This document describes the Yardworks 14" (36 cm) Brushless Grass Trimmer, a battery-operated gardening appliance designed for cutting grass and weeds. It is intended for use under bushes, on slopes, and along edges that cannot be reached with a lawn mower. The trimmer is engineered for dependability and performance, emphasizing user safety and proper operation.
The Yardworks Brushless Grass Trimmer is a cordless tool powered by a rechargeable battery pack. Its primary function is to trim grass and weeds using a rotating line. The brushless motor technology aims to provide efficient power delivery and potentially a longer tool life compared to brushed motors. The trimmer features a two-speed gear control, allowing the user to select between "Low" and "High" speeds to suit different working conditions and grass types. This flexibility helps optimize cutting performance and battery life.
The trimmer head is designed to release additional cutting line without stopping the motor. This is achieved by lightly tapping the bump knob on the ground during operation, which feeds out more line as needed. A line cutter is integrated into the safety guard to ensure the line is always at a suitable length for effective trimming. The design also allows for easy replacement of the spool and line when necessary.
Before operating the trimmer, users are instructed to read and understand all safety rules and operating instructions. Key safety measures include wearing eye and ear protection, keeping hands and feet away from the cutting area, and ensuring children and pets are kept at a safe distance from the work area. The trimmer should not be used in damp or wet locations or in the rain. Proper attire, including work gloves, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and safety footwear, is recommended.
Assembly of the trimmer involves connecting the upper and lower shafts, securing them with a hex key, and attaching the auxiliary handle. The safety guard must also be securely fastened to the trimmer head before operation. The hex key used for assembly should be stored in the designated notch on the grass trimmer to prevent loss.
The battery pack, which is not fully charged upon purchase, must be charged before first use. The charging procedure involves plugging the charger into an outlet and sliding the battery pack into the charger. An indicator light signals the charging status, turning solid green when fully charged. It is important to allow a hot battery pack to cool down before recharging to prevent damage. For optimal battery life, the battery should be charged to full or at least half charge before storage, and recharged every 3-6 months if not used for long periods.
To operate the trimmer, the user must first press the lock-off button, then the On/Off switch. Releasing the On/Off switch turns the trimmer off. The two-speed gear control allows the user to switch between "Low" and "High" speeds based on the task. When trimming, the trimmer head should be held at an angle of about 30° to the ground. It is advised not to cut wet grass, as it can stick to the trimmer head and guard, potentially causing slips and falls. Trimming should be done rhythmically, working from right to left to direct clippings away from the work area. For long or high grass, it is recommended to cut in 2 to 3 stages to avoid ineffective cutting and potential damage. The trimmer should not be moved too fast during operation.
The cutting line length can be adjusted during operation by lightly tapping the bump knob on the ground. If the line cutter becomes dull, line release may become difficult. Users are warned not to remove or alter the line-cutting blade assembly.
Replacing the spool and line is a straightforward process. The cap is removed by pressing and holding two release latches and rotating it counter-clockwise. The old spool is then removed, and a new spool is placed into the cutting head, with the line fed through the eyelet. The cap is then replaced and tightened clockwise. If only the line needs to be replaced, a 16-foot (5 m) line is inserted into a notch in the middle of the spool and wound clockwise, ensuring it is neatly coiled to maintain the efficiency of the automatic bump line feed. The trimmer is designed to use line with a maximum diameter of 0.080” (.20 cm).
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Yardworks Grass Trimmer. Before each use, the product should be checked for any damage. After use, the battery should be disconnected, and the tool should be inspected for damage.
The power tool does not require additional lubrication or maintenance by the user, as there are no user-serviceable parts. Water or chemical cleaners should not be used to clean the power tool; instead, it should be wiped clean with a dry cloth. It is important to keep the motor ventilation slots clean and all working controls free of dust.
For battery tools, the recommended ambient temperature range for use and storage of both the tool and battery is 0°C to 45°C. The charging system operates best within a temperature range of 0°C to 40°C. For winter months, it is recommended to store the battery indoors.
Troubleshooting guidance is provided for common issues such as the trimmer failing to operate, running intermittently, excessive vibrations/noise, short cutting time per battery charge, or the machine not cutting. These issues often relate to battery charge, temperature, or proper insertion, as well as line spool condition or grass entanglement. Users are reminded to switch off the trimmer and remove the battery before performing any troubleshooting.
Proper disposal of batteries is also emphasized. Yardworks Inc. has partnered with the RBRC Corporation to recycle Yardworks® batteries with the RBRC-call2recycle seal, encouraging users to call 1-800-822-8837 for free battery disposal service at the end of its life cycle, rather than discarding them in the trash. This highlights an environmental responsibility aspect of the product's lifecycle.
The manual also outlines warranty information, including a five-year limited warranty for the tool and a three-year limited warranty for the battery within Canada, covering defects in material or workmanship. Normal wear parts have a full one-year warranty. The warranty does not cover misuse, commercial use, abuse, neglect, accidents, improper maintenance, alterations, or normal wear and tear of certain components. To obtain service, customers are directed to call a toll-free helpline. Transportation charges for warranty service are the responsibility of the purchaser unless otherwise specified.
