Overview

The CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device is a veterinary product designed for use in sheep and goats, primarily for reproductive management. It is intended to be inserted into the animal's vulva using a specialized applicator.

Function Description:

The CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device is a controlled internal drug release device, specifically designed to deliver progesterone to the animal. Progesterone is a hormone crucial for regulating the estrous cycle in female sheep and goats. By releasing progesterone, the device helps to synchronize estrus, induce estrus in anestrous animals, or maintain pregnancy. This allows for more efficient breeding programs, facilitating artificial insemination or natural breeding within a defined timeframe. The device is inserted for a specific period, after which it is removed, leading to a synchronized estrus in the treated animals.

Important Technical Specifications:

The device itself consists of an insert with two flexible wings and a tail. The wings are designed to be folded together for insertion and then expand once inside to hold the device in place. The tail protrudes from the animal's vulva, allowing for easy removal. The material of the device is designed to be non-irritant to the animal's tissues. The tail of the device, once inserted, is recommended to be trimmed to approximately 5cm (2 inches) to prevent the animal or other inquisitive animals from pulling it out prematurely.

Usage Features:

Loading the Applicator:

  • Gloves: Always wear gloves when handling the CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination.
  • Device Preparation: Take one CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device and fold its wings together.
  • Applicator Fit: Fit the body of the insert into the applicator. The tail of the device should be aligned with the slot on the applicator and point towards the plunger.
  • Protrusion: Once loaded, approximately 2 centimeters of the folded wings will protrude above the top of the applicator, indicating it is correctly loaded and ready for insertion.

Preparation for Insertion:

  • Applicator Disinfection: Immerse the applicator in a non-irritant disinfectant solution specifically recommended for animal use. This is crucial to prevent infections.
  • Vulval Cleaning: Clean the vulval lips of the animal thoroughly with a paper towel to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Lubrication: Dip the applicator, with the device loaded, into veterinary obstetrical lubricant. Ensure a generous amount of lubricant is applied to facilitate smooth and comfortable insertion for the animal.

Insertion Procedure:

  • Vulval Opening: Gently part the lips of the animal's vulva with one hand.
  • Initial Insertion: Insert the loaded applicator with the device's tail curling downwards.
  • Angle Adjustment: Point the tip of the applicator slightly upwards and gently insert it through the vulva.
  • "Up and Over" Technique: Once the applicator is inserted halfway and some resistance is felt, re-angle the CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device horizontally. Continue to pass it over the pelvic bone. This technique is described as "up and over" to ensure proper placement and minimize discomfort.
  • Device Release: Gently squeeze the plunger of the applicator to release the CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device inside the animal.
  • Applicator Removal: Twist the applicator slightly and then gently remove it from the vulva.
  • Confirmation of Placement: After removal, the blue tail of the CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device should be visible, protruding out and downwards from the vulva, confirming successful placement.
  • Tail Trimming: To prevent premature removal by the animal or other animals, cut the protruding tail of the CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device to approximately 5cm (2 inches).

Removal Procedure:

  • Gloves: Always wear gloves when removing the device to maintain hygiene.
  • Gentle Pull: Gently remove the device by pulling downwards on the visible tail. The flexible wings will collapse for easy removal.

Maintenance Features:

  • Applicator Cleaning and Disinfection: After each use, the applicator must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. This involves cleaning, disinfecting, and then re-loading the applicator for the next animal. This step is critical to prevent the spread of pathogens between animals.
  • Disposal: Used CIDR® Sheep and Goat Devices must be disposed of properly in a sealed plastic container. This prevents environmental contamination and potential exposure to residual hormones or biological materials.

The CIDR® Sheep and Goat Device is a valuable tool in modern animal husbandry, enabling precise control over reproductive cycles and improving breeding efficiency. Adherence to the detailed insertion and removal instructions, along with proper hygiene and disposal, is essential for the safety and well-being of the animals and the effectiveness of the treatment.
