Overview

This document describes the Alpine CDM-7874, CDE-7872, and CDE-7870 FM/AM Compact Disc Receivers, along with optional Alpine CD Changers.

Function Description

These Alpine units are FM/AM Compact Disc Receivers designed for in-car audio entertainment. They allow users to listen to radio broadcasts and play audio CDs. The CDM-7874 model also supports an optional CD Changer, expanding the disc playback capabilities.

Radio Operation: The units feature both manual and automatic seek tuning for radio stations. Users can store their favorite stations into preset memories, with a total of 24 stations (6 for FM1, 6 for FM2, 6 for AM, and 6 for D.A.P. - Direct Access Preset). The D.A.P. band allows for a combination of radio stations from any band to be manually preset. The tuner can operate in DX (Distance) mode to tune in both strong and weak stations during auto-seek, or in local mode to tune only strong stations.

CD Player Operation: The built-in CD player accepts one disc at a time for playback. It supports standard audio CDs, CD-Rs (CD-Recordable), and CD-RWs (CD-ReWritable). The player automatically draws the disc into the compartment when inserted correctly. Playback features include normal play, pause, music sensor (skip), fast forward and backward, repeat play (track or all discs with a changer), M.I.X. (random play), and program scanning (playing the first 10 seconds of each track).

CD Changer Control (CDM-7874 only): When an optional Alpine 6-disc CD Changer is connected, the CDM-7874 can control its functions. Users can select specific discs from the changer for playback, and the CD player's operational features (like repeat and random play) extend to the changer's discs.

Audio Features:

  • Volume/Balance/Fader: Users can adjust the overall volume, balance between left and right speakers, and fader between front and rear speakers.
  • Loudness (CDE-7872/CDE-7870 only): This feature provides low- and high-frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound.
  • Audio Mute: Instantly lowers the volume level by 20 dB.
  • BBE Mode (CDM-7874 only): The Barcus Berry Electronics processor corrects phase distortion in loudspeakers, improving sound reproduction accuracy.
  • Bass Control: Allows users to change the bass frequency emphasis by selecting a bass center frequency (60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz), adjusting the bass band width (Q-Factor) from wide to narrow, and setting the bass level (-7 to +7). These settings are memorized individually for each source (FM, AM, CD).
  • Treble Control: Similar to bass control, users can adjust the treble frequency emphasis by selecting a treble center frequency (10kHz, 12.5kHz, 15kHz, 17.5kHz) and setting the treble level (-7 to +7). These settings are also memorized individually for each source.
  • Subwoofer On/Off (CDM-7874 only): Allows users to enable or disable subwoofer output and adjust its level. When off, output is from the rear speakers; when on, output is from the subwoofer.
  • AUX Mode (CDM-7874 only): Enables input of TV/video sound by connecting an optional M-Bus V-Link cable. When AUX ON is selected, a CD Changer cannot be used.

Display Features: The units can display the current radio frequency, CD track number and elapsed time, or the clock time. The CDM-7874 also offers different audio level display patterns, including a Volume indicator, Audio Level indicator, and a Bass engine display showing settings for Bass center frequency, Bass band width, and Bass level.

Usage Features

Detachable Front Panel: The front panel is detachable for security. To detach, press the POWER button for 3 seconds to turn off the unit, then press the release button to pop out the panel. To attach, insert the right side first, align the holes with projections, and push the left side until it locks. A carrying case is provided for protection.

Initial System Start-Up: After installation or power application, the unit must be initialized by pressing the RESET switch located behind the detachable front panel.

Power On/Off: Press the POWER button to turn the unit on. The volume gradually increases to the last listened level. Pressing POWER for more than 3 seconds turns the unit off. The very first time power is turned on, the volume starts at level 12, BBE is on (tuner mode for CDM-7874), and LOUD function is on (CDE-7872/CDE-7870).

Setting Time: While the clock time is displayed, press and hold the CLK button for 3 seconds. The time indication will blink. Use the ZERO button to set seconds to "0", HOUR button to adjust hours, and MIN button to adjust minutes.

Disc Handling:

  • Insert discs with the label side facing up.
  • Only one disc can be loaded at a time.
  • Three-inch (8cm) CDs can be used.
  • Do not force discs in or out.
  • If a new disc is ejected after initial loading, check for small bumps or irregularities around the center hole and outer edge, and rub them smooth with a ball-point pen.
  • Use only round discs; special shape discs may damage the mechanism.
  • Avoid commercially available disc accessories that alter disc thickness or diameter.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • If the unit experiences problems, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Return it to an authorized Alpine dealer or the nearest Alpine Service Station for servicing.
  • If the internal micro-computer malfunctions due to interference noise, press the RESET switch with a pointed object.

Disc Cleaning:

  • Fingerprints, dust, or soil on the disc surface can cause skipping.
  • For routine cleaning, wipe the playing surface with a clean, soft cloth from the center to the outer edge.
  • For heavily soiled discs, dampen a clean, soft cloth with a mild neutral detergent solution before cleaning.

Disc Care:

  • Do not touch the disc surface.
  • Do not expose discs to direct sunlight.
  • Do not affix stickers or labels, and do not write on the disc surface.
  • Ensure there are no bumps around the disc.
  • Do not leave discs in the car or the unit for a long time, as heat and humidity can damage them.

Installation Precautions:

  • Ensure the unit is installed in a location not subjected to direct sun/heat, high humidity/water, excessive dust, or excessive vibrations.
  • The detachable front panel should not be exposed to rain/water, dropped, or subjected to shock.
  • Always disconnect the cable from the negative battery post before installation to prevent short-circuits.
  • Connect color-coded leads according to the diagram to avoid malfunction or damage to the vehicle's electrical system.
  • Do not tap into factory-installed electrical components for power.
  • Ensure the fuse for the intended circuit has the appropriate amperage.
  • Connect speaker (-) leads to speaker (-) terminals; never connect left and right channel speaker cables to each other or to the vehicle body.
  • Use specified accessory parts and install them securely.
  • Route wiring away from moving parts or sharp metal edges to prevent crimping or damage. Use rubber grommets if wiring passes through metal holes.
  • Avoid installing the unit in locations with high moisture or dust to prevent product failure.
  • Do not use bolts or nuts from brake or steering systems for ground connections.
  • Do not install in locations that hinder vehicle operation (e.g., steering wheel, gearshift).
  • It is recommended to have wiring and installation done by experts due to the special technical skill and experience required.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for various issues, including:

  • No function or display (ignition off, improper power connections, blown fuse, micro-computer malfunction).
  • Radio reception problems (no antenna, weak signal, improper grounding, incorrect antenna length).
  • Noisy radio broadcast (incorrect antenna length or poor grounding).
  • CD player/changer not functioning (out of operating temperature range, moisture condensation, CD insertion issues, damaged CD, skipping due to vibration or dirty/scratched disc, dirty pick-up lens).
  • Error displays (HI TEMP, ERROR, NO DISC, NO MAGZN). For mechanical errors or persistent issues, users are advised to consult their Alpine dealer.

Noise Prevention:

  • Locate the unit and route leads at least 10cm away from the car harness.
  • Keep battery power leads as far away from other leads as possible.
  • Connect the ground lead securely to a bare metal spot on the car chassis.
  • If adding an optional noise suppressor, connect it as far away from the unit as possible.
  • Consult an Alpine dealer for noise prevention measures.
