Function Description:
The Whale Expanse Water Heater provides on-demand hot water and space heating. It operates using a combination of gas and electric power, offering flexibility in different environments. The system is designed to be controlled via either a Whale iVan® Control Panel or a Whale® Duo Control Panel, both of which have been updated to reflect the new LIN controlled system. The primary function is to heat water for domestic use and to circulate warm air for room heating, ensuring comfort for occupants.

The system includes various models tailored for different installations and control preferences:
- IW8212Ux: Underfloor gas and electric Water Heater with Whale iVan® Control Panel.

The "x" in the model numbers denotes packaging/shipping variations.
The control panels feature distinct icons to signify the LIN controlled system, differentiating them from older models. For water heating, the target temperature is 62°C, and for room heating, it's 18°C.
The electrical connections for the Duo Control and iVan Control Panels are detailed, including pin assignments for power supply (12V d.c.), ground (0V d.c.), LIN communication, and pump control. The system incorporates an RJ12 cable port for connection to the Water Heater and Room Heater.
Usage Features:
- Control Panel Integration: The Expanse Water Heater integrates with either the Whale iVan® Control Panel or the Whale® Duo Control Panel. These panels allow users to set desired temperatures for both water and room heating.
- LIN Controlled System: The adoption of the LIN protocol enhances communication between the heater and other Whale heating products, such as the Heat Air Room Heater, for a more integrated and efficient system.
- Fault Indication and Clear Lockout Procedure: The control panels provide clear fault indications, such as "Check gas supply," "Gas overheat fault," "Electric overheat fault," "Check voltage supply," "Air pressure fault," "Internal faults," "Flame simulation," "Relay sense," and "Start-up" issues. For iVan Control Panels, a specific lockout procedure involves turning the Master Switch "off," pressing the White Reset Button on the Expanse Water Heater, and then pressing OK on the iVan® Control Panel. The pop-up screen on the iVan identifies the fault, and users must clear the fault code by following instructions on the screen and pressing OK.
- Reset Buttons: Both the Duo Control and iVan Control Panels feature reset buttons. For the Duo Control, all lockouts are cleared by turning the Master Switch "off" and then "on," with no accompanying reset button. For the iVan Control Panel, a hard reset is carried out by pressing the respective reset button on the Expanse Water Heater.
- Connectivity: The system utilizes RJ12 cables for connecting the Water Heater and Room Heater to the control panels, ensuring reliable communication.
Maintenance Features:
- Fault Diagnosis: The manual provides a comprehensive fault table, detailing potential faults, their iVan display messages, and corresponding actions. This allows users or service engineers to quickly diagnose and address issues.
- Check gas supply (1): Ensures there is no blockage in the gas line and that temperatures are below 5°C. If not, propane gas rather than butane should be used.
- Gas overheat fault (2) OR Electric overheat fault (3): Indicates the Expanse Water Heater is completely full of water. Users are advised to run the pump with one hot tap open until water flows smoothly, then wait at least 10 minutes to cool the heater.
- Check voltage supply (4): Minimum operating voltage is 10.5V d.c., maximum is 15.9V d.c. Checks connections between the Expanse Water Heater and the battery are recommended.
- Air pressure fault (5): Indicates the heater is not getting enough air through the flues. Users should check the flue ends for obstructions.
- Internal faults, Flame simulation, Relay sense, Start-up (6, 7, 8, 9): An internal fault has occurred. Clear lockout by turning the Master Switch "off" then "on," pressing the White Reset Button on the Expanse Water Heater, then pressing OK on the iVan® Control Panel.
- Fault on Expanse Water Heater (15): Two faults occurred at the same time or at least five or more lockout clearing attempts have been unsuccessful. Clear lockout by turning the Master Switch "off" then "on," pressing the White Reset Button on the Expanse Water Heater, then pressing OK on the iVan® Control Panel.
