Outboard Rigging Guide - 2001 Tachometer
Calibration For Number Of Poles
The tachometer indicates the engine speed by
receiving the pulses from the lighting coil. The
flywheel magnetos used in Yamaha outboards
vary in number of poles used: 4-pole, 6-pole, and
12-pole. It is necessary to change the calibration
switch(es) on the back of the meter to correspond
to the particular motor being used.
To calibrate the tachometer for the motor being
used, remove the rubber grommet from the back
of the meter and set the calibration switch(es).
The analog tachometer has a rotating switch that
can be turned with a slotted-head screwdriver as
illustrated. The digital meter uses toggle dip-
switches. After setting the tachometer to the prop-
er pole value, reinstall the grommet. The pole set-
tings for each engine is given on the chart at the
beginning of the Tachometer section.
