Overview

The ANSUL Water Oscillating Monitor is a mechanical device designed for fire suppression, specifically for use with ANSUL WOM-3 and WOM-4 models. It is intended for those who install, operate, maintain, or service these monitors. The device requires periodic care, with maintenance recommended every six months or more frequently if desired, to ensure effective operation. Discharge testing should be conducted at intervals in accordance with end-user policies or the authority having jurisdiction, whichever is stricter.

Function Description:

The Water Oscillating Monitor is designed to discharge water or foam in an oscillating pattern for fire suppression. It features an oscillating mechanism that allows the monitor to sweep a specified arc, providing broad coverage. The monitor's elevation can also be adjusted to direct the stream effectively. It can operate in both automatic oscillation mode and manual operation mode. In automatic mode, the monitor oscillates automatically at set limits when the main water supply is turned on. In manual mode, the oscillating mechanism can be disengaged, allowing the monitor to be rotated manually using a tiller bar (WOM-3) or handwheel (WOM-4) and its elevation adjusted.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Inlet Pressure: 150 psi (1034 kPa) for the water oscillating monitor.
  • Inlet Flange: 4-inch flat-faced inlet flange with an 8-hole bolting pattern. It must be mated to a 150 lb flange (with gasket) matching the monitor inlet flange. Cast iron flanges are NOT ACCEPTABLE. Secure monitor to flange using 5/8 inch cadmium-plated or stainless steel bolts, washers, and nuts (supplied by others).
  • Oscillation Arc:
    • WOM-3: 0° through 200°
    • WOM-4: 0° through 165°
  • Elevation Clearance:
    • WOM-3: 30° below horizontal, 60° above horizontal.
    • WOM-4: 24° below horizontal, 90° above horizontal.
  • Dimensions (approximate):
    • WOM-3:
      • Height: 11 1/2 in. (30 cm) to 13 in. (33 cm) from base.
      • Width: 5 3/4 in. (14.6 cm).
      • Length: 32 5/8 in. (82.9 cm).
      • Nozzle Extension: 12 1/8 in. (30.8 cm) from the oscillating mechanism.
      • Elevation Coupling Grease Fitting: Located on the top of the monitor.
      • Speed Ball Handle: For elevation adjustment.
      • AFN-1 Nozzle (typical).
    • WOM-4:
      • Height: 30 3/4 in. (78.1 cm) total, 24 3/8 in. (61.9 cm) to the top of the oscillating mechanism.
      • Width: 5 3/4 in. (14.6 cm).
      • Length: 32 5/8 in. (82.9 cm).
      • Nozzle Extension: 16 3/8 in. (41.6 cm) from the oscillating mechanism.
      • Elevation Handwheel: For elevation adjustment.
      • AFN-2 Nozzle (typical).
  • Support Stand (Part No. 400987):
    • Mounting Holes: 1/2 in. diameter (8 places).
    • Dimensions: 27 1/2 in. (69.9 cm) length, 20 1/4 in. (51.4 cm) width, 11 1/2 in. (29.2 cm) height to top plate, 26 1/8 in. (66.4 cm) total height.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Requires flushing the supply pipe before connection to remove loose particles. Proper clearance must be ensured for monitor oscillation and elevation to prevent injury or damage to structures. The monitor must be secured to a 150 lb flange with appropriate bolts, washers, and nuts. An ANSUL Support Stand or other added support may be required to absorb operating force.
  • Operation Modes:
    • Automatic Oscillation: Simply turn on the main water supply. The monitor will oscillate within its pre-set limits.
    • Manual Operation: To operate manually, the selector valve handle must be turned to the "TEST/MANUAL" position. The release pin is pulled to disengage the oscillating mechanism, allowing manual rotation via the tiller bar (WOM-3) or handwheel (WOM-4).
  • Elevation Adjustment:
    • WOM-3: Loosen the speed ball handle, raise or lower the tiller bar, then retighten the speed ball handle.
    • WOM-4: Turn the handwheel clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower.
  • Oscillation Speed Control: The speed of oscillation can be adjusted using a control screw located on the right side of the enclosure. This can be done in "test mode" (using a garden hose) or under actual operating conditions. Clockwise rotation decreases speed, counterclockwise increases speed.
  • Oscillation Arc Adjustment: The arc of oscillation can be adjusted by manipulating front and rear adjustment nuts on threaded rods within the oscillating mechanism. This involves manually rotating the monitor to desired stop positions and adjusting the end-stop tubes.
  • Safety Warnings: Monitor rotation is forceful and can cause injury if a person is trapped between the monitor and stationary structures. Ensure sufficient clearance. The discharge stream can also cause severe personal injury; do not operate when personnel are in the path of the stream. The oscillating mechanism contains moving parts that can cause severe personal injury; do not operate with the cover removed from the enclosure.

Maintenance Features:

  • Periodic Maintenance: Recommended every six months or more frequently.
  • Monitor Testing: Procedures include connecting a garden hose to the oscillating mechanism, turning the selector valve to "TEST/MANUAL," checking oscillation within limits, adjusting speed or arc if necessary, and then returning the selector valve to "RUN" position. Manual rotation checks for free movement and allows for grease application.
  • Filter Element Cleaning: The filter element, located on the right side of the oscillating mechanism enclosure, should be cleaned by unscrewing the hex plug, removing the gasket and bronze filter element, cleaning with pressurized air or water, and then reinstalling.
  • Lubrication:
    • Oscillating Mechanism: Apply Dow Corning #4 Silicone Grease to the open ports on the underside of the oscillating valve during testing. Lubricate sparingly with monolithium grease at the grease fittings on the left side of the enclosure.
    • Chain and Sprockets: Lubricate with monolithium grease.
    • Monitor Base and Elevation Couplings: Lubricate with monolithium grease. For WOM-3, the monitor must be rotated approximately 90° to the right to access the base coupling grease fitting.
  • Chain Tightening: If the chain requires tightening, a washer can be removed from between the clevis assembly and chassis to increase tension.
  • Winterizing Procedure: To protect the monitor from freezing, a solution of 50% ethylene glycol antifreeze and 50% water should be circulated through the system. This involves manually rotating the monitor, connecting a garden hose to draw in the antifreeze solution, and cycling the selector valve to ensure the solution discharges from the four-way valve. This procedure must be repeated after every use or test operation with water.
  • After Use Procedures: After any operation, the monitor should be returned to standby position by turning off the water supply, realigning the release pin to engage the oscillating mechanism, returning the selector valve to "RUN" position, adjusting the monitor to its desired elevation, cleaning the filter element, and replacing any broken or missing visual inspection seals.
