Overview

The Yamaha PW50L2 is an off-road motorcycle designed for recreational use. It is a single-track vehicle that emphasizes safety and ease of use, particularly for beginners and younger riders.

Function Description

The PW50L2 is a 2-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder motorcycle with a displacement of 49 cm³. It features a kickstarter for starting the engine and a separate lubrication system. The motorcycle is equipped with an adjustable speed limiter and a power reduction plate, allowing parents to control the available power and speed as a child learns to ride. The speed limiter restricts the throttle from fully opening, while the power reduction plate, installed in the exhaust manifold, further limits power output. These features are designed to help beginners gradually increase their skill level. The fuel cock has "S" (stop) and "O" (on) positions to control fuel flow to the carburetor. The engine stop switch has "OFF," "RUN," and "START" positions, with the "START" position limiting engine speed for learning.

Usage Features

The PW50L2 is designed for off-road use only and is not legal for public streets, roads, or highways. It is intended for a single operator, with a maximum rider weight of 25 kg (55 lb). Parents are advised to supervise their child's use and ensure they have adequate knowledge and training before operating the motorcycle. The adjustable speed limiter and removable power reduction plate allow for progressive power increases as the rider's skills improve. The throttle grip controls acceleration and deceleration. Both front and rear drum brakes are applied simultaneously for stopping. The motorcycle requires a break-in period of 5 hours of operation, during which excessive load and prolonged full-throttle operation should be avoided.

Maintenance Features

Regular inspections and maintenance are crucial for safe operation and longevity. Pre-operation checks include fuel level, fuel line, fuel tank breather hose, 2-stroke engine oil level, transmission oil level, middle and final gear cases for leakage, brake operation and free play, throttle grip free play, control cables, wheels and tires (condition, tread depth, air pressure), brake levers, centerstand operation, and chassis fasteners.

Periodic maintenance includes:

  • Emission Control System: Fuel line inspection/replacement, spark plug cleaning/replacement/gap adjustment, air filter element cleaning/replacement, carburetor adjustment (by dealer), cylinder head and exhaust system inspection, and spark arrester cleaning.
  • General Maintenance:
    • Brakes: Front and rear brake operation, free play adjustment, and shoe replacement when worn. Brake lever pivoting points require lithium-soap-based grease lubrication.
    • Wheels and Tires: Runout and damage inspection, replacement if necessary, tread depth and damage inspection, air pressure checks. Wheel rims should be checked for cracks, bends, warpage, or damage.
    • Bearings: Wheel bearings and steering bearings require smooth operation checks, replacement if necessary, and steering bearings need moderate repacking with lithium-soap-based grease every two years.
    • Gears: Middle and final gear cases checked for grease leakage, and gears lubricated with lithium-soap-based grease every two years.
    • Chassis: All chassis fittings and fasteners checked and tightened.
    • Autolube pump: Operation checked and adjusted (by dealer).
    • Transmission oil: Checked for leakage, corrected if necessary, and changed periodically.
    • Shock absorber assemblies: Operation checked for oil leakage and replaced if necessary.
    • Control cables and throttle grip: Checked for smooth operation, lubricated, and throttle grip free play adjusted.
    • Centerstand pivot: Lubricated with lithium-soap-based grease.
  • Spark Plug: Removal, inspection of porcelain insulator color, electrode erosion, and carbon deposits. Gap adjustment to 0.6–0.7 mm (0.024–0.028 in).
  • Power Reduction Plate: Removal for full engine performance capability, involving the exhaust manifold.
  • Transmission Oil Change: Draining old oil, refilling with 0.30 L of recommended transmission oil, and checking for leaks.
  • Air Filter Element: Cleaning with solvent and oiling with Yamaha foam air filter oil.
  • Spark Arrester: Removal of tailpipe, cleaning carbon deposits with a wire brush.
  • Carburetor: Engine idling speed adjustment to 1650–1750 r/min using the throttle stop screw.
  • Brake Lever Free Play: Adjustment to 10.0–20.0 mm (0.39–0.79 in) for both front and rear levers.
  • Brake Shoes: Checking thickness; replacement if less than 1.5 mm (0.06 in).
  • Cables: Checking operation, lubricating, and replacing if damaged.
  • Throttle Grip and Cable: Checking operation, lubricating, and adjusting free play.
  • Autolube Pump: Adjustment by a Yamaha dealer.
  • Brake Levers: Lubrication of pivoting points.
  • Centerstand: Checking operation and lubricating pivots.
  • Front Fork: Checking inner tubes for damage/leakage and smooth compression/rebound.
  • Steering: Checking for looseness or free play.
  • Wheel Bearings: Checking for play or smooth rotation.
  • Wheel Removal/Installation: Detailed procedures for front and rear wheels, including torque specifications for axle nuts and muffler bolts.

Storage: For short-term storage, the motorcycle should be kept in a dry, dust-free, well-ventilated area. For long-term storage, the fuel cock should be turned to "S" (stop), the carburetor float chamber drained, the fuel tank filled and treated with a fuel stabilizer, and the cylinder and piston rings protected from corrosion by pouring engine oil into the spark plug bore. All control cables and pivoting points should be lubricated, tire pressure checked, and wheels lifted off the ground or rotated monthly. The muffler outlet should be covered to prevent moisture entry.
