: The balances support multiple weight units, allowing users to select and switch between primary and secondary units of measurement (e.g., gram, milligram, carat, ounce, pound, pennyweight, ounce troy, grain, gram in, tael hon, tael sgp, tael roc, momme).
- PC Communication: Equipped with an RS232 interface, the balances can connect to a PC for data transmission and control, supporting various transmission formats for weight, density, piececounting, percentage, and animal weighing modes.
- Printer Serial Communication: The balances can also connect to a printer (e.g., TLP50 printer) for printing weighing data, including date and time.
- Transmission Speed Selection: Users can select different baud rates (1200, 2400, 4800, 9600 baud) for serial communication.
- Autozero Function: This feature allows for automatic correction of a possible zero drift, with options for disabling, soft, medium, and heavy autozero.
- Filters Selection: Three filter settings (proportion of ingredients, stable conditions, unstable conditions) are available to adapt the balance to different environmental conditions.
- Stability Function: The stability symbol indicates when the weight is stable within a defined range, with settings for stable, not so stable, and unstable environments.
- Display Contrast Regulation: The display contrast can be adjusted across 15 different levels for optimal viewing angles.
- Display Backlight Setup: Three working modes for the display backlight are available: ON (always switched on), OFF (always switched off), and AUTO (automatically switched on during weighing operations).
- Auto Power-off Function: This function activates the automatic power-off of the balance after a defined balance idle-time, with settings for disabled, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, and 15 minutes.
- Selection of Working Mode with Tablet: For specific models (RL 3.xx and R 3.xx), the balance can be operated with a tablet via a serial output connection.
- Piececounting Function: This function allows for counting pieces based on a sample weight, with options for sample sizes (10, 25, 50, 100). It includes visualization of total and unit weight, manual insertion of unit average weight, and automatic update of unit weight.
- Density Determination: The balances can determine the density of solids and liquids, requiring specific accessories (under-balance hook or hydrostatic kit) for certain models.
- Maximum Load Determination: This function allows reading the 100% percentage value (factory setting) and determining the maximum load.
- Percentage Weighing: This function measures weight as a percentage of a reference weight, with modes for weight reference and manual insertion of reference weight.
- Animal Weighing Function: This function acquires the averaged weight of moving objects or animals over a set time period (5 to 90 seconds).
- Totalizing Function: This function calculates the sum of consecutive weighings, up to a maximum number of 99.
- Threshold Function: This function allows users to define upper and lower weight thresholds, triggering an acoustic alarm if the weight falls outside these limits.

Usage Features
The VWR Top Loading Balances are designed for ease of use and flexibility in various applications.
- Installation: The manual provides detailed steps for installing the balance, including proper placement, leveling, and connecting to power. It emphasizes the importance of a stable environment, free from air flows, heavy thermal changes, and vibrations. The humidity rate of the balance environment must be between 45% and 75%.
- Weighing Pan Assembly: Clear diagrams illustrate how to assemble the weighing pan and windshield components.
- Keyboard and Display: The balances feature a clear LCD display with various indicators (stability, zero, tare, percentage weighing, piece counting, battery charge, insert data mode, upper/lower threshold, density measure mode) and control buttons (ESC, ON/OFF, PRINT, MENU, CAL, O/T).
- Stand By Mode: The balance can be set to stand-by mode to conserve power and quickly return to working conditions.
- Calibration Procedures: Comprehensive instructions are provided for both external and internal calibration, including visual cues on the display (e.g., "-CAL-", "LoAd") and button sequences.
- Tare Function: Simple steps for taring a container are outlined, allowing for net weight measurements.
- Manual Tare Function: For verified balances, a manual tare function is available, allowing users to input a specific tare value using the CAL and MENU buttons.

Maintenance Features
Proper maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and accuracy of the VWR Top Loading Balances.
- Cleaning: Regular cleaning is recommended. The balance should be unplugged from the power supply. A humid towel with soft detergent can be used. Avoid aggressive cleaning products, solvents, or similar. Liquids should not enter the instrument. Powder samples can be removed using a brush or vacuum cleaner.
- Safety Checks: Regular checks are advised to ensure the balance power supply is not damaged or working improperly. If the power supply is stored for long periods in harsh environments, it should be inspected.
- Assistance Service: In case of damage or malfunction, it is recommended to contact specialized staff or the reseller for assistance.
- Equipment Disposal: The equipment must be disposed of with unsorted waste and handled by an authorized facility for separate collection and recycling, in compliance with local laws and regulations.
- Warranty: VWR International warrants the product to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of two years from the date of delivery. The warranty covers repair or refund of the purchase price, provided the product has been damaged by accident, abuse, misuse, or misapplication, or from ordinary wear and tear.
- Storage: The recommended storage temperature is +5°C to +40°C, and storage humidity is 45% to 75%. The balance should be kept in its original packaging for transport. It should not be placed in extreme temperature and humidity conditions to avoid damage.
