Overview

This document serves as the owner's manual for the Yamaha DSR series powered speakers, including models DSR112, DSR115, DSR215, and the DSR118W powered subwoofer. It provides essential information for safe and optimal use, setup, and maintenance of these professional audio devices.

The DSR series powered speakers are designed to deliver high-resolution sound through advanced internal DSP (Digital Signal Processor) functionality, optimized for each specific model. A key feature is the FIR-X tuning™ technology, which utilizes linear phase FIR filters to achieve natural sound quality and a smooth frequency response, effectively eliminating phase cancellation around the crossover point. This results in a clearer and more coherent audio output.

Another notable feature is D-CONTOUR (Dynamic CONTOUR), a newly developed three-band multiband compressor. This intelligent system dynamically adjusts the level of each frequency range based on the speaker output volume. When the volume is low, it boosts high and low frequencies, and as the volume increases, it reduces the amount of boost. This ensures powerful sound tailored to human hearing, making it particularly useful for genres like dance music where emphasizing rhythm is desired.

The DSR series speakers are built with light and compact designs, incorporating class-D amplifiers, switching power supplies with PFC (Power Factor Correction), and lightweight yet powerful neodymium magnets (in DSR112 and DSR115 models). This combination contributes to their portability and ease of deployment without compromising on performance.

For enhanced reliability and extended equipment life, the speakers are equipped with powerful protection functions. These include separate advanced protection circuits for the speaker unit, amplifier unit, and power supply unit, safeguarding against various potential issues.

Controls and Functions:

The rear panel of the DSR series speakers features several controls and indicators for managing input, output, and protection.

  • INPUT jacks (1): These are balanced XLR and phone input jacks. The DSR118W subwoofer exclusively uses XLR jacks (L, R). Users can connect either XLR or phone jacks, but not both simultaneously.
  • THRU jack(s) (2): These balanced XLR output jacks pass input signals through unaffected, connected in parallel to the INPUT jacks, allowing for signal daisy-chaining to other speakers.
  • PEAK Indicator (3): This red indicator lights up when the input level reaches 3dB below clipping. If it lights frequently, users should adjust the input source volume to ensure the indicator flashes only briefly on the highest input levels.
  • LEVEL Control (4): This knob adjusts the overall output level of the speaker. For devices with a specified output level of +4dBu (like a mixer), the MIC/LINE switch should be set to LINE, and the LEVEL control set to approximately 12:00 for sufficient output.
  • MIC/LINE switch (5) (DSR112/DSR115/DSR215): This switch selects between MIC and LINE input levels. For low-level signals (e.g., microphones), set it to MIC (-). For high-level signals (e.g., electronic musical instruments), set it to LINE (L).
  • POLARITY switch (6) (DSR118W): This switch selects the subwoofer polarity (NORMAL or INVERTED). While NORMAL (1) is the default, INVERTED (-) may improve low-range response depending on the speaker system type and location. Users are encouraged to try both settings to find the best low-end sound.
  • LIMIT indicator (7): This indicator lights when the output limiter is active, attenuating output signals to the amplifier. It activates if the amplifier's output voltage exceeds the maximum value, if excessive integral power consumption is detected, or if the amplifier overheats. For DSR112/DSR115/DSR215, it lights when attenuation is 3dB or higher due to excessive output voltage or integral power consumption.
  • PROTECTION indicator (8): This indicator lights when the protection system is active. It engages if amplifier overheating or DC output is detected (muting speaker output and shutting down the power supply), or if overcurrent is detected (muting speaker output). It also lights for about two seconds during power-on as the power supply starts normally, and during power-off or unexpected errors to prevent noise. If the protection system engages, waiting for the amplifier to cool down or cycling power may restore normal operation. If not, contact a Yamaha dealer.
  • POWER indicator (9): Lights when the power switch (14) is set to on.
  • FRONT LED DISABLE switch (10): Toggles the LED on the front grill. Set to off (L) to light the LED, or on () to turn it off. For DSR112/DSR115/DSR215, the LED lights brighter than usual (6dB or higher attenuation) when the limiter operates.
  • HPF switch (11) (DSR112/DSR115/DSR215): Toggles the high-pass filter on or off. When on (), it cuts frequencies below 120Hz. This is recommended when connecting directly to a microphone or using the speaker with a subwoofer.
  • D-CONTOUR switch (12) (DSR112/DSR115/DSR215): Toggles the D-CONTOUR (Dynamic CONTOUR) feature on or off. When on (), it emphasizes rhythm sounds, particularly useful for dance music.
  • AC IN socket (13): Connects the supplied AC power cord. The power cord features a special V-LOCK latching mechanism to prevent accidental disconnection.
  • Power switch (14): Turns the power supply on (1) or off (○). Rapidly cycling power can cause malfunctions, so wait about 5 seconds after turning off before turning it on again.

Maintenance Features:

  • Power supply/Power cord: Always use the specified voltage and the included power cord. Protect the cord from damage, heat sources, and ensure proper grounding to prevent electrical shock. Disconnect the plug by holding the plug itself, not the cord, when removing it.
  • Do not open: The device contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to disassemble or modify it. Refer servicing to qualified Yamaha service personnel if it malfunctions.
  • Water warning: Avoid exposing the device to rain, water, or damp conditions. Do not place liquid containers on it. If liquid enters the device, immediately turn off power and unplug it, then have it inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. Never handle electric plugs with wet hands.
  • Abnormality detection: If the power cord or plug is damaged, sound is lost, or unusual smells/smoke appear, immediately turn off the power, unplug the device, and have it inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. The same applies if the device is dropped or damaged.
  • Location: When using the pole socket on the DSR118W for mounting DSR112 or DSR115, use a pole no longer than 90cm (35-7/16") with an outer diameter of 35mm (1-3/8"). Using other sizes may cause the device to fall and incur damage. Consult qualified Yamaha service personnel for installation requiring construction work, ensuring mounting hardware and location can support the device's weight. Avoid constant vibration and ensure adequate ventilation (at least 30cm clearance on sides, back, and top) to prevent overheating. Do not press the rear panel against a wall.
  • Handling caution: Always turn on the DSR series LAST in your audio system and turn it off FIRST to prevent speaker damage. Allow condensation to dry out for several hours before use if the device has been exposed to rapid temperature changes. Avoid inserting foreign objects into openings. Do not operate at high or uncomfortable volume levels for extended periods to prevent hearing loss. Discontinue use if sound is distorting to prevent overheating and fire. Avoid resting weight on the device or applying excessive force to controls. Do not pull on attached cables to prevent the speaker from toppling.
  • Interference from Cell Phones: Using a cell phone near the speaker system can induce noise. Move the cell phone further away if this occurs.
  • Component performance: The performance of components with moving contacts (switches, volume controls, connectors) deteriorates over time. Consult qualified Yamaha service personnel for replacing defective components.

This manual emphasizes safety precautions, proper setup, and troubleshooting to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Yamaha DSR series powered speakers.
