SECTION I: USER’S INFORMATION
SAFETY
1. The furnace area must be kept clear and free of combustible mate-
rials, gasoline and other flammable vapors and liquids.
2. Insulating materials may be combustible. The furnace must be
kept free and clear of insulating materials. The furnace area must
be examined when installed in an attic or other insulated space or
when insulation is added to be sure that the insulation material has
been kept away from the furnace.
3. The furnace needs air for combustion in order to operate properly
and safely. Do not block or obstruct air openings on the furnace,
air openings to the area where the furnace is installed, or spaces
around the furnace.
4. Follow the instructions exactly as shown on the OPERATING
INSTRUCTION LABEL or the Start-up and Shutdown Instructions
on Page 3 of this manual when lighting the furnace or turning the
furnace off.
5. Should the gas supply fail to shut off or if overheating occurs, shut
off the gas valve to the furnace before shutting off the electrical
supply.
6. Do not use this furnace if any part has been under water. A flood-
damaged furnace is extremely dangerous. Attempts to use the fur-
nace can result in fire or explosion. A qualified service agency
should be contacted to inspect the furnace and replace all gas
controls, control system parts, electrical parts that have been wet
or the furnace if deemed necessary.
FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARD - Failure to follow
safety warnings exactly could result in serious injury,
death, or property damage.
— Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable
vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any
other appliance.
— WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS:
Do not try to light any appliance.
Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any
phone (including cell phone) in your building.
Leave the building immediately.
Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s
phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.
If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire
department.
— Installation and service must be performed by a
qualified installer, service agency or the gas sup-
plier.

Overview

This document is a User's Information, Maintenance, and Service Manual for York International's PC9 series of modulating downflow/horizontal furnaces equipped with ECM motors. It provides comprehensive details on the furnace's operation, safety, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The York PC9 furnace is designed to provide heating for residential spaces. It utilizes a modulating gas valve and an ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) blower to deliver variable heating capacity and airflow, optimizing comfort and efficiency. The furnace operates by igniting natural gas or LP propane gas to heat a heat exchanger, and then a circulating blower distributes the warm air throughout the home. The control system continuously monitors and adjusts the firing rate and airflow based on thermostat demand and past performance, ensuring precise temperature control. It features a hot surface ignition system for automatic burner lighting and various safety controls to ensure safe operation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Ignition System: Hot Surface Ignition System.
  • Blower Motor: ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) for variable speed operation.
  • Heating Capacity: Modulating, with firing rates adjustable from a minimum (35%) to maximum (100%) based on demand.
  • Airflow: Variable airflow for both heating and cooling operations, adjustable via jumpers on the control board.
  • Control System: Features a self-diagnostic capability with LED fault codes for troubleshooting. Includes memory for storing up to five error codes.
  • Transformer: 40 VA.
  • Electrical Supply: 115V-1-60.
  • Filter Sizes (Top Return):
    • 60 (17.6) BTU/H (kW) / 1200 (34) CFM (m³/min) (Cabinet Size B): (2) 14 x 20 (36 x 51)
    • 80 (23.4) BTU/H (kW) / 1200 (34) CFM (m³/min) (Cabinet Size B): (2) 14 x 20 (36 x 51)

    • 120 (35.1) BTU/H (kW) / 2000 (57) CFM (m³/min) (Cabinet Size D): (2) 14 x 20 (36 x 51)
  • Warranty: Limited warranty covering factory workmanship and material defects. Primary heat exchangers have a lifetime warranty for the original owner in residential applications, 20 years for subsequent owners, and 10 years for non-residential applications. Parts have a 5-year warranty.

Usage Features

  • Modulating Operation: The furnace automatically adjusts its firing rate and blower speed to match heating demand, providing consistent comfort and energy efficiency. This differs from conventional systems that simply turn on and off.
  • Automatic Ignition: Equipped with a hot surface ignition device, eliminating the need for a pilot light and manual ignition.
  • Thermostat Integration: Works with a wall thermostat (R and W contacts) to initiate and control heating cycles.
  • Cooling Airflow Adjustment: The airflow delivered during cooling operation can be adjusted via "COOL" and "ADJ" jumpers on the control board to match the A/C condensing unit's capacity.
  • Continuous Fan Operation: Airflow for continuous fan operation can be adjusted using the "RECIRC" jumper on the control board, offering maximum (100%), approximately 70%, or approximately 35% of blower capacity.
  • Delay Taps Selection: "DELAY" jumpers on the control board allow selection of different delay profiles (Tap A, B, C, D) to optimize comfort and sound levels based on regional preferences. These profiles affect ramp-up and ramp-down times for airflow and heating capacity.
  • Humidistat Integration: If a humidistat is installed, moving the "Humidistat connected?" jumper to "YES" reduces cooling airflow by 15% when high humidity is detected.
  • Self-Diagnostic System: An LED on the control board flashes fault codes (red, green, or amber) to indicate system problems, aiding in troubleshooting.
  • Error Code Storage: The control board can store up to five error codes in memory, which can be retrieved by a service technician using the "LAST ERROR" button, even if power to the furnace is lost.

Maintenance Features

  • Annual Inspection: The owner is responsible for ensuring an annual inspection of the heating portion of the unit by a qualified service agency. This includes examining the heat exchanger, vent/combustion air piping, return-air duct connections, furnace casing, and burner flames.
  • Filter Maintenance: Air filters should be checked every 3 months (weekly for the first four weeks in new construction). Dirty filters restrict airflow, potentially damaging furnace components and causing overheating. Filters can be cleaned (for cleanable types) or replaced (for throw-away types).
  • Blower Care: Blower wheels and motors should be inspected annually for dust accumulation. If heavily coated, they can be brushed and vacuumed. If removal is necessary, it should be performed by a qualified service agency. The clip-on weight on the indoor fan wheel should not be moved during cleaning.
  • Motor Lubrication: The furnace motors are permanently lubricated and do not require periodic oiling.
  • Burner Cleaning: Main burners should be periodically checked for dirt accumulation and cleaned by a qualified service agency if necessary. This involves disconnecting power and gas, removing the burner box cover, disconnecting wires, removing igniter and burners, rinsing burners, and reassembling.
  • Heat Exchanger Cleaning: Requires a qualified service agency to clean the primary and secondary heat exchangers using a flexible wire brush and vacuum. This involves extensive disassembly and reassembly.
  • Vent/Air Intake System Cleaning: Should be serviced by a qualified service agency if necessary, as it requires reassembly and resealing of the system.
  • Condensate Collection and Disposal System: Should be checked and serviced by a qualified service agency.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes turning off electrical and gas supplies before servicing, proper ventilation, not bypassing safety controls, and contacting qualified technicians for repairs.
  • Contact Information: Provides website and mailing address for customer relations and replacement parts information.
