Overview

This document provides installation, care, and maintenance instructions for the American Standard Cadet® 3 two-piece toilets, including both 1.6 GPF (Gallons Per Flush) and 1.28 GPF FloWise™ models.

Function Description:

The Cadet® 3 is a two-piece toilet system designed for efficient flushing. It consists of a bowl and a tank, which are assembled during installation. The toilet utilizes a gravity-fed flushing system, with water stored in the tank and released into the bowl to clear waste. The FloWise™ models are designed for water conservation, using less water per flush. The system includes a fill valve to replenish water in the tank after each flush and a flush valve with a flapper mechanism to initiate the flush.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models Covered:
    • 1.6 GPF: 2383 / 2384 / 2386 / 2447 / 2431 / 2880 / 3305 / 2852

    • 10 inches (254mm) for models 2383.010, 2384.010, 2386.010, 3379.128
    • 12 inches (305mm) for models 2383.012, 2829.128, 2386.012, 2832.128, 2384.012, 2835.128, 3305.000, 2838.128, 2431.012, 2852.000, 2447.000, 2852.128, 2880.000, 2447.128, 3377.128, 2880.128, 3378.128, 3329.128, 3339.128
    • 14 inches (356mm) for models 2383.014, 2384.014, 2386.014
  • Minimum Supply Pressure: Normal supply pressure must be at least 20 psi.
  • Water Level Adjustment: The critical water level mark ("C.L.") in the tank must be 1 inch above the overflow pipe. Water level is adjusted by turning the WATER LEVEL ADJUSTMENT ROD and moving the FLOAT CUP up or down.
  • Tank Mounting: For Speed Connect System, tank mounting bolts are pre-installed. A large rubber gasket ensures a seal between the tank and bowl.
  • Water Supply Connection: Various connection types are supported, including metal/copper flared tubing, metal flanged tubing, metal spiral tubing, and vinyl/braided connectors. Specific washers and nuts are required for each type.

Usage Features:

  • Two-Piece Design: Allows for easier handling and installation compared to one-piece toilets.
  • Efficient Flushing System: Designed to effectively clear waste with either 1.6 GPF or 1.28 GPF, depending on the model.
  • Water Conservation (FloWise™ models): The 1.28 GPF models contribute to reduced water usage.
  • Adjustable Water Level: Users can fine-tune the water level in the tank to optimize flush performance and water usage.
  • Adjustable Lift Chain: If the bowl fails to siphon, the lift chain can be adjusted to ensure proper flapper operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Use mild, soapy water, rinse thoroughly with clear water, and dry with a soft cloth.
    • WARNING: Avoid detergents, disinfectants, or cleaning products in aerosol cans. NEVER use abrasive scouring powders or abrasive pads on the toilet seat, as they can damage the finish.
    • WARNING: Do not use in-tank cleaners, especially those containing chlorine (calcium hypochlorite), as they can seriously damage tank fittings, leading to leaks and property damage. American Standard is not responsible for damage caused by such cleaners.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a comprehensive guide for common issues:
    • Does not flush: Check supply valve, supply line blockage, flush valve chain, or debris in water control.
    • Poor or sluggish flush: Check bowl water level, supply valve, trapway/drain pipe/vent, or supply pressure.
    • Toilet leaks: Review supply line connection and bowl-to-tank/floor connection.
    • Toilet does not shut off: Check flush valve chain, worn flapper/seat, or debris in water control.
  • Fill Valve Maintenance (Fluidmaster 400A Inlet):
    • If the fill valve leaks slowly or turns off and on during non-use periods, it indicates a problem.
    • To clear sand and rust: Turn off water supply, remove the valve top by lifting the arm and rotating 1/8 turn counterclockwise, pressing down slightly. Briefly turn water supply on and off over a container, then replace the top by rotating 1/8 turn clockwise until locked.
    • If the fill valve won't turn on or shut off, or refill is slow, a Fluidmaster Model 242 Replacement Seal may be needed.
  • Repair Parts List: A detailed list of replacement parts is provided, categorized by 1.6 GPF and 1.28 GPF models, including tank levers, bolt cap kits, fill valves, flush valves, flapper assemblies, refill tubes, and tank covers. This allows for easy identification and ordering of necessary components.
  • Water Supply Connection Warning: Do not use plumber's putty, pipe dope, or any other sealant on the water supply connection to the tank. If leaks persist after hand tightening, replace the supply line or the fill valve. Warranty is void if sealant is used on the water supply connection.
