PREPARATION FOR USE
Selection
The selection of the appropriate helmet should be based on a risk
assessment of the exposure to hazards in the workplace. For specific
performance features of the 3M™ SecureFit™ Safety Helmets see section
Technical Specification. If X5000 is selected, the chinstrap EN-standard
selector on the X5000 allows for an easy switch between the EN12492 and EN397
standards. Ensure all 4 chinstrap switches have been selected in the correct position before
use (Fig 1).
Electrically Insulating Helmets
The double triangle marking on the helmet indicates that this helmet is electrically insulated
and approved according to EN50365:2002 for use in low voltage installations up to a
nominal value of 1000Vac. The user has to check that the electrical limits of the helmets
correspond to the nominal voltage that it is likely to encounter during use. The electrically
insulating helmet cannot be used alone, it is necessary to use other insulating protective
equipment according to the risks involved in the work. Insulating helmets should not be used
in situations where there is a risk which could partially reduce its insulating properties.
Ageing, inappropriate cleaning, and use outside of conditions given in this user instruction
may limit the effectiveness of this product. A chinstrap with magnetic buckle, available
as accessory or spare part, shall not be used for electrically insulating helmets. When
not in use it is recommended that the helmet should be stored in a suitable container in the
range of 20±15 °C. If the helmet becomes dirty or contaminated, particularly the external
surface, it should be cleaned in accordance with the instructions below. Note, vented
helmets do not meet the EN397 electrical rating.
Inspection
Ensure that the head suspension is always attached to the helmet at the appropriate points
and securely fitted to the head before it is used. Before each use the helmet should be
inspected for cracks, cuts, chemical or mechanical damage and be rejected if these are
discovered. In case of doubt, the helmet shall be destroyed. Ensure that the 3M™ UVicator
™ disc has not turned completely white, as this indicates that the shell is degraded by UV
radiation and the helmet should be replaced.
Fitting
Insert the suspension holders into the helmet grooves (Fig 2). Note that the X5000 is
equipped with a 6-point suspension to comply with the impact requirements of
EN12492:2012. It is important that the headbands are properly tensioned in their
attachments.
Helmet adjustment (Fig 3)
Adjust the nape strap to fit the wearers head correctly. Tighten the nape strap so that the
helmet sits securely. The height of the head suspension can be set at a choice of vertical
height settings for optimum comfort.
Chinstrap
Helmets complying with EN12492 (see Selection) are fitted with a retention system to retain
the helmet on the head. The release buckle of the chinstrap must be engaged correctly.
Before use, ensure the strap under the chin is adequately tightened for optimum security.
To close and open the magnetic buckle see Fig 4
