Overview

The Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Stethoscope is a medical device designed for limited physical assessment and general purpose uses, including blood pressure assessment and auscultation of heart, lung, and other body sounds. It is manufactured by 3M Health Care.

Function Description:

The stethoscope allows healthcare professionals to listen to internal sounds of the body. Its innovative chestpiece design, featuring an ovoid shape and offset bell, facilitates easy access to auscultation areas that might be difficult to reach with traditional circular chestpieces. The device incorporates 3M's tunable style diaphragm, which enables the user to monitor both low and high-frequency sounds without needing to turn over the chestpiece. Light skin contact allows for listening to low frequencies (traditional bell mode), while firm pressure on the chestpiece activates the high-frequency mode. The headset is anatomically correct and comfortably angled, with patented 3M™ Littmann® Soft-Sealing Eartips designed for maximum acoustic performance and a comfortable, acoustically sealed ear fit. The eartips are designed to point in a forward direction when inserted into the ear canals.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Chestpiece: Ovoid shaped with an offset bell.
  • Diaphragm: Tunable style, capable of monitoring both low and high frequencies.
  • Tube: Single lumen.
  • Eartips: Patented 3M™ Littmann® Soft-Sealing Eartips.
  • Headset: Anatomically correct and comfortably angled.
  • Materials: Non-chill rim and diaphragm. The product and package do not contain natural rubber latex.

Usage Features:

  • Frequency Adjustment: The tunable diaphragm allows for seamless switching between low and high-frequency sounds by simply alternating between light and firm pressure on the chestpiece. For low frequencies, light skin contact is used, mimicking a traditional bell mode. For high frequencies, firm pressure is applied to the chestpiece.
  • Ergonomics: The ovoid chestpiece and offset bell enhance accessibility to various auscultation sites. The headset's design ensures a comfortable and secure fit, with eartips that snap firmly into place on the eartubes.
  • Headset Tension Adjustment:
    • To reduce spring tension, hold each ear tube at the bend near the eartip and gradually pull them apart until fully extended.
    • To increase spring tension, grasp the headset where the ear tubes enter the plastic tubing and squeeze until the plastic tubing on one ear tube touches the other. This can be repeated as necessary.
  • Eartip Replacement: For optimal acoustic performance, the soft-sealing eartips are provided. To remove, pull firmly on the eartip. To attach, push them onto the end of the eartube until they snap firmly into place.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The entire stethoscope can be wiped clean with alcohol or soapy water. Eartips can be removed from the ear tubes for thorough cleaning.
  • Disinfection: If disinfection is required, the stethoscope may be wiped with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution.
  • Diaphragm Removal and Cleaning:
    • With the diaphragm side up, push the rim at one point with both thumbs and roll the rim off the edge of the chestpiece.
    • Remove the diaphragm from the rim and clean parts in soapy water or wipe with alcohol.
    • Wipe chestpiece surfaces with alcohol or soapy water.
    • Dry all parts and surfaces thoroughly before reassembly.
  • Diaphragm Assembly and Replacement:
    • Apply a small amount of talcum powder to the inside surface of the flexible edge of the diaphragm to facilitate assembly and maintain smooth low/high frequency alternation.
    • Snap the diaphragm with fingers to remove excess talcum powder.
    • Insert the flexible edge of the diaphragm into the groove of the rim, starting with the rim positioned above the legible side of the diaphragm.
    • Visually inspect the ring to ensure the flexible edge is smoothly engaged inside the rim. If necessary, flex the assembly by pinching the outer rim edge between the thumb and fingers.
    • To attach the rim/diaphragm assembly to the chestpiece, engage the groove of the rim around the chestpiece at one point, hold it in place with thumbs, and slowly roll the rim around and over the chestpiece edge using both thumbs, moving in opposite directions.
    • Visually inspect the edge where the diaphragm engages the rim for uniform containment. Minor adjustments can be made by slightly pulling and rolling the rim away from the diaphragm, allowing it to slip into position.
  • Precautions: Avoid extreme heat, cold, solvents, and oils. Do not immerse the stethoscope in any liquid or subject it to steam sterilization.
  • Warranty: The Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Stethoscope is warranted against defects in material and workmanship for a period of two (2) years. Repairs will be made without charge upon return to 3M for material or manufacturing defects discovered during the warranty period, except in cases of obvious abuse or accidental damage.
