Do you have a question about the Xylem rule Tournament 401C and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Rule Tournament Series Livewell/Baitwell Pumps are powerful and long-lasting cartridge pumps designed for marine applications. They offer outstanding performance and versatility, primarily through their replaceable motor cartridge feature. This design allows for easy replacement of the motor if it expires, without needing to remove the entire pump assembly, thus keeping the fitting and hose intact. The cartridge system also provides complete access to the impeller, simplifying cleaning and maintenance tasks.

Key Features and Specifications:

The pumps are available in several models, categorized by their GPH (gallons per hour) output and pickup tube configuration:

  • Angled Pickup Tube Models:

    • 401C: 500 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 3A fuse. Delivers 500 GPH at open flow and 340 GPH at 3.35 ft.
    • 403C: 800 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 5A fuse. Delivers 800 GPH at open flow and 490 GPH at 3.35 ft.
    • 405C: 1000 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 6A fuse. Delivers 1000 GPH at open flow and 710 GPH at 3.35 ft.
  • Straight Pickup Tube Models:

    • 401STC: 500 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 3A fuse. Delivers 500 GPH at open flow and 340 GPH at 3.35 ft.
    • 403STC: 800 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 5A fuse. Delivers 800 GPH at open flow and 490 GPH at 3.35 ft.
    • 405STC: 1100 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 6A fuse. Delivers 1100 GPH at open flow and 790 GPH at 3.35 ft.
  • 1" Straight Pickup Tube Models (FC Series):

    • 401FC: 500 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 3A fuse. Delivers 500 GPH at open flow and 340 GPH at 3.35 ft.
    • 403FC: 800 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 5A fuse. Delivers 800 GPH at open flow and 490 GPH at 3.35 ft.
    • 405FC: 1100 GPH Livewell Pump. Requires a 6A fuse. Delivers 1100 GPH at open flow and 790 GPH at 3.35 ft.

Replacement Motors:

The manual also lists replacement motors compatible with these pumps:

  • 45DR: 500 GPH Replacement Motor. Requires a 3A fuse.
  • 46DR: 800 GPH Replacement Motor. Requires a 5A fuse.
  • 47DR: 1000 GPH Replacement Motor. Requires a 6A fuse.

Dimensions (inches/mm):

The pumps have varying dimensions depending on the model series. For example, models 401C, 403C, and 405C have an 'A' dimension of 4.0 (102), while STC and FC models have an 'A' dimension of 4.33 (110). The 'B' dimension (height) is generally 5.87 (149) or 5.84 (148). Common thread sizes include 3/4-14NPSM, 1-11.5NPSM for 'C' (pickup tube), 1/2-14NPT for 'D' (discharge), and 3/4-14NPSM or 3/4-14NPT for 'E' (secondary port). All models share a common width of 2.76 (70).

Usage Features:

  • Motor Cartridge Replacement: To change the motor cartridge, first block off the thru-hull and turn off power. Disconnect wiring, press the cartridge button, twist counterclockwise, and pull the cartridge straight up. Reconnect the wire to the new cartridge, align arrows, press down firmly, and twist clockwise until a "click" is heard, indicating it's locked.
  • Mounting (C and STC Models): Requires drilling a 1" diameter hole through the transom or hull bottom, ensuring the internal hole is below the waterline when the boat is still. The pump is placed with a gasket, and a nut is tightened from the outside, taking care not to overtighten. The discharge outlet should be parallel with the boat bottom to prevent airlocks. Excess pickup tube length is trimmed flush with the nut, or 1/2" beyond if using a strainer (Rule Model 73). The discharge nozzle can be rotated 360° by lifting the locking ring.
  • Mounting (FC Models - Seacock Applications): Also requires a 1" diameter hole, ensuring the internal hole is below the waterline. A thru-hull pickup tube with a filter grate is installed to prevent debris. Marine sealant is used on the thru-hull's flat surface and around the threaded tube. Pipe tape or sealant is used on all threaded connections. The pump screws into the seacock hand-tight (do not overtighten). If mounted horizontally, the output must point upward for air venting.
  • Hose Connection (Dual Port Option): Each pump includes an additional 1/2" NPT female port and a hex plug, allowing for the addition of a washdown pump without needing another thru-hull fitting. Marine ribbed hose, rated for below-waterline use, should be used. The hose should run uphill evenly from the pump to the livewell tank, and a control valve can be used to regulate flow. Hose clamps are required for connections.

Electrical Specifications:

  • Wire: Normal installations require 16 gauge wire.
  • Polarity: Brown pump wire connects to the positive (+) side of the battery, and black pump wire connects to the negative (-) side.
  • Fuse: A properly sized fuse and holder must be installed in the positive (+) brown wire between the pump and the battery. Recommended fuse sizes are 3.0 AMP for 500 GPH pumps, 5.0 AMP for 800 GPH pumps, and 6.0 AMP for 1100 GPH pumps. All wire connections and joints should be kept above the highest possible water level and sealed with marine sealant to prevent corrosion.

Safety Warnings:

  • The motor cartridge must be fully locked in position at all times when the vessel is in the water to prevent water intrusion, flooding, property damage, severe personal injury, or death.
  • The pump is designed for water only. Using it with flammable, hazardous, caustic, or corrosive fluids can cause damage to the pump, surrounding environment, property damage, severe personal injury, or death.
  • High-speed water intake scoops can damage the pump and potentially flood the hull.
  • If the seacock is not closed when the livewell is not in use, water intrusion, flooding, property damage, severe personal injury, or death may occur.
  • The pump is below the waterline; water can enter the boat if the hose is not connected tightly to the pump.

Maintenance Features:

  • The cartridge design provides complete access to the impeller for easy cleaning and maintenance.
  • The ability to replace only the motor cartridge simplifies repairs and extends the life of the overall pump assembly.

The Rule Tournament Series pumps are designed for reliability and ease of service, making them a practical choice for marine livewell and baitwell applications.
