Overview

The Weber Traveler Portable Griddle is a gas-powered outdoor cooking appliance designed for versatility and ease of use, offering a portable solution for griddle-style cooking. It is available in 17" and 22" models (GP17/GP17B and GP22/GP22B, respectively) and operates on LP (liquefied petroleum) gas.

Function Description:

The Weber Traveler Portable Griddle functions as an outdoor cooking appliance that uses LP gas to heat a flat griddle surface. It is designed for preparing a variety of foods such as eggs, pancakes, burgers, and fajitas. The griddle features an ignition system for easy startup and burner control knobs to adjust the heat for different cooking needs (OFF, START/HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW). The 22-inch models are equipped with two independent burner tubes, allowing for separate heat control and ignition for each. A protective hard cover is included, which should be open during ignition and cooking, and is intended for storage only to protect the griddle surface. The appliance is explicitly designed for outdoor use in well-ventilated areas and is not suitable for installation in or on recreational vehicles or boats, or in enclosed spaces like garages or tents.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: LP (Liquefied Petroleum) gas.
  • Cylinder Compatibility: Disposable LP cylinders with a capacity of 16.4 oz./465 g (1.02 lbs) equipped with a CGA #600 connection, marked "propane" only.
  • Regulator: Equipped with a pressure regulator set for 11 inches of water column pressure. The supplied regulator must be used.
  • Operating Temperature: Minimum ambient operating temperature for safe use is 0° F (-17° C).
  • Safety Clearances:
    • Must not be used within 24 inches (61 cm) of combustible materials (top, bottom, back, sides).
    • Must not be used within 25 ft (7.5 m) of any flammable liquid.
    • Must not be operated within 24 inches (61 cm) of any structure, combustible material, or other gas cylinder.
  • Electrical Requirements: If an external electrical source (e.g., for a rotisserie) is used, it must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes or national electrical codes (ANSI/NFPA 70 or CSA C22.1).
  • Warranty:
    • Cookbox: 5 years (no rust through/burn through; 2 years paint excluding fading or discoloration).
    • Hard cover assembly: 5 years (no rust through/burn through; 2 years paint excluding fading or discoloration).
    • Stainless steel burner tubes: 5 years (no rust through/burn through).
    • Griddle: 5 years (excluding rust).
    • All remaining parts: 2 years (excluding normal wear and tear).
    • The gas hose assembly is recommended to be replaced every five years, or sooner if local requirements dictate.

Usage Features:

  • Portability: Designed as a portable griddle, making it suitable for travel and various outdoor settings.
  • Ignition System: Features an igniter button for easy, spark-based ignition of the burners. For 22-inch models, each burner ignites independently.
  • Burner Control: Individual burner control knobs allow for precise temperature adjustment across the griddle surface.
  • Seasoning: Requires an initial seasoning process (at least 3 times before first use) to create a stick-resistant, protective cooking surface. This involves applying a neutral cooking oil and heating the griddle until it smokes and darkens.
  • Leveling: Adjustable feet allow the user to level the grill on uneven surfaces, ensuring stable operation.
  • Gas Leak Check: A critical pre-operation procedure involving a soap and water solution to detect gas leaks at connections.
  • Match Lighting: Instructions are provided for manually lighting the burners with a match if the ignition system fails, which also helps diagnose gas flow issues.
  • Safety Warnings: Comprehensive warnings cover gas leaks, flammable materials, unattended operation, hot surfaces, alcohol/drug impairment, and proper cylinder handling and storage.

Maintenance Features:

  • Meal-to-Meal Maintenance: Simple steps to be performed before each cook, including checking for grease buildup and inspecting the hose.
  • Grease Management System: Features a slide-out grease tray and a disposable catch pan to collect grease and food debris, which should be cleaned before each use to prevent grease fires.
  • Griddle Cleaning: The griddle surface should be cleaned after each use using a metal scraper or spatula to remove excess grease and food debris, followed by wiping with paper towels and applying a small amount of neutral cooking oil. Stubborn debris can be removed with a small amount of room temperature water.
  • Burner Cleaning: Regular cleaning of burner ports (small openings along the burner length) and spider/insect screens (on the front ends of the burners) is essential for optimum performance and safe operation. A stainless steel bristle grill brush is recommended for cleaning burner exteriors.
  • Surface Cleaning:
    • Painted, porcelain-enameled, and plastic components: Clean with warm soapy water and paper towels or cloth.
    • Stainless steel surfaces: Clean with a non-toxic, non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner or polish and a microfiber cloth, cleaning in the direction of the grain. Abrasive pastes or cleaners containing acid, mineral spirits, xylene, or oven cleaner should be avoided.
  • Environmental Cleaning: For grills in harsh environments (e.g., coastal areas, near pools), regular washing and rinsing of exterior surfaces with warm soapy water, followed by thorough drying, and weekly application of a stainless steel cleaner is recommended to prevent surface rust.
  • Storage: Instructions for disconnecting and storing LP cylinders (outdoors, out of reach of children, not in enclosed spaces) and for checking the grill for leaks and obstructions after periods of storage. The grill itself can be stored indoors only if the LP tank is disconnected and removed.
