A
active negation
Provides better noise immunity on a SCSI bus.
active termination
An active terminator uses one or more voltage regulators to produce the termination voltage, rather than
using resister voltage dividers.
asynchronous data transfer
A method of SCSI data transfer which is not synchronized to a set timing interval. Faster on short cables
than synchronous data transfer, it commonly achieves transfer rates of 2MB/s.
B
basic input/output system (bios)
A motherboard BIOS controls the basic functions of the system such as the keyboard, monitor, etc. The
BIOS on a SCSI card is used to control SCSI disk drives and perform the disk drive boot function.
bus
A pathway for data in a system.
bus mastering
The ability to process SCSI commands on the SCSI card due to its built-in processor without using the
system's CPU.
C
channel
Any path used for the transfer of data and control information between storage devices and a storage
controller or I/O SCSI card. Also refers to one SCSI bus on a disk array controller.
D
device driver
A software program stored on a PC's fixed disk and loaded into memory at boot time that enables a PC to
communicate with peripheral devices such as fixed disk drives and CD-ROM drives.
