Do you have a question about the Zoetis stablelab EQ-1 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Stablelab EQ-1 Handheld Reader is an in-vitro quantitative device designed for veterinary use, specifically for determining equine Serum Amyloid A (SAA) levels. It is a point-of-care analytical instrument intended for use with equine whole blood, serum, or plasma samples, exclusively with Stablelab SAA test cartridges.

Function Description:

The EQ-1 Handheld Reader measures SAA levels in equine samples. It operates in two modes: Standard Mode and Quick Mode.

  • Standard Mode: This mode is designed for running a single Stablelab SAA cartridge in 10 minutes. The reader automatically times the test and displays the result after 10 minutes. The device turns on automatically when a new cartridge is inserted and displays "Apply Sample." After sample application, it initiates a 9-minute countdown. The result is displayed for 20 seconds and then stored until the cartridge is removed. It reappears for 5 seconds after cartridge removal before being deleted. The reader powers down automatically to conserve energy.
  • Quick Mode: This mode is used for running multiple Stablelab SAA cartridges in sequence. In Quick Mode, the user is responsible for timing each test precisely for 10 minutes. Cartridges are individually inserted into the reader at the end of the 10-minute development period to obtain a quantitative SAA value. The letter "Q" is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen when the cartridge is inserted in this mode. The SAA result is displayed immediately for 20 seconds before being permanently deleted. After recording the result, the cartridge is removed, and the next one is inserted as it reaches the 10-minute mark. The reader also powers down automatically in this mode to conserve energy.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Detection Range: The device has a detection range of 0-3000 µg/ml of equine SAA. A reading of zero indicates that SAA is not detected.
  • Battery: The reader operates on a 9V battery (Duracell Coppertop 9V disposable battery recommended for optimal performance).
  • Sample Volume (Whole Blood): The BloodCaptor™ included with each test pack accurately measures 8.5 µl of whole blood.
  • Sample Volume (Serum/Plasma): For serum or plasma samples, a micropipette device capable of measuring 5 µl is used.
  • Test Time: Both Standard and Quick modes require a 10-minute development time for accurate results.
  • Operating Temperature: The device is calibrated to operate between 15°C and 35°C.
  • Storage Temperature: Performance may be impaired if stored below -10°C or above 50°C.

Usage Features:

  • Reader Display: Shows test results and messages like "Apply Sample" or countdown timers.
  • Reader Mode Switch: Allows selection between Standard and Quick modes.
  • Cartridge Port: Where Stablelab SAA test cartridges are inserted. The cartridge port door protects the internal lens.
  • Battery Port: Located on the side of the reader for battery insertion.
  • Sample Preparation:
    • Whole Blood: Fresh whole blood should be used immediately, or refrigerated samples within 12 hours. The BloodCaptor™ collects 8.5 µl directly from a syringe hub via capillary action. The blood-filled BloodCaptor™ is then firmly inserted into the Mix Solution bottle.
    • Serum and Plasma: Any standard blood collection tube can be used. After centrifugation, 5 µl of serum or plasma is measured with a micropipette and deposited into the Mix Solution bottle. An empty BloodCaptor™ is then firmly inserted into the Mix Solution.
    • After sample preparation, the Mix Solution is gently agitated, and 4 drops are applied to the cartridge well.
  • Result Interpretation: Test cartridges must be read exactly at 10 minutes. Reading before 10 minutes will yield a falsely lower SAA value, and reading after 10 minutes will yield a falsely elevated SAA value. Re-inserting a cartridge beyond the 10-minute mark for rechecking is not recommended as it will give an erroneous result.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The 9V battery can be replaced by removing two screws from the battery door using the provided screwdriver. Ensure the + and - symbols on the battery and reader align.
  • "Clean Lens" Error/Lens Cleaning: If a "Clean Lens" error appears, indicating dirt on the lens affecting performance, the lens needs cleaning.
    1. Open the cartridge port door.
    2. Tilt the reader up to locate the silver-black lens strip inside the cartridge port.
    3. Carefully clean the lens with a clean cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol, moving it back and forth. Do not use other liquids or cloth types.
    4. After cleaning, inspect for any remaining particulates.
    5. Important: The reader MUST be reset after cleaning by completely removing and re-inserting or replacing the battery.
  • Resetting the Device: If the reader is not performing optimally, it can be reset by removing and re-inserting or replacing the battery.

Precautions:

  • Do not operate near fire or after contact with water.
  • Do not expose or immerse in liquid.
  • Use only with Stablelab SAA cartridges.
  • Do not allow foreign objects to enter the device.
  • Do not use if damaged.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair; contact Zoetis for repairs.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, avoiding extreme temperatures (-10°C to 50°C) or moisture.
  • The device is for veterinary use only.
