orignitionrisks.“NoSmoking”signsshallbedisplayed.
6. Ventilated area
Ensurethattheareaisintheopenorthatitisadequatelyventilatedbeforebreakinginto
thesystemorconductinganyhotwork.Adegreeofventilationshallcontinueduringthe
periodthattheworkiscarriedout.Theventilationshouldsafelydisperseanyreleased
refrigerantandpreferablyexpelitexternallyintotheatmosphere.
7. Checks to the refrigeration equipment
Whereelectricalcomponentsarebeingchanged,theyshallbetforthepurposeandto
thecorrectspecication.Atalltimesthemanufacturer’smaintenanceandserviceguide-
lines shall be followed. If in doubt consult the manufacturer’stechnicaldepartment for
assistance.
Thefollowingchecksshallbeappliedtoinstallationsusingammablerefrigerants:
- the charge size is in accordance with the room size within which the refrigerant con-
tainingpartsareinstalled;
- theventilationmachineryandoutletsareoperatingadequatelyandarenotobstructed;
8. Checks to electrical devices
Repairandmaintenancetoelectricalcomponentsshallincludeinitialsafetychecksand
component inspection procedures. If a fault exists that could compromise safety, then no
electricalsupplyshallbeconnectedtothecircuituntilitissatisfactorilydealtwith.Ifthe
faultcannot becorrectedimmediatelybutitisnecessarytocontinueoperation,anad-
equatetemporarysolutionshallbeused.Thisshallbereportedtotheowneroftheequip-
ment so all parties are advised.
lnitialsafetychecksshallinclude:
- thatcapacitorsaredischarged:thisshallbedoneinasafemannertoavoidpossibility
ofsparking;
- that there no live electrical components and wiring are exposed while charging, recov-
eringorpurgingthesystem;
- thatthereiscontinuityofearthbonding
9. Repairs to sealed components
Duringrepairstosealedcomponents,allelectricalsuppliesshallbedisconnectedfromthe
equipmentbeingworkeduponpriortoanyremovalofsealedcovers,etc.Ifitisabsolutely
necessarytohaveanelectricalsupplytoequipmentduringservicing,thenapermanently
operatingformofleakdetectionshallbelocatedatthemostcriticalpointtowarnofapo-
tentially hazardous situation.
Particularattentionshallbepaidtothefollowingtoensurethatbyworkingonelectrical
components,thecasingisnotalteredinsuchawaythatthelevelofprotectionisaect-
ed.Thisshallincludedamagetocables,excessivenumberofconnections,terminalsnot
madetooriginalspecication,damagetoseals,incorrectttingofglands,etc.
Ensure that apparatus is mounted securely.
Ensure that seals or sealing materials have not degraded such that they no longer serve
thepurposeofpreventingtheingressofammableatmospheres.Replacementpartsshall
beinaccordancewiththemanufacturer’sspecications,
NOTETheuseofsiliconsealantmayinhibittheeectivenessofsometypesofleakdetec-
tionequipment.lntrinsicallysafecomponentsdonothavetobeisolatedpriortoworking
on them.
