Questions and Answers

Overview

The Yamaha reface series is a collection of compact, portable keyboards designed to bring the sounds and feel of classic Yamaha keyboards to modern musicians. This V1.30 Updater Guide specifically addresses the reface CS, DX, CP, and YC models, providing instructions for updating their firmware to version 1.30 and detailing the enhancements introduced with this update.

Function Description

The reface series comprises four distinct models, each emulating a different type of classic keyboard:

  • reface CS: A synthesizer that recreates the sounds of classic analog synthesizers, offering a wide range of sonic possibilities from warm pads to sharp leads.
  • reface DX: A digital synthesizer that brings the iconic sounds of Yamaha's DX7 FM synthesis engine to a compact form factor, known for its distinctive bell-like tones, basses, and electric pianos.
  • reface CP: An electric piano that faithfully reproduces the sounds of vintage electric pianos, including Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Clavinet, complete with authentic effects.
  • reface YC: An organ that delivers the sounds of classic combo organs, featuring various drawbar settings and rotary speaker effects for a rich, vibrant organ experience.

All reface models are designed for portability, featuring built-in speakers and the option for battery power, making them suitable for practice, performance, and music creation on the go. They also include a mini-key keyboard, USB connectivity for MIDI and audio, and a Phrase Looper for creative layering and performance.

Usage Features

The reface series offers a user-friendly interface with dedicated controls for each model's specific functions, allowing for intuitive sound shaping and performance.

  • Compatibility: The updater is specifically designed for the reface CS, DX, CP, and YC models.
  • Data Reset: When updating the reface CP or reface YC, all settings, including keyboard settings, will revert to their factory defaults. Users should be aware of this and back up any critical settings if possible, although the manual does not detail a backup procedure.
  • User Responsibility: The updater is to be used at the user's own risk, highlighting the importance of following instructions carefully.
  • System Requirements: A computer running specific operating systems is required: Microsoft Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 (32-bit or 64-bit), or Mac OSX 10.9, 10.10, or 10.11.
  • Update Duration: The update process takes approximately five minutes.
  • Power Stability: It is crucial to power the reface using its AC adaptor during the update to prevent power interruptions.
  • System Stability: Users are advised not to launch or operate any other applications on the computer during the update to ensure system stability.
  • Troubleshooting: In case of an update failure due to power interruption or incorrect operation, repeating the procedure may not resolve the issue. If the reface fails to function after repeated attempts, users are instructed to contact their nearest Yamaha service center.
