2.6 Communication
The relay supports different communication protocols: IEC 61850, DNP3.0 Level 2,
Modbus, IEC 104 – all using TCP/IP. DNP3, Modbus, IEC 101 also support serial
communication, PG&E 2179 over serial. Operational information and control are
available through these protocols. However, some communication functionality, for
example, horizontal peer-to-peer communication between the relays and parameters
setting, is only enable by the IEC 61850 communication protocol.
The IEC 61850 communication implementation supports all monitoring and control
functions. Additionally, parameter setting and DFR records can be accessed using the IEC
61850 protocol. Oscillographic files are available to any Ethernet-based application in the
standard COMTRADE format. Further, the relay can send and receive binary signals from
other relays (so called horizontal communication) using the IEC61850-8-1 GOOSE
profile, where the highest performance class with a total transmission time of 3 ms is
supported. Further, the relay supports sending and receiving of analog values using
GOOSE messaging. The relay meets the GOOSE performance requirements for tripping
applications in distribution substations, as defined by the IEC 61850 standard. The relay
can simultaneously report events to five different clients on the station bus.
User authorization is disabled by default but WHMI always uses
authorization.
