Overview

This document is a Quick Start Guide for the ALCATEL ONETOUCH 5038D, providing essential information for setting up, using, and maintaining the device.

Device Overview and Basic Functions

The ALCATEL ONETOUCH 5038D is a mobile communication device designed for high-quality mobile communication. It features a touchscreen interface, along with physical keys for power and volume control. The device includes a front camera, a headset connector, and a micro-USB connector for charging and data transfer.

Keys and Connectors:

  • Power Key: Used to lock/light up the screen, power on/off the device, restart, or activate Airplane mode. Pressing and holding the Power key with the Volume down key captures a screenshot. It also mutes the ringer for incoming calls.
  • Volume Keys: Adjust earpiece or headset volume during calls, media volume in Music/Video/Streaming mode, and mute the ringer for incoming calls. They also light up the screen when it dims during a call.
  • Menu Key: Accesses Settings options. Touching and holding it opens a list of recently used applications.
  • Home Key: Returns to the Home screen from any application or screen.
  • Back Key: Navigates back to the previous screen or closes dialog boxes, options menus, or the notification panel.
  • Headset Connector: For connecting headphones.
  • Micro-USB Connector: For charging the battery and connecting to a computer for data transfer.
  • Speaker and Flashlight: Standard components for audio output and illumination.
  • Camera: For capturing photos and videos.

Getting Started:

  • Removing/Installing the Back Cover: The guide illustrates how to remove and install the back cover to access the SIM card and battery slots.
  • Inserting/Removing SIM Card: The device supports micro-SIM cards. Users must power off the phone before inserting or removing the SIM card to prevent corruption or damage. Inserting other SIM types (mini or nano) may damage the phone.
  • Installing/Removing MicroSD Card: The microSD card slot has a lock. The card should be inserted with the gold contact facing downwards. Powering off the phone before insertion/removal is recommended.
  • Installing/Removing Battery: The battery clicks into place and is secured by the phone cover.
  • Charging the Battery: Connect the charger to the phone and a mains socket. The charging status bar may not appear if the battery is deeply discharged. To conserve energy, disconnect the charger once the battery is full and switch off unused features like Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, or background applications.
  • Powering On/Off: Hold the Power key to turn on the phone. To power off, hold the Power key from the Home screen and select "Power off."
  • First-Time Setup: Upon first power-on, users will configure language, date & time, and Google account settings.

Using the Touchscreen:

  • Touch: To open applications.
  • Touch and Hold: To access options, such as setting wallpaper on the home screen.
  • Drag: To move items on the screen.
  • Slide/Swipe: To scroll through applications, images, or web pages.
  • Flick: Similar to swiping, but faster.
  • Pinch/Spread: To scale elements on the screen.
  • Rotate: Automatically changes screen orientation from portrait to landscape when the phone is turned sideways.

Home Screen and Status Bar:

  • The Home screen can be customized with applications, shortcuts, folders, and widgets. Users can slide horizontally to view different home screens.
  • The Status bar displays phone status (right side) and notification information (left side).
  • Quick Setting Panel: Dragging down the Status bar opens the Quick setting panel, allowing users to enable/disable functions or change modes.
  • Notification Panel: Dragging down the Status bar reveals detailed notifications.
  • Lock/Unlock Screen: Users can protect their phone with patterns, PINs, or passwords.
  • Personalizing Home Screen: Items can be added, repositioned, or removed from the Home screen and Favorite tray. Folders can be created by stacking items. Wallpaper can be customized via the Menu key.
  • Volume Adjustment: Ringer, media, and phone ringtone volumes can be adjusted using the Volume up/down keys or through Settings\Sound.

Text Input and Editing:

  • Onscreen Keyboard: Settings for the Android keyboard are accessible via Settings\Language&input. The keyboard orientation adjusts with the phone's physical orientation.
  • Text Editing: Users can touch and hold or double-tap text to edit, drag to change selection, and use options like "Select all," "Cut," "Copy," and "Paste."

Phone Calls:

  • Placing a Call: Access the Phone application from the home screen, dial a number, or select a contact, then touch to place the call. Numbers can be saved to Contacts.
  • Answering/Rejecting a Call: Drag the icon rightward to answer, leftward to reject, or upward to reject with a preset message. Volume up/down keys or turning the phone face down (if "Turn over to mute" is activated) can mute incoming calls.
  • Call Memory: Access call history (Incoming, Outgoing, Missed calls) via the Dial screen.
  • Speed Dial: Define 2-9 screen keys as speed dialers through the Dial screen settings.

People (Contacts):

  • Adding a Contact: From the Home screen, select "People" and touch the icon to create a new contact.
  • Importing/Exporting/Sharing Contacts: Contacts can be imported/exported from/to SIM card, Phone, Phone storage, or Accounts. Single or all contacts can be selected for import/export. Contacts can be shared via Bluetooth, Gmail, etc.
  • Synchronizing Contacts: Contacts can be synchronized across multiple accounts.

