  Several factors can cause this. First, ensure that no birds or animals have nested in the duct. The distance between the cooktop and the bottom of the hood should be between 458 mm (18 in) and 710 mm (28 in). Ductwork should follow all requirements, using round metal duct work with a uniform diameter of 177 mm (7 in), and not exceed 35 ft (10.7 m). Reduce duct length and elbows if needed, and seal all joints properly. Also, make sure the duct doesn't open against the wind. For heavy cooking, use high speed and close nearby windows to prevent air gusts. Opening a window on the opposite side of the house can also improve performance.
