Overview

The WFCO EM-15 / EM-20 is a cost-efficient energy management switch designed for recreational vehicles (RVs) to share power from a single 15A or 20A branch circuit between two mid-to-large loads. This device prevents circuit breakers from tripping by intelligently managing power distribution to appliances such as microwaves, fireplaces, hairdryers, water heaters, or even two air conditioners. The EM-20 model is particularly useful for RVs with 30A AC service that have two air conditioners.

Function Description:

The EM-15 / EM-20 applies power to both connected loads until the total loaded current exceeds a preset threshold (approximately 13.5A for EM-15 and 18A for EM-20). When this threshold is exceeded, the device automatically cuts power to the secondary load while maintaining power to the primary load. Power to the secondary load is restored when the total loaded current drops below a lower preset level (approximately 5A). The default primary (priority) branch is Circuit A, with the secondary load wired to Circuit B.

EM-15 Specifics:

The EM-15 operates in a single "Power Relay Mode." After a short delay of approximately 4 seconds upon power application, both primary and secondary circuits receive power. It continuously monitors current and shuts down the secondary circuit if levels reach approximately 13.5A. Power returns to the secondary circuit once current drops below 5A.

EM-20 Specifics:

The EM-20 offers four basic modes of operation, selectable via an internal red & white switch:

  1. Power Relay Mode w/ Short Delay: Used for two appliances without compressors sharing a circuit breaker (e.g., microwave and fireplace). After a 4-second delay, both circuits receive power. The secondary circuit is shut down if current reaches 18A and restored when it drops below 5A.
  2. Power Relay Mode w/ Long Delay: Used for two loads with compressors that are not designed to use logic relays. After a 3-minute delay, both circuits receive power. The secondary circuit is shut down if current reaches 18A, triggering a 3-minute "OFF time delay timer." Power is restored after the timer expires and current drops below 5A, preventing "short cycling" of compressors.
  3. Logic Relay Mode w/ Short Delay: Used for two air conditioners on a 20A breaker that are equipped with energy management system inputs and use logic relays for compressor control. This mode should only be selected if the air conditioner control circuitry provides its own off-time delay to prevent short cycling. After a 4-second delay, both power relays remain ON. Control is performed through logic relays, which energize the secondary logic relay when current reaches 18A and de-energize it when current drops below 5A.
  4. Logic Relay Mode w/ Long Delay: Used for two air conditioners on a 20A breaker with energy management logic capabilities, where the air conditioner control circuitry does not provide the necessary off-time delay. After a 4-second delay, both primary and secondary circuits receive power, triggering a 3-minute "OFF time delay timer." Both power relays remain ON. The EM-20 monitors current, energizing the secondary logic relay when levels reach 18A. After the "OFF time delay timer" expires and current drops below 5A, the secondary logic relay is de-energized.

Logic Relay Operation Detail (EM-20):

The EM-20 logic relays provide dry relay contacts (simple low current switch closure). In normal operation with both circuits ON, the logic relays are de-energized (common connected to normally closed contacts). When total current exceeds the upper trip limit, the logic relay for the secondary channel is energized (common connected to normally open contacts).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Weight: 0.55 kgs / 1.21 lbs
  • AC Connections: 9P terminal block for 12 AWG / 14 AWG wire; Suggested 7 in-lb torque. Use 12AWG copper conductors for 20A applications and 14AWG for 15A applications.
  • Safety: CETL / UL 916 + CSA C22.2 NO. 205
  • FCC Compliance: Class B digital device, designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference.

Usage Features:

  • Flexible Mounting Options: The EM-15 / EM-20 offers three mounting configurations:
    1. Wall/Floor Mounting.
    2. Directly to the back of WFCO WF-89xxPEC Power Centers.
    3. Directly to the back of WFCO WF-85xx Power Centers (no bracket needed, uses existing screw holes).
  • EM-20 Remote Control: An optional remote control (12 ft long wire and RJ11 connector) allows users to manually set circuit priority. LEDs indicate which circuit is currently designated as primary. Pressing the button changes the preference, with the LED updating immediately and the relay activation occurring after a short delay (approx. 4 seconds). If no remote is installed, Circuit A is always the primary.
  • Circuit Priority: Users can choose which circuit (A or B) remains ON in an over-current situation. The other circuit will be shut OFF.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Chart: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting chart to diagnose common issues such as no power on circuits, power on only one circuit, both circuits on simultaneously, or remote control malfunctions.
  • Self-Diagnosis: The device's modes and delays are designed to prevent damage to connected appliances, particularly compressors, by managing power intelligently.
  • Qualified Personnel Installation: Installation should be performed by an experienced technician, and all wiring must conform to local, national, and regional regulations, using copper conductors only.
  • Safety Warnings: Emphasizes disconnecting all power supplies before making electrical connections to prevent shock, and warns against installation in compartments with batteries or flammable materials due to arc/spark potential.
