This document describes the Alpine CDA-9820XM XM/CD Receiver, an advanced car audio unit designed for enhanced musical selection, versatility, and convenience. It supports various audio sources including XM Radio, CDs, and optional CD changers, and offers a range of sound adjustment and customization features.
The CDA-9820XM serves as a central hub for your in-car audio experience. It features an XM/CD Receiver, allowing you to enjoy satellite radio and compact discs. The unit supports playback of standard audio CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs for audio use. When connected to an MP3 compatible CD changer, it can also play MP3 files from CD-ROMs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs.
The unit provides access to XM Satellite Radio, offering up to 100 digital channels. You can tune into desired XM channels by selecting the band (X1, X2, or X3) and then using the rotary encoder or preset buttons. The unit allows for storing up to 18 XM channels (6 for each band) as presets. A unique feature is the ability to display the XM Radio ID number, which is essential for subscription. You can search for XM programs by Channel Number or Category using the SEARCH/QS button and rotary encoder. The tuning method can be set to either channel number order ("CH NO") or alphabetical channel name order ("ALPHABET"). The XM Auxiliary Data Field display, which shows text information like channel name, artist, and song title, can be toggled on or off. Direct channel access is also possible using an optional remote control with a numeric keypad.
The CDA-9820XM features a built-in CD player. To play a CD, simply insert the disc with the label side facing up, and it will be automatically pulled into the unit. You can select tracks using the track select buttons, fast forward/backward, and pause playback. The unit also offers Repeat Play for single tracks or entire discs, and M.I.X. (Random Play) for shuffling tracks on a disc. Scanning programs allows you to listen to the first 10 seconds of each track. Track Search and Quick Search functions enable you to quickly find and play desired tracks. The unit supports CD Text, displaying disc and track names when connected to a compatible CD text changer.
For traditional radio listening, the unit supports FM1, FM2, and AM bands. You can tune into stations using the TUNE/A.ME button to select between DX SEEK (Distance mode for strong and weak stations), Local mode (for strong stations only), and Manual mode. Up to 18 radio stations (6 for each band) can be manually stored as presets. An Automatic Memory function allows the tuner to seek and store the 6 strongest stations in the selected band. You can also tune to preset stations directly. The Station Title Search function allows you to search for radio stations by their previously entered titles, and a Quick Search function enables searching by frequency.
The CDA-9820XM offers comprehensive sound adjustment capabilities. You can adjust the Balance (left/right) and Fader (front/rear) to optimize sound distribution within the vehicle. The unit includes Bass and Treble controls, allowing you to emphasize or weaken these frequencies. For Bass control, you can set the bass center frequency (60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz) and the bass band width (Q-Factor) from narrow to wide, influencing the range of frequencies boosted. Three different Bass Type settings (TYPE 1-3) are available, with TYPE 1 being ideal for systems with a subwoofer. The MX (Media Xpander) mode enhances vocals and instruments, making music sound clearer by processing medium to high frequencies for FM, CD, MP3/XM, DVD, and AUX sources. The MUTE function instantly lowers the volume by 20 dB.
The unit's display can show various information depending on the source. In XM mode, it cycles through Channel Number, Channel Name, Song Title, Artist Name, Auxiliary Data Field, and Clock. In CD/Changer mode, it displays Track No./Elapsed Time, Track No./Clock, Text (Disc Name), Text (Track Name), and Title. In Radio mode, it shows Frequency, Clock, and Title. For MP3 Changer mode, it displays File No./Elapsed Time, Folder No./File No., File No./Clock, Folder Name, File Name, Track Name, Artist Name, Album Name, and Frame (recording sampling rate and bit rate).
You can input custom titles for your favorite CDs and radio stations, which are then displayed instead of generic information. This feature allows for personalized organization of your media.
To reduce power consumption and enhance sound quality, the unit offers a Blackout mode, which turns off the display. Pressing any button temporarily reactivates the display for 5 seconds to show the operation before returning to blackout.
The CDA-9820XM can connect to external devices. The Subwoofer On and Off setting allows you to enable or disable subwoofer output, with level adjustment available when on. The Scroll Setting (SCR AUTO/SCR MANU) controls how text information scrolls on the display. The Mute Mode On/Off setting allows audio to be automatically muted when an interrupt signal is received from a connected device. The AUX Mode (V-Link) enables input of TV/video sound from external sources via an optional Ai-NET/RCA Interface cable or Versatile Link Terminal. You can also connect to an external amplifier and set Tone Defeat for external devices, bypassing BASS, TREBLE, and MX adjustments for external audio.
When an Ai-NET compatible 6-disc or 12-disc CD Changer is connected, the CDA-9820XM can control its operation. This includes playing MP3 files from compatible changers. Multi-Changer Selection is supported when using a KCA-400C (Multi-Changer Switching device) or KCA-410C (Versatile Link Terminal), allowing control of multiple changers and external AUX outputs. Repeat Play, M.I.X. (Random Play), Scanning Programs, Track Search, File/Folder Search (for MP3 changers), and Quick Search are all available for connected changers. The unit can also be configured to play only CD data or both CD and MP3 data from discs containing both.
With an optional junction box and a compatible portable telephone (Nokia), the unit supports MobileHub™ Link operations. This enables hands-free control of incoming and outgoing calls. Features include receiving incoming calls, setting automatic calling (TEL AUTO/TEL MANU), making calls from the phone's address book (PHONE BK mode), and accessing outgoing/incoming/absent incoming call history. The unit also provides notification for SMS (Short Message Service) messages, though the message content can only be read on the phone's display.
