Overview

The document describes the Yardworks 10-Inch 20V Lithium-ion Chainsaw (Model LCS31020-1), which comes with one 20V 2.0Ah Lithium-ion Battery.

Function Description:

This is a cordless electric chainsaw designed for personal, household, or family use. Its primary function is cutting wood, specifically for tasks like limbing, bucking, and pruning. It features an automatic oiling system to lubricate the chain during operation. The chainsaw is battery-operated, emphasizing portability and ease of use without the need for a power cord.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: LCS31020-1
  • Input: 20 V / 2.0 Ah, DC Only
  • Bar Length: 10 inches (M1501040-1041TL)
  • Chain: CL15040 (Oregon 91PJ040X)
  • Weight: 6.1 lbs.
  • Battery: BL82120-1 (20V battery)
  • Charger: CHL82000-1 (20V charger)

Usage Features:

  • Cordless Operation: Powered by a 20V Lithium-ion battery, offering freedom of movement without a power cord.
  • Automatic Oiling System: Continuously lubricates the chain and guide bar during operation, reducing wear and ensuring smooth cutting.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Requires reading and understanding the owner's manual before use to reduce the risk of injury.
    • Emphasizes wearing appropriate personal hearing protection and eye protection.
    • Warns against operating in explosive atmospheres or near flammable liquids/gases.
    • Stresses keeping children and bystanders away.
    • Requires firm grip with both hands on the handles, positioning the body to resist kickback forces.
    • Advises against overreaching or cutting above shoulder height.
    • Includes a hand guard and guide bar cover for safety during operation and storage.
    • Features a trigger release button and trigger switch for controlled operation.
    • Kickback Prevention: Users are instructed on how kickback occurs (tip contact or pinching) and how to prevent it by maintaining a firm grip, avoiding overreach, and using specified replacement bars and chains.
    • Proper Cutting Stance: Maintain balance with both feet on solid ground, left arm locked straight, and body to the left of the chain line.
    • Basic Cutting Procedure: Allow the chain to cut, exert only light downward pressure, and avoid forcing the cut.
    • Felling a Tree: Detailed instructions include planning an escape route (135 degrees from planned line of fall), checking for damaged branches, making a notched undercut (1/3 diameter, perpendicular to fall direction), and a felling back-cut (at least 2 inches above the notch, leaving a "hinge" of wood). Warnings against felling in high winds or heavy precipitation, or trees with extreme lean/rotten limbs.
    • Limbing: Removing branches from a fallen tree, working slowly, maintaining firm grip and balance. Limbs under tension should be cut from the bottom up.
    • Bucking: Cutting a fallen tree into logs. Instructions for over-bucking (from top) and under-bucking (from bottom) depending on log support and stress.
    • Pruning: Trimming limbs from a live tree, working slowly, maintaining firm grip and balance. Involves under-bucking 1/3 through, then over-bucking to drop the branch, followed by a finishing cut.
    • Springpoles: Warns about the danger of springpoles (bent wood under tension) and the potential for severe injury.
  • Battery Charging:
    • Battery must be charged before first use. Two to three initial charging/discharging cycles may be required for maximum run time/capacity.
    • Charge only with the specified Yardworks 20V Chargers.
    • Initial charge time: at least 80 minutes.
    • Operate charger between 39°F and 104°F.
    • Store battery in a cool, dry place.
    • Fully charged battery can be stored for up to four weeks at -4°F before needing recharge. Recharge every 90 days.
    • Do not incinerate battery packs; they can explode.
    • Charger should be disconnected when not in use to prevent damage from power surges.
    • LED indicator on charger: Constant Red = charging, Constant Green = fully charged.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Care:
    • Inspect for damage after dropping.
    • Clean with mild soap and a damp cloth; do not immerse in liquid.
    • Avoid contact with brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or penetrating oils, as these can damage plastic parts.
    • Store with the plastic bar cover in place.
    • Do not store near fertilizers or other garden chemicals due to corrosion.
  • Chain Tension:
    • Remove battery before adjusting tension.
    • Loosen guide bar screw, turn chain tensioner clockwise until chain is snug but can be turned by hand without binding (cold tension).
    • Re-tension when flats on drive links hang out of the bar groove.
    • Warm chain tension: drive links hang approximately 0.050 in. (1.25mm) out of the bar groove. Check cold tension before next use.
    • New chains tend to stretch and require frequent tension checks.
  • Chain Lubrication:
    • The chain is automatically lubricated.
    • Fill oil well with new quality bar and chain oil, or unused SAE 30 weight motor oil.
    • Never use wasted, low quality, or insufficient oil.
    • Check oil level before each use; refill if below minimum.
    • If lubrication system fails, check for obstructions in oil-ways.
  • Guide Bar Maintenance:
    • Reverse the guide bar periodically to distribute wear and maximize life.
    • Clean daily and check for wear/damage.
    • Smooth feathering or burring of bar rails with a file.
    • Replace if bent, cracked, broken, or if rails are spread or worn inside.
    • If the guide bar has a sprocket at the tip, lubricate weekly with a grease syringe in the lubricating hole.
    • Check lubrication holes and chain groove for obstructions.
  • Chain Sharpening:
    • Remove battery before sharpening.
    • Chain needs sharpening when wood chips are small/powdery, or if forced through wood, or if cutting to one side.
    • Improper filing angle can increase kickback risk.
    • Wear gloves for protection.
    • Tension chain properly before sharpening.
    • Use a 5/32 in. diameter round file and holder.
    • Keep file level with the top plate of the tooth; use light, firm pressure, stroking towards the front corner.
    • File all cutters to specified angles (30 degrees for top plate) and same length for uniform cutting.
    • Lift file away on return stroke.
    • File left-hand cutters in one direction, then right-hand cutters in the opposite direction.
    • Depth Gauge Clearance: Maintain at 0.025 in. (0.6 mm). Use a depth gauge tool and flat file to lower gauges uniformly. Round the front after lowering.
  • Drive Sprocket: Inspect for wear or damage when replacing the chain; replace if signs of wear are present.
  • Battery Disposal: Lithium-ion batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly. Do not destroy or disassemble. Contact local recycling centers or call 1-800-8BATTERY for information.
