Overview

The Yost 750-E Vise is a robust clamping tool designed for securing workpieces during various tasks. It is manufactured by Yost Vises, LLC, located at 388 W. 24th St., Holland, MI 49423.

Function Description

The primary function of the Yost 750-E Vise is to securely hold objects, allowing for work to be performed on them. It features a swivel base that enables rotation of the vise, providing flexible access to the clamped item from different angles. The vise is designed to be mounted on a workbench, ensuring stability during operation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model Number: 750-E
  • Item Number: 12750
  • Jaw Width: 5 inches
  • Jaw Opening: 4-7/8 inches
  • Pipe Capacity: 0.5 inches to 2.5 inches
  • Throat Depth: 3 inches
  • Weight: 37 lbs
  • Maximum Torque Rating: 165 Foot-Pounds
  • Maximum Applied Load (Clamping Force): 7,000 pounds

Usage Features

The Yost 750-E Vise is designed for ease of use and versatility, with several features that enhance its functionality:

  • Secure Mounting: The vise requires secure mounting to a workbench. It is recommended to use proper length and diameter bolts with flat washers, lock washers, and locking nuts. For added strength, an 18” x 18” x 2” piece of wood or an 18” x 18” x ½” metal plate should be placed underneath the workbench at the mounting location. The bolts should protrude at least 1 inch beyond the underside of the workbench and any reinforcing plate.
  • Swivel Base Operation: The vise features a swivel base that allows the operator to rotate the vise to different positions. This is achieved by loosening the two lockdown handles (Part #12750-2 and #12750-3) located on both sides of the vise, rotating the vise to the desired angle, and then securely tightening the lockdowns. The rotational lockdown handle (Part #12750-3) is specifically designed for this function.
  • Clamping Mechanism: The vise uses a T-handle and spindle (Part #12750-4) to open and close the jaw assembly (Part #12750-1). Turning the handle counterclockwise opens the jaws, and turning it clockwise closes them, securing the workpiece.
  • Capacity: The vise has a 5-inch jaw width and a 4-7/8-inch jaw opening, accommodating a range of workpiece sizes. It also includes a pipe capacity of 0.5 to 2.5 inches, making it suitable for holding cylindrical objects.
  • Safety Instructions: The manual emphasizes several safety precautions, including:
    • Always ensuring bench tops are properly secured.
    • Using proper nuts, bolts, and lock washers for mounting.
    • Selecting a vise of appropriate size and capacity for the work object.
    • Wearing eye, face, and ear protection when striking or using power tools.
    • Wearing a dust mask or respirator when working with dusts or mists.
    • Wearing restrictive hair covering and anti-slip footwear.
    • Hand-tightening swivel base lockdowns.
    • Inspecting the vise for stress fatigue or damage before use.
    • Never using a hammer, extension pipe, or cheater bar on the spindle handle.
    • Never unscrewing the movable jaw beyond its maximum specified opening.
    • Never welding the base of the vise to any metal object.
    • Never using the vise to press an object into or out of another object.
    • Never using an extension pipe to tighten lockdown handles.
    • Never placing pressurized containers or combustible materials in the vise.
    • Never wearing loose clothing or jewelry.
    • Never applying extreme or prolonged heat to the vise, as it may alter structural properties.
    • Ensuring the work area is dry, well-lit, clean, and unobstructed.
    • Confirming the workbench is properly secured and designed to handle the vise and workload.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Yost 750-E Vise:

  • Lubrication: The main screw of the vise should be greased regularly to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the vise for any signs of stress fatigue or damage. This includes checking the mounting bolts and re-tightening them as necessary.
  • Re-tightening: After initial installation and periodically thereafter, recheck and re-tighten the nuts securing the vise to the workbench to maintain stability.

The Yost 750-E Vise is a durable and versatile tool, provided that it is installed, operated, and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions. Exceeding its rated torque or clamping force can lead to product failure and potential injury.
