18. Recovery
When removing refrigerant from a system, either for servicing or decommissioning, it is
recommended good practice that all refrigerants are removed safely.
When transferring refrigerant into cylinders, ensure that only appropriate refrigerant recov-
erycylindersareemployed.Ensurethatthecorrectnumberofcylindersforholdingtheto-
talsystemchargeareavailable.AIIcylinderstobeusedaredesignatedfortherecovered
refrigerantandlabelledforthatrefrigerant(i.e.specialcylinders
fortherecoveryofrefrigerant).Cylindersshallbecompletewithpressurereliefvalveand
associatedshut-o󰀨valvesingoodworkingorder.Emptyrecoverycylindersareevacuated
and,ifpossible,cooledbeforerecoveryoccurs.
Therecoveryequipmentshallbe in goodworkingorderwitha set ofinstructionscon-
cerningtheequipmentthatisathandandshallbesuitablefortherecoveryofammable
refrigerants.
Inaddition,aset of calibrated weighingscalesshallbeavailable and ingoodworking
order.Hosesshallbecompletewithleak-freedisconnectcouplingsandingoodcondition.
Beforeusingtherecoverymachine,checkthatitisinsatisfactoryworkingorder,hasbeen
properly maintained and that any associated electrical components are sealed to prevent
ignitionintheeventofarefrigerantrelease.Consultmanufacturerifindoubt.
Therecoveredrefrigerantshallbereturnedtotherefrigerantsupplierinthecorrectrecov-
erycylinder,andtherelevantWasteTransferNotearranged.Donotmixrefrigerantsin
recovery units and especially not in cylinders.
lfcompressorsorcompressoroilsaretoberemoved,ensurethattheyhavebeenevacu-
atedtoanacceptableleveltomakecertainthatammablerefrigerantdoesnotremain
withinthelubricant.Theevacuationprocessshallbecarriedoutpriortoreturningthecom-
pressortothesuppliers.Onlyelectricheatingtothecompressorbodyshallbeemployed
toacceleratethisprocess.Whenoilisdrainedfromasystem,itshallbecarriedoutsafely.’

21. Storage of equipment/appliances
Thestorageofequipmentshouldbeinaccordancewiththemanufacturer’sinstructions.

Storagepackageprotectionshouldbeconstructedsuchthatmechanicaldamagetothe
equipmentinsidethepackagewillnotcausealeakoftherefrigerantcharge.
Themaximumnumberofpiecesofequipmentpermittedtobestoredtogetherwillbede-
terminedbylocalregulations.
