Do you have a question about the ATAGO PR-50HO and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The ATAGO PR-50HO is a digital refractometer designed for measuring the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. This manual provides comprehensive information on its function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The PR-50HO is a portable digital refractometer that utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for data transmission. Its primary function is to accurately measure the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in a sample, displaying the result along with the temperature. The device stores up to 100 measurement data points with time stamps, which can be accessed via Android devices, iPhones, or PC-linked USB NFC Reader/Writers (conforming to PC/SC specification). The instrument features an automatic temperature compensation (ATC) function, ensuring accurate readings within a specified temperature range.

  • Conformity: EMC Directive 2004/108/EC.

Usage Features

The PR-50HO is designed for straightforward operation with several key features:

  • Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): Shows measurement values, temperature, and remaining battery charge.
  • Sample Stage: The prism, located at the center, is where the sample is dripped for measurement.
  • ZERO Setting Button: Used for zero setting the unit.
  • START/OFF Button: Initiates measurement. Holding it for over 2 seconds turns the device off.
  • Battery Cover: Allows for easy battery insertion and replacement.
  • Zero Setting: Essential before daily use or if ambient temperature changes significantly. It's also required after battery replacement. The process involves cleaning the prism, applying tap water (min. 0.1mL), pressing the START/OFF button, and then pressing the ZERO setting button if the display is not 0.0%.
  • Measurement on Sample: After zero setting, clean the prism, apply the sample (min. 0.1mL), completely cover the prism surface, and press the START/OFF button. The measurement value will be displayed.
  • Data Transmission Function: Stores up to 100 measurement results with time stamps. This data can be transferred to Android devices, iPhones, or PCs equipped with an NFC reader/writer. The function can be toggled ON/OFF by pressing and holding the ZERO button for approximately 5 seconds, then using the ZERO button to select ON/OFF, and finally pressing the START/OFF button to confirm.
  • Software Installation: For Android devices/iPhones, the "ATAGO Logger (NFC)" app is required. For PC/USB NFC Reader/Writer, the "ATAGO Logger (NFC)" software is needed, available from the ATAGO website.
  • Date and Time Setting: The device allows setting the year, month, date, and time. This is done by pressing the START/OFF and ZERO buttons simultaneously for more than 2 seconds, then using the ZERO button to change values and the START/OFF button to confirm.
  • Data History Readout: Data can be read out by positioning the device's NFC logo over the NFC reader of an Android device/iPhone or by placing the device in contact with a PC-linked USB NFC Reader/Writer.
  • Delete Data History: All 100 records can be deleted by a specific button sequence: while pressing the START/OFF button, press the ZERO button twice, then quickly release the START/OFF button. Pressing the START/OFF button again confirms deletion, while pressing the ZERO button cancels it.
  • ELI Function (External Light Interference): If "nnn" is displayed during measurement due to direct light or strong outdoor sunlight, cover the sample stage and press the START/OFF button again.
  • Powering Off: The instrument automatically turns off after approximately 30 seconds of inactivity. It can also be manually turned off by holding the START/OFF button for more than 2 seconds. The backlight stays on for 15 seconds after any button is pressed.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and accuracy of the PR-50HO:

  • Prism Cleaning: After each measurement, completely wipe off any sample from the prism surface and surrounding area with tissue paper soaked in water, then dry with dry tissue paper.
  • General Cleaning: If the instrument becomes dirty, wipe it with a soft cloth. Do not use benzine, paint thinner, or similar solvents.
  • Battery Handling: Use only specified alkaline batteries (006P, 9V). Pay attention to polarity during insertion. Protect battery poles with insulating tape when storing or disposing to prevent short circuits. Do not heat, short-circuit, burn, or disassemble batteries.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate and store the instrument between 5 to 40°C and below 90%RH humidity. Avoid direct sunlight, heating units, sudden temperature changes, strong vibrations, dusty environments, extremely low temperatures, and damp places. Do not place heavy objects on the instrument.
  • Storage: When transporting, place the instrument in its original box.
  • Case Durability: The ABS resin case can crack if exposed to steam or damaged by certain solvents (e.g., Aqua regia, Chromic acid, Chloroform, Acetone, Benzine, Xylene). Keep the instrument away from steam and avoid contact with these solvents.
  • Prism Protection: The prism is made of optical glass; do not tap or contact its surface with metal tools. Avoid using the instrument with very hot or highly acidic samples, as this may damage the prism.
  • Product Registration & Warranty: Register the product online. The instrument is warranted for one year against manufacturer defects, excluding the prism and sample stage. Warranty is voided by unauthorized disassembly, liquid immersion, dropping, misuse, improper ambient conditions, or battery leakage from non-included batteries.
  • Performance Parts: ATAGO endeavors to secure performance parts for up to seven years after discontinuation of the instrument.
  • Periodic Inspection and Maintenance: It is recommended to have the refractometer inspected periodically (e.g., every two years) by an ATAGO distributor to ensure dependable and accurate use. This includes inspection, confirmation, replacement of performance parts, and adjustment of span.
  • Malfunction Troubleshooting: If a malfunction is suspected, first check the battery level. Low battery is a common cause of issues; replace it with a new one if necessary.
  • Safety Precautions: Always wear protective gloves, masks, etc., when measuring substances harmful to the human body. Do not attempt to repair, modify, or disassemble the instrument yourself. If dropped or subjected to strong shock, have it inspected by an ATAGO distributor. Do not apply water or sample to any part other than the prism surface.
