Overview

This document is the LP Owner's Manual for the Weber SLATE 30"/36" Griddle, models GP30, GPD30, GPD30B, GPB30, and GPD36. It provides comprehensive information on the griddle's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The Weber SLATE griddle is an outdoor cooking appliance designed for use with liquid propane (LP) gas. It features multiple burners and a griddle cooking surface, allowing for various cooking methods. The griddle utilizes a snap ignition system for easy burner lighting. It is intended for private single-family home or apartment use and is not suitable for commercial, communal, or multi-unit settings. The griddle is designed for outdoor use only, in a well-ventilated area, and must not be used in enclosed spaces or beneath overhead combustible construction.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Liquid Propane (LP) gas.
  • LP Tank Requirements: Approximately 18½ inches (46.35 cm) high and 12½ inches (31.1 cm) in diameter, with a marked 20-pound (9.07 kg) LPG capacity or 47.6-pound (21.6 kg) water capacity. Tanks must be constructed and marked in accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) specifications or Canadian Standard CAN/CSA-B339. They must be provided with a listed OPD (Overfilling Prevention Device) and a Type 1 (CGA 791) tank connection. The tank must include a collar to protect the tank valve and have a D.O.T. certification and a testing date within five years of current use.
  • Minimum Ambient Operating Temperature: 0° F (-17° C) for safe use.
  • Electrical Grounding: If an external electrical source is utilized (e.g., rotisserie), it must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes or, in their absence, with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, or the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1, CSA C22.1.
  • Burner Flame Pattern: Correctly set for air and gas mixture, with flame tips occasionally flickering yellow, descending to light blue, and then dark blue.
  • Digital Temperature Display (Select Models): Displays the griddle's surface temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

Usage Features:

  • Snap Ignition System: Each control knob features a snap igniter that creates a spark to light its corresponding burner. Burners are ignited individually, starting from left to right.
  • Burner Control Knobs: Allow for precise control over the flame intensity with settings for OFF, START/HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW.
  • Protective Hard Cover: Designed for storage purposes to protect the griddle surface. It must be open during operation.
  • LP Tank Scale (Select Models): Indicates the amount of fuel remaining in a standard 20-pound LP tank.
  • Preheating: Essential for successful cooking, preventing food from sticking, and ensuring proper cooking temperature. Preheating for 10 minutes is recommended, with specific temperature targets (LOW for pancakes, HIGH for smash burgers).
  • Match Lighting: Instructions are provided for manually lighting burners with a match in case of electronic ignition failure. A matchstick holder is included with select models.
  • Gas Flow Control: The regulator includes a flow-limiting device that activates if the LP tank is turned on too quickly or if burner control knobs are not in the OFF position before turning on the tank.

Maintenance Features:

  • Leak Checking: A critical safety procedure to be performed after LP tank installation and annually. It involves applying a soap and water solution to fittings to detect gas leaks.
  • Griddle Cleaning: The griddle surface should be cleaned after each use. This involves scraping excess grease and food debris into the hole, wiping the surface with paper towels, and applying a small amount of neutral cooking oil. Stubborn debris can be removed with a small amount of room temperature water.
  • Burner Cleaning: The burner ports and spider/insect screens need regular cleaning to ensure optimum performance and safe operation. This involves removing the griddle and, for spider screens, the control panel. A stainless steel bristle grill brush is recommended for cleaning the burner exteriors.
  • Grease Management System: The griddle is equipped with a system that collects grease and food debris into a disposable drip pan, which should be checked and replaced regularly to prevent grease fires.
  • Grill Frame Cleaning: Stainless steel surfaces should be cleaned with non-toxic, non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Painted, porcelain-enameled, and plastic components should be cleaned with warm soapy water and paper towels or cloth.
  • Hose Assembly Replacement: It is recommended to replace the gas hose assembly every five years, or sooner if required by local regulations.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common issues such as main burners not igniting, including steps to check for gas flow and ignition system problems.
  • Replacement Parts: Information on how to obtain replacement parts through local retailers or weber.com.
