Overview

The provided manual describes the American Flame AF-LMF Series Valve Kits, a safety valve system designed for vented gas logs. These kits are intended for use with 18 to 30-inch gas log sets and provide a safe, reliable, and user-friendly remote control system for gas heating appliances. Optional LP conversion kits (LPK-18, LPK-24) with pilot orifices are available.

Function Description:

The AF-LMF series valve kits regulate gas flow to a gas log set, ensuring safe operation. They feature a standing pilot that must be lit manually. Once the pilot is lit, the main burner can be ignited either manually or via a remote control, depending on the specific model. The system includes safety features such as a thermocouple to ensure the pilot flame is present before allowing main burner operation, and a damper stop to prevent the flue from fully closing, ensuring proper ventilation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: AF-LMF, AF-LMF-R, AF-LMF-RV, AF-LMF-RVS.
  • Fuel Sources: Designed to operate with Liquid Propane or Natural Gas.
  • Gas Supply: Requires a gas supply line less than 1/2 psi with an individual manual shut-off.
  • Electrical Power (for remote models): Receivers require four AA 1.5V alkaline batteries. Transmitters require a 12V battery.
  • Gas Connections: Inlet/outlet gas connections are 3/8" flared fittings, with a UR3-68 adapter provided to convert to 1/2" flared fitting if needed.
  • Pilot Assembly: Mounts to the burner pan, holding the pilot at a 45-degree position.
  • Clearances: Minimum 2-inch clearance from the burner grate to the valve kit box. The valve kit must be located to the side and front of the burner grate, never directly behind it.
  • Damper Stop: Included to prevent the flue damper from fully closing, allowing pilot exhaust to vent outdoors.

Usage Features:

  • Manual ON/OFF (AF-LMF): A basic model with a manual gas control knob for pilot and main burner operation.
  • Manual ON/OFF with Solenoid and ON/OFF Remote Control (AF-LMF-R): Allows manual pilot lighting and ON/OFF control of the main burner via a remote transmitter.
  • Manual ON/OFF with Motor Drive and ON/OFF (Hi/Lo) Remote Control (AF-LMF-RV): Features manual pilot lighting and remote control with Hi/Lo flame adjustment.
  • Manual ON/OFF with Step Motor and ON/OFF (Hi/Med/Lo) Remote Control (AF-LMF-RVS): Offers manual pilot lighting and remote control with Hi/Med/Lo flame adjustment.
  • Remote Receiver: Placed next to the valve kit, away from direct heat. Features a 3-position slide switch (ON, REMOTE, OFF) to control system operation. The "REMOTE" position enables transmitter control, "ON" keeps the system on continuously, and "OFF" completely shuts down the system and disables remote control.
  • Learning Transmitter to Receiver: A "LEARN" button on the receiver allows it to accept the unique security code of a transmitter, enabling remote control functionality.
  • Pilot Lighting Procedure: Involves pushing and holding the gas control knob in the PILOT position for approximately 60 seconds until a strong pilot flame is present, then releasing and verifying the pilot remains lit.
  • Main Burner Ignition: After the pilot is lit, the main burner can be ignited by turning the gas control knob to the ON position (for manual models) or pressing the ON button on the remote transmitter (for remote models).
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes the importance of professional installation, proper ventilation (flue open, solid doors open), and never operating the system with glass fireplace enclosures closed. It also warns against overheating the valve kit and using incorrect orifices.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Check-up: The system should be checked once a year by a qualified serviceman for proper operation of the valve, pilot, switch, damper, burner, and gas connections.
  • Troubleshooting Pilot Issues:
    • Pilot will not stay lit: Check thermocouple heat-up time (30-60 seconds), snugness of the thermocouple connection to the gas valve, cleanliness of the thermocouple (wipe off soot/dust), and consider replacing the thermocouple or entire pilot assembly if necessary.
    • Pilot flame size: The pilot flame can be adjusted using the pilot adjustment screw located behind the front cover of the valve box. Clockwise decreases flame, counter-clockwise increases flame.
  • Troubleshooting Remote Issues:
    • Remote will not light burner: Verify pilot is lit, control knob is in the ON position, transmitter is "LEARNED" to the receiver, receiver slide switch is in the "REMOTE" position, and check battery voltage in both the receiver (total > 5.3V) and transmitter (12V > 9V, correctly installed).
  • Warranty: American Flame provides a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase or installation against defects in materials and workmanship. Damage due to accident, misuse, abuse, or installation error is not covered.
