Overview

This document provides installation instructions for an Amana Undercounter Dishwasher.

Function Description:

The Amana Undercounter Dishwasher is designed to clean dishes and is intended for installation under a kitchen countertop. It requires proper connections to drain, water, and electrical outlets for operation. The installation process involves preparing the location, roughing in electrical and water lines, connecting the drain, making final water and electrical connections, leveling and anchoring the unit, and finally, running a test cycle before replacing the kickplate.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Supply: The dishwasher operates on a 120 volt, 60 Hz electrical supply. It requires a separate circuit with a fuse or circuit breaker rated for at least 15 amps (20 amps if connected with a disposer), but not more than 20 amps. The unit has copper lead wires, and if connecting to aluminum building wire, a qualified electrician must perform the connection using UL-recognized materials.
  • Water Supply: A hot water supply line is required. Copper tubing must have a minimum 3/8" outer diameter, or high-pressure and high-temperature rated plastic tubing with a minimum inner diameter of 1/4" may be used. A shut-off valve installed outside the dishwasher cabinet is recommended. Soldering should not occur within 6" of the water inlet valve to prevent damage to plastic parts. The water inlet valve has a 3/8" NPT female fitting.
  • Drain Connection: The drain hose is furnished with the unit and should not be removed from the side of the dishwasher. Local codes may require an air gap kit (not included) if connecting to a sink trap. The drain hose can connect to a sink drain, a disposer, or a separate trap. If connecting to a disposer, the knock-out plug must be removed from inside the disposer inlet. The drain hose should be secured with a clamp and routed to prevent kinks or sharp bends.
  • Dimensions (Cabinet and Supply):
    • Minimum cabinet opening height: 34 1/4"
    • Minimum cabinet opening width: 24 1/4"
    • Depth from front to rear of water inlet valve: 16 3/8"
    • Height from floor to water inlet valve: 3 3/4"
    • Depth from front to rear of junction box: 17 3/4"
    • Electrical, water, and drain lines must be confined to a shaded area within the cabinet, which is approximately 18" high and 7 1/2" deep from the rear wall, extending 3" from the bottom.
    • If installed in a corner, a minimum 2" side clearance is needed to open the dishwasher door.
  • Anchoring: The dishwasher must be secured to prevent tipping. It can be anchored to the countertop using provided screws and mounting brackets, or to the floor using 1/4" lag screws (not included) or expansion fasteners for concrete floors. The dishwasher MUST rest on the floor and not hang from the countertop.
  • Leveling: The unit features front and rear leveling legs that can be adjusted using a 3/16" socket wrench. A chart provides estimated turns for various cabinet opening heights (e.g., 0 turns for 34", 9 turns for 34 1/2").

Usage Features:

  • Installation Location: The dishwasher should be located where there is easy access to drain, water, and electrical lines, ideally on either side of the kitchen sink.
  • Motor Clearance: Any carpet in the installation area must be removed to provide adequate motor clearance. The floor should be flat and free of obstructions.
  • Cooktop Restriction: The dishwasher should NOT be installed under a cooktop, as this can cause damage.
  • Door Operation: After installation and anchoring, the door should open and close smoothly without hitting surrounding cabinets or the countertop.
  • Kickplate: The kickplate assembly is removed during installation and replaced after the unit has been verified to operate correctly.
  • Water Inlet Valve Filter Screen: The water line should be flushed before connecting to the water inlet valve to prevent clogging of the filter screen. If the valve clogs, the filter screen can be cleaned by removing four screws at the inlet end of the valve.
  • Water Inlet Valve Protection: The water inlet valve must be protected from freezing. If the valve freezes and ruptures, flooding may occur.
  • Drain Hose Inspection: The drain hose should be free of sharp bends or kinks that could restrict drain flow. It should also not contact any sharp edges or electrical components.
  • Leak Checks: After connecting water lines, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. During the first fill and pump-out cycle, verify that water completely covers the filter surface and that all water is pumped out, and re-check for leaks at water connections.
  • Electrical Safety: All wiring connections must be enclosed in the junction box. A UL-listed strain-relief bushing (not included) is required at the junction box to stabilize wiring. Electrical power must be disconnected at the fuse box or circuit breaker before beginning any electrical installation work. The dishwasher must be permanently grounded.
  • Corrugated Drain Hose: The corrugated drain hose should not be cut.
  • Over-tightening: Avoid over-tightening the 90° elbow into the water inlet valve to prevent bending of the bracket or breaking of the valve. Also, be careful not to over-tighten the clamp securing the drain hose to prevent damage to the hose end.