Messaging:

  • Creating/Editing/Receiving SMS/MMS: Access the Messaging feature from the Home screen.
  • Viewing Messages: Touch to view message threads. Touch and hold to delete messages or add shortcuts.
  • Sending Text Messages: Enter recipient numbers or add from contacts, type the message, and touch to send. Long SMS messages (over 160 characters) may be charged as multiple SMS.
  • Sending Multimedia Messages (MMS): SMS automatically converts to MMS when media files (images, videos, audio, slides) or email addresses are added.

Email:

  • Setting Up Accounts: Besides Gmail, external POP3 or IMAP email accounts can be set up. An email wizard guides the process. Manual setup is available for incoming and outgoing settings.
  • Creating/Sending Emails: From the Inbox screen, touch the icon and press "Compose." Enter recipient email addresses, subject, and content. Attach files via the Menu key. Touch to send or "Save draft" to save a copy.

Getting Connected (Internet):

  • GPRS/EDGE/3G: The phone automatically configures network service with a SIM card. Users can check network connection via Settings\More...\Mobile_networks\Access Point Names or Network operators.
  • Wi-Fi: Connect to the Internet within range of a wireless network. Wi-Fi can be used without a SIM card. Turn Wi-Fi on/off via the quick setting panel and connect to detected networks.
  • Browser: Use the Browser to surf the Web. Enter URLs in the address box and touch "Go."
  • Connecting to a Computer: Use a USB cable to transfer media and other files. Enable USB debugging (Settings\About phone, then tap "Build number" 7 times, then Settings\Development\USB debugging) before using MTP or PTP.
  • Sharing Mobile Data Connection: Share the phone's mobile data via USB tethering or as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. These functions may incur additional network charges.

Locating My Location (GPS):

  • Activate GPS via the quick setting panel (Settings\Location). The first GPS fix may take up to 5 minutes, requiring a clear view of the sky. Subsequent fixes are faster.

Data Backup:

  • Back up phone settings and application data to Google Servers with a Google Account. Restored data includes Wi-Fi passwords, bookmarks, installed applications, dictionary words, and settings.

Factory Data Reset:

  • Activating Reset: Via Settings\Backup and reset\Factory data reset\Reset phone\Erase everything. This erases all personal data. Users can choose to "Reserve the content of phone storage."
  • Hard Reset: If the phone cannot power on, press the Volume up key and Power key simultaneously until the screen lights up.

Applications & Internal Storage:

  • Applications: Built-in Google and third-party applications are available for communication, tracking location, and downloading more apps from Google Play Store.
  • Mini APP: Swipe up or down on icons in the Launcher screen to open mini apps for Music, Sound Recorder, Radio, Notes, Message, Call, Mail, Weather, Calendar, Clock.
  • Internal Storage: Settings\Storage displays storage usage. All personal files are saved here. If memory is limited, delete unwanted applications or files.

Making the Most of Your Phone:

  • Software Upgrade: Download software upgrades from www.alcatelonetouch.com.
  • Smart Suite: Includes features for Contact backup, Message management, Calendar sync with Outlook, Gallery for photo/video import and organization, Music management, and Application installation via synchronization.
  • Mobile Upgrade Tool: Download from ALCATEL ONETOUCH website to update phone software. All personal information will be lost, so backup is recommended.
  • FOTA Upgrade: Update software wirelessly via Settings\About phone\System updates. Check for updates, download, and install. Data connection is required.

Safety and Use:

  • Traffic Safety: Avoid using the phone while driving. Do not use headphones while driving in dangerous or forbidden areas. Phone electromagnetic waves can interfere with vehicle electronic systems.
  • Conditions of Use: Switch off the phone periodically for optimal performance, on aircraft, and in health care facilities (unless designated areas). Switch off near gas or flammable liquids. Keep the phone at least 15 cm from medical devices. Hold the phone to the ear on the opposite side to the device. Avoid high volume levels to prevent hearing damage. Do not let children use the phone unsupervised. Handle the phone with care, keep it clean and dust-free.
  • Environmental Conditions: Avoid exposure to moisture, humidity, rain, liquids, dust, or sea air. Recommended operating temperature is -10°C to +55°C. Legibility may be impaired above 55°C.
  • Emergency Calls: May not be reachable on all cellular networks. Do not rely solely on the phone for emergencies.
  • Maintenance: Do not open, dismantle, or repair the phone yourself. Do not drop, throw, or bend it. Do not use if the glass screen is damaged. Do not paint it.
  • Accessories: Use only batteries, chargers, and accessories recommended by TCT Mobile Limited.
  • Backup: Regularly back up important information.
  • Epileptic Seizures/Blackouts: Consult a doctor if experiencing seizures or blackouts from flashing lights or video games. Take precautions: avoid playing when tired, take 15-minute breaks hourly, play in well-lit rooms, play at a distance from the screen, rest if hands/wrists/arms become sore, and see a doctor if soreness persists.
  • Privacy: Respect laws regarding taking photographs and recording sounds. Obtain prior authorization if necessary.
  • Battery Precautions: Do not open, puncture, disassemble, short-circuit, burn, or dispose of batteries in household rubbish. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Use only designed batteries.
  • Collection Points: Products with the recycling symbol should be taken to collection points for recycling.
  • Chargers: Mains powered chargers operate within 0°C to 40°C. Use chargers compliant with safety standards.
  • Radio Waves (SAR): The phone meets government requirements for exposure to radio waves. The SAR limit for mobile devices is 1.6 W/kg (US FCC) or 2 W/kg (ICNIRP). For body-worn operation, maintain a 10 mm separation from the body.

