8.2 MEASURES BEFORE LAUNCHING IN THE SPRING
In sea areas, the bottom of the hull must be painted with antifouling paint in order to prevent
fouling by seaweed. The fouling of the bottom and the propeller in particular increase fuel
consumption considerably. However, if the boat is moored at the mouth of a river, in the lake
district, in the Gulf of Bothnia, or if it is hoisted out of the water at least every other week, no
antifouling paint is normally needed. When painting the boat, carefully follow the instructions
of the paint manufacturer. If you sand down old antifouling paint, remember that the dust or
swarf is toxic.
Useful tip: Do not discard the paintbrush after use. A stiff antifouling paint brush can be
softened by keeping it in a mixture of two litres of hot water, one decilitre of
vinegar and half a decilitre of baking powder.
Perform engine maintenance procedures as instructed in the engine manual. Check the
operation of electrical instruments and remove oxidation from fuses and couplings.
Remember that gasoline turns stale in time. Always use fresh fuel when you start the engine
for the first time after winter storage.
After the boat has been launched, open all bushing valves and check hoses and connectors
for leaks. The location of bushings is described in chapter 5. Take the safety equipment on
board before getting underway.