  • Frequency Bands: The phone operates on GSM quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) or UMTS dual-band (900/2100 MHz).
  • Protection Against Theft: The phone is identified by an IMEI (phone serial number). Note this number (*#06#) for police or operator use if the phone is stolen.

Warranty:

  • The phone is warranted for 12 months from the purchase date against defects under normal use. Batteries and accessories are warranted for 6 months.
  • Inform the vendor immediately of any defects. Repairs or replacements may use reconditioned components.
  • Warranty does not cover defects due to non-compliance with instructions, connection to non-recommended equipment, unauthorized modifications, inclement weather, liquids, or file downloads.

Troubleshooting:

  • General Advice: Fully charge the battery, avoid storing large amounts of data, and use factory data reset or upgrade tools for formatting/upgrading. Backup data before these actions.
  • Phone Cannot Switch On/Frozen: Charge for 20 minutes, then try again. If stuck in a power on-off loop, press and hold Volume down to enter Safe Mode. If ineffective, reset using Power key and Volume up, or upgrade software.
  • Phone Unresponsive: Restart by pressing and holding the Power key. Remove/re-insert battery. If still unresponsive, use factory data reset or upgrade software.
  • Phone Turns Off By Itself: Check screen lock, Power key contact, battery charge level. Remove/re-insert battery. If still problematic, use factory data reset or upgrade software.
  • Phone Cannot Charge Properly: Ensure battery is not completely discharged, charging is within 0°C to +40°C, and voltage input is compatible abroad.
  • Cannot Connect to Network/“No Service”: Try another location, verify network coverage with operator, check SIM card validity, manually select network, or try later if overloaded.
  • Cannot Connect to Internet: Check IMEI, internet access service availability, phone's internet settings, network coverage, or try later if overloaded.
  • Invalid SIM Card: Ensure SIM card is correctly inserted, not damaged, and service is available.
  • Unable to Make Outgoing Calls: Dial a valid number, check country/area codes for international calls, network connection, subscription status, and ensure outgoing calls are not barred or airplane mode is off.
  • Unable to Receive Incoming Calls: Ensure phone is switched on, connected to network, check subscription status, and ensure calls are not forwarded.
  • Caller Name/Number Not Appearing: Check subscription to this service with operator or if caller concealed their name/number.
  • Cannot Find Contacts: Ensure SIM card is not broken, inserted properly, and import all contacts to phone.
  • Poor Call Sound Quality: Adjust volume, check network strength, and ensure receiver/speaker is clean.
  • Unable to Use Manual Features: Check subscription with operator or if an ALCATEL ONETOUCH accessory is required.
  • Cannot Dial from Contacts: Ensure number is correctly recorded and country prefix is selected for foreign calls.
  • Cannot Add Contacts: Ensure SIM card contacts are not full; save to phone contacts instead.
  • Callers Cannot Leave Voicemail: Contact network operator.
  • Cannot Access Voicemail: Check voicemail number, try later if network is busy.
  • Unable to Send/Receive MMS: Check phone memory, contact network operator for service availability and MMS parameters.
  • SIM Card PIN Locked: Contact network operator for PUK code.
  • Cannot Connect to Computer: Install Smart Suite, check USB driver, ensure Smart Suite Agent is activated, verify USB debugging is marked, check computer requirements, and use the correct cable.
  • Cannot Download New Files: Ensure sufficient phone memory and check subscription status.
  • Phone Not Detected via Bluetooth: Ensure Bluetooth is on, phone is visible to other users, and both phones are within detection range.
  • Making Battery Last Longer: Follow complete charge time (minimum 2.5 hours), wait 20 minutes after partial charge for accurate indication, adjust screen brightness, extend email auto-check interval, update news/weather manually, exit background apps, and deactivate Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or GPS when not in use.
  • Phone Becomes Warm: Normal during prolonged calls, gaming, internet surfing, or complex applications. Ending these actions will return the phone to normal temperatures.
